Argue for Consensus or Just Do It?

18 years ago

Another post reminded me of a sermon I heard maybe 25 or so years ago.

can't remember her name, but the pastor was a young black Episcopal...priest? pastor?

She was brilliant.

brilliant writer, charismatic speaker, just inspiring.

tiny little thing, gripped the edges of the pulpit & bounced on the balls of her feet when she spoke.

Something she said has remained with me all these years:

She was the only woman in many of her classes in seminary, & one of the worrisome issues in many mainline denominations in those days was whether congregations would accept women as ministers.

Then, instead of continuing the debate, somebody had the bright idea of checking.

They polled church-going people & got some negative feedback;

a significant number of people even went so far as to say that they'd change their church if a woman appeared in the pulpit.

so they checked with churches that had *not* asked their members if they'd accept a woman minister but had simply hired a woman minister.

no revolution.

no loss of members.

hardly a ripple.

It was easier for people to accept the *reality* of change when they saw it than it was to accept the *idea* of change when they were asked.

I think we women sometimes are so anxious that everybody agree that we ask for consensus on things that really don't warrant the request.

We ask permission where we could get more done with less trouble if we'd just do whatever it is.

sumpn to think about.
