Questions regarding hardwood floors

I would love to have hardwood flooring in the bedroom but my husband wants carpet. He wants carpet underfoot when he gets out of bed. The man who has been helping me with the flooring said that most people place a large area rug under the bed which solves the problem. I feel that defeats a portion of the reason I want hardwood which is to not have carpet under the bed. I have a large oriental rug that I want to use in the room but I don't want it under the bed. Do you have any suggestions?

Get your husband a nice fuzzy pair of slippers to keep by the bed.

(I caved and let my husband put carpet instead of wood in our bedroom and I wish now that I hadn't.)

Radiant heat under the hardwood? A costly but luxurious fix.

In an old house I had two narrow runners on each side of the bed.

There really are no rules about what colors go together, just personal preference. Some people do suggest going one or two shades apart for contrast. Have you scrolled through the Finished Kitchens Blog? You can get lots of good ideas from there. I'll link it below. We have just been clipping photos out and going to open houses to see what appeals to us. We ended up with Brazilian Teak Floors and Alder Cabinets with a medium brown stain. (both are unfinished so no photos to show you yet) I think the colors you chose sound good together but without seeing the Whiskey Glaze, I'm not sure. Do you have samples of each that you are holding up next to each other? As for the upkeep, I've had tile, travertine and wood before. All have their pros and cons but the upkeep on the wood was not a big deal at all. I used my built in vac for quick dusting and damp mopped once a week. We had plenty of spills but never any damage. I have site finished hardwood now and I do find it scratches a bit too easily... But I also think that it wasn't done well so that is probably half the problem. We are considering all the options at the moment, as we would like to install hardwood throughout our main floor, other than the bathrooms and mudroom! All in all, 3000 sq ft plus stairs. Our budget is more in line with inexpensive pocket, so this is an upgrade and we want to macke the most economical choice! There are some Bella wood options from lumber liquidators that we like, and a bamboo option, though I worry that may be too trendy!

Our open living/dining area measures 18' x 30' with a central foyer located on the long wall also, so it is similar in area as yours. The only difference is that all our windows are on the long wall opposite the foyer. The plank width on our pre-finished engineered wood flooring is 3", because we wanted the more traditional look of this width. To make the room appear larger, and for best support because of the layout of our home's floor joists, our planks were laid length-wise along the longer dimensions. To me, the herringbone pattern has always seemed very old-fashioned, yet this may just be my own personal reaction because we had herringbone patterned floors in the military housing we lived in back in the 70's, and those homes were already 20 years old back then! One thing you should consider with herringbone is the cost factor, since I believe it would be much more expensive because so much more material is needed. If you were to have a herringbone pattern, I would suggest that it be laid with the angled pattern directed at the shorter wall dimensions, otherwise I think it would make the room appear much smaller. For some rooms with herringbone floor designs, go to google and type in herringbone wood flooring into your browser, then click on "images", and it will show you lots of photos so you can get an idea of how the pattern looks.

First and foremost, great idea with the wooden accent wall! They are on trend right now and it's a great addition to any room. With the being said, I do not think you will have a problem with the contrasting of each material so long as the colors of each jive. Textures, materials, and colors are always mixed with each other to give a room its own unique look and style. Also, gray is a universal color and you shouldn't have a hard time finding a floor that compliments the accent wall. The Flooring Blog

Like beagles, we have wood floors in the bedroom, but I have two antique Persian style runner rugs on either side of the bed. I like a lot of the wood floor to show, so I tend to use smaller rugs in strategic places.

Yeah, me too. I don't know why I caved on this one (money?) .... It's a bit funny that husbands think carpet is so wonderful :p

Rugs don't have to go under the bed. I have two large rugs in my BR, one in a small sitting area off-center of the foot of the bed, and another in an area leading to the bathroom. That's in addition to carpet under the rugs.
DH has food problems and can't easily walk barefoot on hardwood so we will always have carpet in the BR.

For a lot of people, age, the chance of falling, and physical restrictions play a major role in the decision to put carpet in the BR.

I also have a vintage runner on the floor at one side of the bed (since I'm the only one sleeping in my bed anyhow) and a 9 X 7 piece of vintage carpet on the floor at the foot of the bed. My wood floors are old. Usually I take up the bigger rug in the summer, but the runner is there all the time. I like to put my feet on it when I crawl out of bed, plus the way the bed is situated, you can't really see most of it when you walk into the room.

Mine loves carpet, but that may change when I have the old carpet ripped out of the bedrooms and put in some jazzy new carpet that costs the earth.

Yes, the expense of putting wood in all the bedrooms and office was just a bit too much. We put in Anderson's hand scraped wood and it was expensive, but the living, dining and kitchen rooms look terrific.

If there are no physical restrictions or limitations, I would get him The Small Area Rug of His Choice, which would satisfy him and not interfere with my Oriental :) Just my $.02.
