Wooden Stairs dilemma

The people on this forum are so much better at decorating then I am so I have come back for more help. We are finally getting serious with replacing the carpet that goes up our staircase as well as the upstairs carpeting. We are considering replacing the carpet on the stairs with wooden treads. Now here is my concern: we have light oak (house build in the 90's) through out the house. The bannister and the spindles are light oak as is the floor trim and the closet door that is centered at the top of the stairs. I would really like to put a darker tread down but I am not sure how this would look. Downstairs, the foyer is ceramic tile and the two closest rooms have Tiger Eye wood (similar to Brazilian Cherry). If I put in red oak or something with a more character... I guess I just don't know what would work. I just think light oak would be overkill as we have so much of it in this house. Any suggestions??
