Say Goodbye to Another Old Kitchen!!

Well....the day has come...Mixed emotions...Filled with apprehension and excitement.

They are presently setting up our temporary kitchen by pulling out old kitchen sink and cabinets and moving them into our dining room, as well as moving our fridge and stove in there. We will be living in the living room and dining room for the next SEVERAL months.

The first story of our house was built in 1918 and has very "good bones". Here are some pictures of my old kitchen and family room which has served us (family of 5) well since moving in 13 years ago. The first I have always loved all the white cabinets and counters which is why we are going with all white again, but different materials of course!!

The adventure has begun...hold on! I get the sadness of saying goodbye to a space that has lots of memories. Looking forward to all the firsts ahead.

I'm with Kevin, above. Stone slab countertops aren't going away, if for no other reason than that they can be more economical than laminate or tile. A good tile-setter here in LA will charge $125/linear foot or more for installation. If you shop right, you can find prefab 8' long granite countertops for as little as $150, with installation and minor fabrication for a few hundred dollars more. It won't be the finest workmanship at that price, but still, you can get a basic 8' countertop with 4" backplash for $600 or less, installed, while the tile-setter's labor alone will be twice that, without adding in the cost of tile, mortar, grout or hardibacker. Unless you're buying prefab laminate counters at the big box store, toting them home yourself, and doing your own templating, cutting, and installation, you'll be hard put to match the price of those prefab stone counters. Special-order laminate costs about twice as much as prefab stone. So much for "In depth" reporting at CNN.

Oh Katieob, One door closes another door opens. I believe your next kitchen is going to be more stunning. Right now it is hard to imagine but it will happen. With your taste, talent, vision and creativity, your next kitchen will be a dream come true. I have been in a similar situation. Not the kitchen but the home. I left a fantastic neighborhood, a dream home, and great schools because of my DH's promotion. It was a hard to say good-bye. And I missed all the little details of my old place. I missed my friends, my garden, my cute little office, my fireplace in the master bed room, tiled patio, pool, living just 20 miles from DC... But, DH and I made the right choice for our family. We moved into a new adventure that got our minds excited. This new place you move to will give you a challenge and ignite your brain. You will make the next kitchen as magnificent (probably more so) then the one you are saying good-bye too. And you are doing this for your family. I think what helped me the most was reminding myself that my family came first. My family and what makes us work as a family was priority. You are doing this for your husband and your children. This will get you through the rough patch. And your sweet new baby will get to part of the transformation of a new place into a stunning kitchen. You can do this. Wow, NHB - that is one gorgeous view. We've seen our share of houses perched on mountain sides and that's not for us. I love the more rolling land with the distance views of the mountains. It's not all about the land, of course, it's also lifestyle, and we love the slightly off kilter, hippy aspect aspects of Asheville along with the great dining, outdoor activities, entertainment options, the variety of festivals in the area etc. Last year we went down there with friends for LoxFest which was a hoot! bgj your trips to Knoxville sound like ours to Asheville, looking for the area that fits and is far enough away for peace but still allows us to get there and enjoy the aspects we love. I do want to go to Oak Ridge, though, just to see it! I would prefer to find an existing home and remodel it like we did this one but we haven't seen anything worth putting the time and $$ into. Biggest issue for DH is he won't accept a block basement, it has to be poured so I imagine we'll build. that's another thing to freak out about. We want a smallish house on acreage and if the land is there the house is 3500 sq ft and up - way more than I want to deal with. ellendi I hear you on the need for medical care. Privacy vs isolation is the tricky part but DH and I are partners and neither one of us is going to play the martyr for the other. We'll find a balance or we'll move on. Bottom line is, when I'm happy, he's happy ;-) bpathome we're really neighbors, you know? Several friends live on the main drag east of town. You probably knew/know one or two. And do not get me started on the library! That is honestly one of the hardest things for me to leave - we have the BEST library. shee that fixture is from Sea Gull Lighting but it's old and certainly not current stock. I spray painted it with Rustoleum ORB paint years ago when the look of brass was totally passé.

Yeah. But it was very cramped!!

caminnc---we are going with whited beaded inset cabinets and caesarstone organic white countertops on island and caesarstone shitake countertop on permeter.

It will still be a very white kitchen. :)

Goodbye old kitchen! Can't wait to see the new one!! It sounds like you'll have a better functioning temp kitchen than most. To have a working sink and range would be a dream come true for a reno. Best of luck--with everything!!

Your old kitchen definitely has heart and personality. It's funny, sometimes I look back at my old electric cooktop (which I thought was so bad) and remember the many, many, marvelous meals which came from it. So many years, so many memories. I love your pictures, memories from the past - good luck with the new, am looking forward to watching your progress! Best, oldbat2be

I'd take them, if you're anywhere within driving distance!

BTW. "SEVERAL" is not a long time in a kitchen reno. Get used to the idea. :)

Just gotta ask.
For people such as I, please consider donating those beautiful cabinets? You might be done with them and not able to stand the sight of them, but there's a lot I could do with them.

People can usually use the tax right off, too, right?

Annsch, Can you please post some pics of how your project is coming along? I am considering Shitake for my counters (I am doing white shake cabinets) and would love to see it in a finished kitchen.

I only have a little 4x4 sample, although I have seen the 12x12 samples too. Talking with a guy at the granite yard, he said he thought it had a pink hue to it and said I would think it looked dirty (I guess due to the limestone-type fossilization) and suggested I visit the Caesarstone store to see a full slab.

Just wondering what your thoughts are. Also, what color paint are you doing on your cabinets and what will you be using for backsplash?

I love your old kitchen so I'm sure the new one will be spectacular. Wait til you see my "before" shots.... everything brown and brick colored. AWFUL... so that white clean kitchen look is very appealing.

I like your old kitchen too; I can see why you are sad to see it go. But that is a great space and I bet your new one will be awesome. BTW, I have that same sink in my "old" kitchen.
