LOOK My thrift store find today

I decided to run up to the Goodwill this afternoon and I got this set for $5. I think I'd really like to do this one like the black one we've been discussing. The tray on this one is nice and heavy, it is all marked Oneida. It's really black, I'll probably polish mine. The knob on the pot is broken off but I have it. I went up to get a pair of girl's jeans to make a blue jean purse, flying by the seat of my pants again!

Wonderful! That has beautiful lines. I'm sure it will be spectacular when you're finished. Aren't thrift stores the best. I have been looking for something like this but haven't found it. I have found more china flowers to make a shabby chic mirror and at 1/2 price. It's definitely sometimes a cheap thrill of the hunt.

Karen you and I will have to go together!! I'm staying at home today!! It's a good thing vacation is soon over and I have to go back to work. I DON'T WANA GO!!! Luvs, It is metal and kinda rusty. Very heavy. It doesn't have a bottom. I actually bought it as a gift for someone...we won't say who!! It's on it's way to fed ex.. Magpie, the ts's are gettin high here as well and very few things worth having. I think alot of people are selling in yardsales or ebay rather than donate. Although the lady that cuts my hair got a Fritz and Floyd (sp?) Christmas platter for $3!!!! I am really tickled about the garland. It's decorated with some of my vintage ornie's.. all stuff from the stash. Just need one more tree for the other side of the mantel. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Good find! I agree with Lindac on the oven cleaner, plastic bag, set it outside in the sun. Do this over a day or two until you are able to get down to the bare metal which will be a slightly lighter gray color when you remove all the crusties and rust. I strongly advise you not to use vegetable oil. Crisco or other vegetable shortening or lard is better IMHO. Bake long, low and slow - about 325 for an hour or more. Let cool, wipe out any excess grease with a paper towel and repeat the process as many times as needed to seal the pores of the iron. Yes, the pot will become dark black, smooth, and somewhat shiny after the process. Teresa ~ in one of the MANY camps on the care and feeding of old cast iron! Ha!

Lilym, do you mind if I asked what it ran ya? I saw that exact set yesterday at gw but with no tray. Couldn't read the price and didn't want to risk it cause I wasn't supposed to be shopping for mosaics - I was gathering items for DD's medieval costume. Found some goody's too but couldn't resist a few plates.

I still haven't found any plates to start mine. I may have to do it in glass. I love your set.....excited to see this

hazie, do you have antique stores where you live. I have several people that are saving chipped and broken pieces for me, they really can't get anything for them that way usually and the old stuff is the nicest. Ask if they have any broken china, what will kill you is when they tell you they just threw a box out the day before. LOL There is one guy that comes each month to the flea market here, he knows I look for cracked and chipped pieces and he will save them for me. When they find out what you want it for it's like they want to help you re-cycle. It will be awhile before I start on it, I want to start the little drop leaf table next.

I don't have any black china yet, I'm wondering about using black stain glass and broken china on the rest. Even contemplating black/white toile and the black stain glass.

Lilym there was a set of black dishes up on freecycle here. I emailed and asked for them, but haven't heard back. I didn't tell them I wanted to break them!!LOL I doubt they'd understand!!

Great score and that kitty is too funny!ha ha! I want to find a good deal on a set to mosaic but will have to wait for garage sale time to get a good price like that! Jane

I need to keep checking freecycle and craigslist also. Most of the black dishes I've seen were that thick pottery.
