Stair tread dilemma?

Custom wood stairs going in new build-stained wood treads-no carpet. Builder is recommending they plug screw 6 separate 1/2" holes in each tread top to keep the stairs from squeaking. Or they can pocket screw from under so you see no screws or plugs. They recommend the plug screws because they said this would keep the treads the most secure and lessen the chance of squeaking-mainly the squeaking. I think they are recommending it because otherwise they would have to tear down the drywall to get to the stringers to pocket screw from behind-which would be on their dime. I'd rather not have 6 plugs screws on the tread. Is their any validity to their claim the plug screwing from the top would be best? I'm not sure what the norm is.
