My 2nd Religious Fok Art Wall Hanging

This was requested by my daughter, Heather. She wanted the first one I did, but I sold it at the local gallery. So I kept my promise to make her one...any suggestions on the grout color....I'm thinking gray or charcoal or a light charcoal or a paper sack shade of brown.........sorry for the bad photography.....as usual!

What do I think of the actual horse photo? Since the quality of the work cannot be assessed from an online photo, that will not enter into it. Perhaps it does for others but for me it won't. The content of the actual photo is disturbing to me as it is a photo of feral horses who live out their days as wild animals and I cannot romanticize that. Anyone who has owned horses, as I have, will know that horses often require care and intervention for problems. These wild horses do not have that so it's survival of the fittest. Of course this is the same for any wild animals but should not be forgotten. I looked at the photographer's website and saw pics of wild stallions fighting. The results of this are bite or hoof wounds to both animals. Wild mares will foal without assistance and if there are problems there will be suffering and perhaps death for both the mare and the unfortunate foal. These horses are not treated for parasites and while that may not be a large problem in a wild horse population it may cause problems. I know many people do not want to think about such problems as they do not want anything to get in the way of their appreciation of 'art' but I prefer the art on my walls to not depict something I dislike even thinking about as I cannot do anything about it. I have a collection (more than a dozen) of original landscape oil paintings some of which we bought in Europe decades ago and paid less than $1000. for the most expensive. Other paintings I've bought in yard sales for next to nothing. Some of these paintings are amateurish but still have a quality I like. Others are IMO quite well done and likely cost the original purchaser much more than the few dollars I paid. Neither the price nor the artistic 'quality' enters into my appreciation of the art. The fact that someone spent hours or days painting a picture of a scene they enjoyed is more important and I enjoy the fruits of their labor. Art is very personal and I don't think has to cost $12,000. to be valuable. There are many photographers who take pics of horses, if you search and compare prices you will perhaps find something less expensive you will like as much. I like your idea of taking pics of images to spell your last name. That's a very meaningful type of art IMO.

Thank you all very much! You guys do fuel my creativity! This last time I came up w/ the idea to section the wall off using black chalk (my mom supplies the kids w/ copious amounts of chalk in lots of different colors). It made the work sooooo much faster and easier! Deedee - no worries w/ the green chest! The only reason that it is only half finished is because I haven't bought the clear glaze yet to age it. I love how bright it is but I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) when the white showed through. I knew that as as soon as I put a brown glaze on it would not be right so I am mixing a custom glaze in deep green to age it w/. Mtnrdredux - I confess to having an entire Irish Gang and the wearing O' the Kilt is a proudly held tradition by the men. Peony4 - That's funny about hiding the chalk from the kids & your dinner party! I had a terrible time trying to get my kids to stop writing on the walls. Finally I resorted to making them begin scrubbing the walls themselves when I caught them. One day I found DS2 writing on a freshly painted white wall w/ orange marker. I promptly got out the bucket and scrub brush and gave to him. Before I even had a chance to get back to my desk he declared "I'm done!". I grabbed the marker and saw that it was a washable marker. In a fury I grabbed a black industrial sharpie and scribbled on the wall and yelled "Now scrub this!". As soon as I came to my senses we all had a great laugh and it's now a favorite family story to recount "Remember the time mom flipped and wrote all over the walls?!". After that I decided to out think them and did the blackboard wall for them and said 'Have at it!'. I can only imagine what will end up on it during the teenaged yrs. One of the things that I like to do is have the kids draw on it for the Thanksgiving dinner that we host. I love to see what they come up w/. The first year was Pilgrims, Indians, turkeys, spaceships and lasers. Lots of things on fire. It's always quite the conversation starter every year. kswl - I'm telling you - I must have looked like quite a sight running down the street to my van w/ that chandelier in my hands dropping crystals as I went shouting "I'll be right back! I promise!" over my shoulder. I left my kids standing in their yard to let them know I was serious about coming back. I erased my Christmas art yesterday morning to do this. It does tend to hang around for awhile!!!!!

great advice upthread I'll try to be short, probably repeating several people: -get rid of the white console next to the fireplace/look for smth else instead if you need it there for function -think of other window treatments. curtains? woven blinds? roman shades? any of these will look better. move your sectional a bit from the wall, both to allow room for window treatments and because furniture generally needs at least couple inches to breathe..that wil also make room seem larger -you already purchased the ottoman in the same color and style of the sofa..off white, right? well something different would be better, but it's okay..buy a throw, fold it and put there to break your lines a bit. tray is great too-both for function and beauty. you'll appreciate it when watching this TV -I liked reading how your wife gets her art:) okay..so if there's no real room for other suggestions(I'm also prejudiced against mass produced canvas art..maybe she can be talked into a print instead?..)..put that art there first. Make sure it fits-seems huge?.. Say you go for that a very similar art, you have there-a bit of white, black, brown, indigo blue, fiery yellow white and brown you already have in your room (btw like your furniture) pull your other colors (in pillows and throws and accessories) from that art -deep sophisticated blues, golds. can be metallic accessories (like vases or flower pots?), can be softest fur pillows can be velvet, can be knitted throw. everythhing you buy-make sure it's a different texture..leather is sleek you've got enough of it. Speaking from experience-I also have my fair share of leather:) then look for a big ticket items like curtains and a rug. (or simultaneously..just keep your general scheme in mind). you can decide to make them fairly neutral. repeat the color of the furniture, just different material of course. or go for one vivid deep color but make it a shag rag for example. Don't try to match pattern to art..art has a mind of its own. Look at the room as a whole..what does it ask for? and know yourself of course..say I love many rugs but I don't like to clean them lol. You know whether it's high traffic area, what your habits are, and whether you'll be sad for 5 min if the rug will have spots and then get over it, or will be sad for 5 days. when you buy a side table try, again, to introduce another texture, just different material in this case. maybe wood. maybe ceramics(garden stool?some of these look really modern). every new material you bring creates dimension. Dimension is something you look for when creating spaces. Why? well that what we've used to. Ouside always has it. Even when it's a desert or an ocean. It has depth. we need to recreate it with all sort of ways and means that are availiable to us.. Good luck! will be a cool room edited because of thousand typos..))

I just thunk it was a Illynoy thing! I can't imagine ever having your ability to do "The Gypsy Style"!!! My poor Lil Bunny is a Wanna Be! LOL! I think a charcoal grout, but at this point, I'm thinkin' "Let the Sensai teach!!"

Hey Janet didn't get picture in e-mail so I'll answer here,I like the paper sack color idea,because of the large cross color.this is beautiful and in the true Gypsie style.so many thing to look at you have to sit and look awhile.I love it!!!!

Saw this in email last evening and this morning cuz I was too tired from yard work to look at the last ones. I'm so speechless w/this one I don't know how to respond. Think this might be my all-time favorite of your art, girlie. Wish I could do that. On grout, look how it looks un-grouted on the dark background. I'm thinking charcoal. I know I said last night grey, but looking at it again this a.m., the dark background of the substrate makes it appear that it's already grouted, so IMO, that dictates dark grout. I don't even have words to say how much I love this piece.

OMG! This is so totally awesome! I agree with Slo....I think this is a favorite of mine too! I LUV how you have incorporated EVERYTHING into it! What a work of art and the love definately shows through! LUCKY DAUGHTER! I have a ton of questions.....what is the substrate? What did you use for adhesive. How will you hang it? Are your 1/2 marbles cut in half or are they just put in sideways. I too think a charcoal grey would be great for the grout. I LOVE THIS PIECE!

The substrate is a small cabinet door that was given to me....it is approx. 10" wide and 30" long.....I will (should have done it first...but I ain't right)add a wire hanger for the back...I used Weldbond mostly, but stuck the mirror on with the mean mean GEII.......charcoal gray might win out............The marbles at the bottom going around the little cut in 1/2 plate are the flat gems cut in half and stuck up that way......the big red one at the top area is a flat marble gem.......the glass that I used to fill in is iridescent glass.......doesn't really show up, but it's filled in all over the piece........when a light hits it or the sun, it really pops out and dances a jig.....it's got purple and some blues in it...........when it's grouted, I'll try and take a better picture.....hope to grout it today but may have to run to Lowe's...drats.......I normally don't know how a piece will end up until it is finished...and this is the case with this.......I just never know where it's going..........I don't have the "planning ahead skills" in my brain cells.....I just wing it...lots of my embellishments are given to me...even the substrates are free most of the time..I am fortunate to have a lot of good friends...and even word of mouth "unsuspecting friends" that I don't know...but leave stuff at my door..............thanks for the kind comments...

I won't be able to grout until this evening (Tues)...I just got my warrior all cleaned with a jack hammer and rake last night and sealing him this AM.....so tonight I will finish this.....whew...phew...I am very very slow...and my job positively gets in the way of my passion!!! Charcoal grout has won the draw! And, Panthr...if you saw me work on a project...you'd laugh so hard!!!! Come on over!

GISH....not sure why I'm posting this, other than it's finally grouted, sealed and ready to go to my daughter's today..........as in the picture, you can't tell any difference than before it was grouted....I mixed charcoal colorant with white grout...wish it would show up, but IT IS WHAT IT IS!

I am totally struck dumb with awe! This piece is fabulous and so freely done. I don't think I could do something this beautiful. I would try to hard to have it precise. This is one of the finest pieces of art I have seen in a long while. I loved the warrior, but this takes my breath away. Congrats Gypsy. You do great work.

you grouted! The gray grout softens it

Of the two pieces - yours and Heather's - I can't pick a favorite. Both these pieces are just spectacular. Wish I could do that. I love how you'll start w/something, then encircle it w/a row of stuff, then you add another row and on and on. You put a multitude of little things together to make a fabulous whole piece of something I'd like to spend time with. What an artist!
