Beginner in dire need of Bonsai help
Comments (6)I went to Walmart (It's the only "big" store around me within 2 hours) and got an insecticide that kills bugs like Thrips (which might also be what Clyde has) and also got a type of clay soil to move them in to since they are pretty much only in dirt. I also got some rubbing alcohol in case the insecticide doesn't work. I read online that spraying a mix of water, soap and rubbing alcohol can get rid of mealy bugs. Do you think this will work? Also, while switching the Bonsais I took a look at their roots and they were pretty healthy looking I think. (They looked white/yellowish rather than brown.) Underneath their bark it's also still very green, so I have some hope now that they'll get better soon! The picture attached is of Clyde. He doesn't look like this anymore since I changed his soil. Hopefully by switching soil and using the insecticide it will get rid of the bugs. At the moment, I haven't seen any. Also, do you think that he should be placed in a different type of pot? The one he is in now is basically just like a bowl or cup....See MoreBowling Balls for DUMMIES??
Comments (18)I was going to give you the instructions I've been collecting, but see you got a teriific link that tells you nearly everything. Did it say to get 6 and a half bags of half marbles to do a regular sized bowling ball? Also I thought this person I'm quoting below had good information on preparation: "I paint mine with Fusion paint for plastics, or I use a plastic primer first and then a spray paint of my choice. I let the ball cure for 2 weeks per the can instructions, then I spray 3-4 layers of an outdoor clear poly on it and let that cure for another day or two, then it can go outside. I also spray it with clear poly every spring and bring them inside for the winter as they could crack depending on what the ball was made of. Make sure you get the waxy coating off the ball first by washing it with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution or rubbing alcohol." Hope some of this helps! We're anxious to see what you do! Comments (13)Found another ball on the way home. I ducked into a ts I don't often make it to and they had one! I was a good girl too. I grabbed the bowling ball and perused the beautiful but too pricey glassware and left. Gotta get home to feed the little people. Kids expect regular meals. So just need one more ball... Jane I'll post pics as soon as it's complete. Don't give up on me a move a tad bit slower than you do. You were a speed demon on that wonderful castle....See MoreBeginner needs help with knit fabric & interfacing
Comments (11)Thanks for all of the help so far. To Patti's questions... Yes, I prewashed. After reading up on various types of knit fabrics, I believe mine is in the "interlock" category. It fits the description on the page linked below. The needle is a "universal" type, recommended by the nice lady at the fabric store. When you start talking about the "self-bias method," you're already over my head. That said, I think I probably used the wrong sort of interfacing. The lady at the store suggested one type, but I disregarded her advice because the stuff she suggested was not fusible, and the pattern instructions specified a fusible type. I think I probably bought a stiffer interfacing than was appropriate. Here is a link that might be useful: Knit Fabrics: Types and how to sew them...See Morefoxglove44
