What are the Design Rules with Wood?

How many wood colors, species can there be in a room? I currently have red oak floors, honey oak cabinets through the 1st floor and all of the trim in the house is a honey color oak or pine. When the house was built in 1994 all was made to match.

Now it is 2009 and the kitchen remodel is being planned. Proposed is keeping the red oak floors (refinishing to a lighter color), Cherry cognac cabinets, and the trim has no plans to change. Everywhere people say this will look fabulous and that cabinets are more of a furniture item and should not have to match all. A nagging part of me is saying aren't these too many woods & colors in an open plan house? Do I paint the trim white and offend my husband's love of unpainted wood? Then do the inside doors need to be painted white (and show every mark) Where does it end?

What are the design rules for wood in a house? Are there any?
