mixing dark wood with very light wood -- what do you think?

I like the contrast between very dark wood and very light wood...I'm thinking of a sofa with dark legs and then thinking of armchairs in a almost painted wood (see attached in 'Linen')...what do you think?

Generally I have a very hard time making decor decisions, but this is one I feel very strongly about. I LOVE mixing different woods. In my kitchen which opens to my family room- I have light oak cabinets, painted white frame on a cherry top table, cherry wall unit and old pine antique sideboard. I absolutely love it.

Posting pictures is always advised when asking questions like this because it's hard to offer opinions without seeing the actual room, the window and/or the color of your griege drapes. That said, I think between the doors and floors you already have enough wood going on so I'd go with white blinds over the stained wood. I tend to lean towards the white anyways because I think they make a room look brighter or more uplifting. I love wood in general but too much can darken or even over power a room. I'm sure if you post a picture you'll get advise about your drapes and window.

Yes! Do it! I'm just screaming that at you since I *just* got off the phone getting a quote for a walnut block island top for my own kitchen. And, as strange as this is - I swear I happened onto your blog last week or the week before. I have no idea how I happened onto it, but the name is totally familiar. My quote was for a hard surface finish (no food prep or cutting and no maintenance required) which the person likened to a kitchen table. Wipe it up and go. I'm just hoping I can budget it in. Lovely!

aries61 - have you ordered your cabinets yet, or are you still in the planning stages? akchicago's point was very good and you may want to start another thread to solicit input into the size of your sump/capture area. Here's what we did for our wood hood with Conestoga panels. DH built a plywood box and secured it to the joists (I forget how). The cutouts are simply to reduce weight. Here you can see the stainless steel surround we added to the inside: This shot shows the sides of the hood. I'm including this as an example of a 'custom' wood hood and would welcome feedback on what's 'wrong' with ours. (I continue to think something is off with the design but LOVE the functionality - large capture area).

Taking wood floor dark to light - dark stain remains in grain/joints?

Sooo new issue - staining the bannister/baluster to match. Painter is here (flooring guys don't/wont do it) and even though he waterpopped the wood, the stain is going on much grayer than the color of the floor. I don't know if it's the amount of water he used (too little), the application technique (damp rag), the lack of drying time (a few minutes!) or what but the waterpopped sample looks indistinguishable from the unwaterpopped - both look grayish. Wondering if I need to bring someone else in to help or if we should try a different stain color blend like weathered oak and bona natural, 1:1. Any thoughts? Also, I'm not thrilled with the sanding job on the baluster - there are quite a few areas where they didn't get the dark stain up, and it's especially bad around the bottom of the newel post. I don't know if this is something I should accept or whether this is subpar work. Would love thoughts from the pros!! Thank you thank you!

I agree - mixing woods gives a wonderful 'collected over time' look. I love mixing woods & it's one of the things (& there's not always a lot I love) that I love about a fair amount of furniture that I have. Right now every time I pass my boys Maple headboards propped against our cherry buffet, I think what a wonderful contrast it is. Mixed woods just look 'rich' & give such depth to a room.

That said, I think that chair is wonderful & will look fabulous w/ the look that you are trying to achieve!

I think that the style of the legs is much more important than the color. I, too, like mixing woods.
