Vinegar for roses?
Comments (25)I attended an organic gardening talk and the speaker mentioned a natural process, think he called it vaporization, wherein a chemical applied during heat converts to vapor and can kill leaves without the chemical ever touching the bush. Specifically, he was talking about vinegar mixes. IMHO, desert rose gardeners should exercise extreme caution using anything stronger than water during summer months. Let the stupid bermuda grass grow if you can't pull it by hand during the cool mornings. When other people on this forum are complaining about snow and freezing temps, we'll be outside enjoying our gardens and the bermuda will be dormant. Weeds are a year-round nuisance but a hoe and a shovel go a long way towards keeping them under control. Adding soil sulfur once a year should be sufficient in our region as it breaks down soooo slowly and most rose feeds have some form of sulfur in them. I prefer Dispersul which breaks down much faster than the yellow pellets....See Morecleaning tar off of vinyl floor
Comments (11)The easiest, safest and most damage free way to clean tar off your vinyl floor is with Lestoil. A small amount on a sponge or rag and ALL the tar will be removed with just a little rubbing and absolutely no damage to your floor. I've been in the roofing business since 1975 and have used Lestoil for over 40 years and it works incredibly well. It will even take tar off your clothes. Take it from someone who works with tar everyday, it works great....See MorePared-down, non-toxic cleaning - share your tips!
Comments (41)Thanks caseby- your results are somewhat reassuring. I've recently started purchasing the Clorox wipes and use them in my weekly "house blessing". I quickly wipe all knobs (including outside door knobs) and phones and I also use one to wipe my chopping blocks (which are wood - another story but I DO wash them in dishwater throughout the week as well.) Something about sponges which I read here eons ago is that they can be disinfected by putting them in the microwave for 2 minutes (of course not if they have metallic parts). I've been doing this daily when I fix my coffee in the morning. Makes me feel virtuous. I just checked google and found a whole bunch of hits recommending that sponges be microwaved anywhere from 30 seconds to 60 seconds. So I guess I will continue. (Now I don't know exactly when to toss the sponges, always more questions, LOL). Anyway, I think the microwave cleansing should be considered a non-toxic cleaning method (if you don't have a leaky microwave which could be toxic in other ways - check google for ways to test your microwave or just buy the cheap end of microwave ovens and replace every 5 years or so, that's what I plan to do. My last one I had for 25 years and was horrified to read here about someone who had actually had their leakage measured - it pentrates walls - yikes! always something to worry about, maybe I'm one of those obsessive compulsive wannabes's, LOL) --Alice...See MoreAnother Magic Eraser Testimonial.........
Comments (12)Yeah, I should have posted the Snopes article link also in my first post. The site has posted the generated response that P&G sends out to the consumers who inquire about the saftey of the product. It does not address the issue of outgassing. They sort of walk around the whole issue. That makes me very suspicious. They keep emphasizing that the product does not *contain* formaldehyde but do not say anything to assure the consumer that the products does not *degrade* into it's componants or into something entirely different. I'm sure everyone can remember from chemistry class how the addition of something simple like *water* to a simple compound can create something, or maybe two or three things, that are entirely different. Formaldehyde itself is produced by a catalytic oxidation. Even the addition of *heat* to a compound can change it - even heat from friction. So can sunlight...... If I leave my Magic Sponge on the window sill above the sink, is the sunlight going to cause it to release gases. There is not a lot of info out there on formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer so I absolutly do not know anything _for sure_ about it. BUT, I do not trust the Big Corporations "announcments" about the saftey of their products. We have all been fooled in the past. Being an 'oldster' I remember how back in the 50's - 60's we were being told that cigarette smoking was COMPLETELY HARMLESS. Cigarette companies even got medical doctors to appear in their commercials to endose their product and dispell the "myth" about the damgers of cigarette smoking. One company even developed 'harmless' *asbestos* cigarette filters. I just am not going to take P&G's "word for it" about a product that is making them tens of MILLIONS of dollars per year. I want to see Snopes publish something from another source other than that of the maufacturer of the product....See Morekygirl99
