I will be watching this thread. We are doing the same thing and DH stained the wood but I think it's too dark. We have the typical light reddish oak floors and the wood he stained for the steps is a dark brown oak. I mentioned sanding it and restaining but of course, DH is not thrilled with that and likes the steps the way they are.

Can you paint your spindles white (or another color) and darken the railing? And, paint the risers white, too. That way the treads will make sense. Many times the treads are oak and the flooring is some other species.
In general, mixing woods and stains is OK. If you posted a pic., that may be more helpful.

I would either match the oak or the Tiger Eye. Rather than consistency being overkill, you will start to introduce too many elements if you go with yet another finish.

Since your trim is also light oak, I agree with Palimpsest. It might have worked to darken the railing to match the new treads if you trim was either white to match the spindles or dark to match the railing/treads. But as it is, I think it would be too much of a "mish-mash" of elements if you try to introduce another dark wood.

That is what it sounds like from what you wrote. Have to say that would be easier said than done. We have one tread that was broken on the stairs to our basement (didn't know it until we replaced carpeting). I recently asked our go-to-for-renovation-projects guy about taking up the carpet and replacing that one tread. Apparently stairs are built with a part that goes into the wall, so you can't just pull up the tread without getting inside the wall (at least that is the case in our 1960 house). Your house looks fairly new and the wood looks to be in excellent shape. I wouldn't change it other than to paint the risers and spindles as Paintergirl, Palimsest and Hoosiergirl suggested.

It appears to me it is one of those configurations where the finished tread is only on the edge and the carpet is inset over an area that has no finished tread.

Palimpsest is correct. There is probably just plywood under the carpeting. Sigh, I guess we will probably put in new carpet and maybe in the future house (whenever that is) we will do something different with the stairs. I think white paint would look odd in the middle of the house but thanks for the help.
