magic eraser for GE II

Ok I know one of you awhile ago (Rosemarythyme maybe??) was swearing by the magic eraser sponge to remove the GE II from our frying pan??

Did you get it wet first? Did you use it after you grouted? I've gotta tell ya...I can't seem to get the thing to work worth a darn on my bowl.

I'm a little frustrated at my bowl right now..the edges on the bowl didn't turn out very good and I will have to re-grout that section. The grout haze is being stubborn and doens't want to come off and the thing seems to weigh about 10 pounds!!!! Plus I have some GE II that I didn't get off the pieces and it doesn't seem to want to come off at ALL now that its done!!

Chickee,I think it was Toomuch not sure either but I ran right out to buy them for my bowl also..didn't work for me.I grouted my bowl with sanded grout and that took off some then I sat for hrs. with craft sticks and fingernails and scraped off all the glue.I switched to a glass glue from stained glass shop like weldbond ,I did not like the GE glue it was too messy for me.Anyway my bowl weighs 10 or 11 lbs also but I really like it,hope it goes to someone who can find a place for it.Good luck Annie

I can report that the magic eraser isn't working for me today. Or the non-acetone fingernail polish remover. Or the glass top range cleaner.

I went to the GE II website and found this:

For ceramic tile, marble, Formica>Ã>, fiberglass, etc., use 100% mineral spirits (turpentine) and a non-abrasive scouring pad. Test solvent on a hidden area of the surface to ensure that discoloration will not occur. If discoloration does occur, contact the manufacturer of the surface for further assistance.
For glass surfaces, use a razor blade to remove as much as possible, then apply mineral spirits. Remove excess as much as possible, then apply mineral spirits. Remove excess with a towel or other suitable cleaning utensil that will not mar the surface (such as a non-abrasive pad).

NOTE: For surfaces such as hard plastics or painted surfaces, including cars, use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

Greetings! I've been browsing the net for tips on just this subject and your thread has answered a lot of questions - thank you! I just have one more inquiry - do you know of a way to make the end product of one-part self curing silicones (after curing) softer and stretchier (lets say more like human skin, goal hardness is 10-30 shore A)? The reason I'm asking: I am a resident in heart surgery and I'm trying to make practice models of parts of the human heart and tissue to use for training outside the operating room. As you said the platinum cure silicones are used for this purpose but the price difference is tenfold and they're a bit too expensive for us.

How do I always end up here? I was googling something (not Mr Clean) and one of the results was this thread. Interesting how often these forums show up. Nice to see other people who know about MSDS's. Eucalyptus oil is fantastic. It did leave a pale patch on a timber laminated shelf which DH attacked with a little too much vigour. But on other occasions, for example when he's used it to remove paint spatters on timber, it's been fine. Didn't know about pets. Thanks for the warning. Just wondering if eucy oil is the main active ingredient in OdoBan. Years ago when citrus oil was the big new environmentally friendly thing I tried to buy a cleaner and found most in the supermarkets had the usual ingredients anyway with just a token bit of the citrus oil added. For coffee and tea stains in cups I read about bicarb years ago. Back to what I was doing.

I know exactly how you feel. We have a Viking gas rangetop with a black porcelain top. Like you, I wasn't cleaning it after every use. And then, when I went away for a week, DH stayed home and grilled every night on the rangetop. I came home to a huge cooked-on mess. I followed Viking's instructions and found that regular Dawn took off most of the grease spots but left behind white cloudy blooms in the porcelain. I thought for sure that I had ruined the range. I finally found Soft Scrub without bleach and used that with a microfibre cloth with great success. The black parts look fabulous again. If you don't find anything that cleans it, please don't beat yourself up about it. Your stove is meant to be used and enjoyed. Unfortunately, once used, these appliances will almost never look like new. Good luck!

Thank you for the kind words, everyone. Senator, I love quarter-sawn oak. I look forward to seeing your finished kitchen. I considered QS oak for our cabinets, but didn't want to overdo the A&C style too much in our home, since it's not a period home. We do have a few pieces of QS oak furniture, and I absolutely love the grain in the wood. I'm sure you're kitchen will be a showstopper and I look forward to seeing it. We weren't sure about the idea of a corner sink at first. We were careful to order a large enough cabinet to allow for placement of the sink as close to the front edge of the counter as possible. The larger cabinet cost us a few inches of storage on either side and created a larger triangular area behind the sink than we would have needed. We were concerned about the possibility of developing back strain from reaching too far into the sink. As it turned out, the corner sink is comfortable to work at, and the placement makes it much more of an interesting place to work, as well. The spot behind the sink is turning out to be a great place to slide the coffee maker when it's perking away and not need to worry about steam hitting the upper cabinets. I remember reading a thread about that issue recently. Motherof3sons, here is the magic corner in several positions. I ended up storing some things that I don't frequently use in that space. Consequently, I haven't given it heavy usage yet, but it seems to operate very smoothly and is sturdy.

It wasn't me .... I use razor blades. If the silicone creeps up between the tiles - after it's dry - I cut it with the razor blade and use a tweezers or needlenose pliers to yank it out.

I had wondered about that part..and have several x-acto knives around..well, not that easy to reach, around!
(grandkids aplenty here)

I think the family has resigned themselves, to the fact they may never sit on a couch again..I TRY..and try and try to keep things cleared..but mosaic stuff just multiplies!

at least I got it all out of the kitchen..they have the table back!...guess there's a limit to how many 'picnics' kids will have fun with!

That would have been I that recommended the Magic Eraser! It seemed to work well for me at the time but I have moved on to another cleanser. It's a DYNA WIPE from QVC. I don't know what's in it but it's working better. In desperation, I also use the wipes you use on spectacles and rubbing alcohol. For hunks of silicone, I use a knife and tweezers. BTW, I bought a syringe the other day and it was BRILLIANT to use. BUT the second time I attempted it, I could not get the plunger to go down. It was like there was a layer of trapped air between the silicone and plunger! (The opening was NOT clogged.)

Hi all. This is only my second time to post, but I'm a long time lurker. I'm just starting to mosaic so I read EVERYTHING on this forum to learn what to do (or NOT do). LOL
I ran across this old thread that suggests using WD 40 to remove silicone on tiles. Thought it might be helpful.

Thanks for that LINDEE: Gonna look for that PP stuff next time I'm at Lowes. Glad you came out of lurkdom, and happy to read that you're starting to mosaic. Can't wait to see your first project.

The guys that installed my bathroom granite used silicone
They made quite a little mess on the wall tile when the sill broke...anyway,
they cleaned it off with denatured alcohol.
