Baby Barn has arrived.

Our long awaited barn has finally arrived.

I'm so tempted to decorate it as a cute little cottage but DH has first dibs. Carts and dirty plows and mowers etc. Still curtains may magically appear some night.

I've posted the pic link in Cottage Gardens "gallery" if anyone would like a peek. I think it would make a cute "Bed and Get Your Own Breakfast".

LOL! Sign me up! And can you throw in some Tribe tickets, preferably when my Angels are in town beating up on your boys - AGAIN. : )

I posted on the cottage but just wanted to say once more how great it looks and I am a sagey green with envy. I'd have my garden stuff in there, asap. Stake a claim to at least a corner for a potting bench. Tell him he can use it, too. ; )

you are using good potting mix, not the cheap junky stuff so I think there should be some goodies in there to get them going at first. I like to add just a little pumice in the soil I buy. I don't know why but they seem to like it. A grower at the farmers market in Orange grows his plants on pumice + peat moss + a wee bit of sand. He says it lasts longer in the pot and keeps the roots healthy because the materials break down slower so more oxygen is available to the roots. I had super results with gardenias and strawberries on this mixture. So now I put about 1/4 of it and 3/4 a high quality mix in 1 gal. pots for bands. He also says redwood compost will do the same as peat for keeping oxygen rich conditions longer. The other thing I learned is that the commercial nsys use a mix that is only designed to last 6-8 months. Long enough to push the plants to bloom and be sold. After that, the mix degrades to muck and kills off the roots. He suggests that this is the reason that so many planted 1 and 5 gallon plants fail to establish or do poorly when you plant them in the landscape. He suggests removing the mix for plants that go dormant and planting them bareroot for the best results. We talked almost an hour about this topic. His dad was a farmer and nurseryman for the majority of the last century. He said that nurseries used to sell in native soils or dig up plants to sell in burlap or in bare root in fall and winter. He said he has grown plants in 90% sand with constant irrigation and feeding and because the soil has excellent oxygen capacity, the plants thrive. Redwood compost is also slow to degrade but because of it's expense, it stopped being used for commercial potting on a large scale. Sorry to go on so long but I wanted to share so you could try for yourself if you want to. With the bagged mix + the 1/4 peat/pumice/sand formula, I get good results and the plants are ready to get out of the 1 gal pots before the soil wears out. The roots grow pretty fast and I don't worry about overwatering because the mix has plenty of oxygen and stays fluffy.

DON B -- Oh, you mean digging up the raw turf by back-breaking hand, schlepping about 600 lbs. of topsoil in 30 lb. bags for my garden and the Neighbor's Plot, having to impress upon the 20s-something son of the Chinese Upstairs Next Door Neighbor why it's not cool to litter the sidewalk and porch with cigarette butts (maybe gathering them and putting them on his porch gave him a hint?), having to endure kitschy plastic pinwheels and 99 cent store wooden signs ("Garden!", "Spring!") put into new Neighbor's Plot garden, having a beautiful white limestone rock STOLEN from hosta tree garden, having nearly every passer-by praising the gardens, having the "landscape workers" trample fencing, plants and I.D. tags, having to cover the "dangerous" sharp edge of the Adirondack fencing with split foam tubing, having to replace the "dangerous" wrought-iron trellis for my clematis with swim noodles mounted on bamboo stakes, having my hosta garden plowed under by a vicious co-op manager for no reason, having to bump out an extension, apply topsoil and all the other goodies, plant, and water a new place for my hosta by cover of night----you mean THAT blog?? Don't have time for that blog--too busy living it!

Oakley - Thanks! Goodness, that darn carpet makes it very limiting to decorate. I long for hardwood throughout the house. Wanted to mention I do have other sheets with the same colors in smaller prints. I actually prefer a smaller scale paired with the plaid, but oh well I'm using the submarine sheets too! DS1 is handling the change pretty well overall. We tried to include him as much as possible with getting ready for the baby. He picked out books and a few other things and helped with the nursery. Mitch - Aw, thanks! Funky - Thank you! I bought the large G off etsy. The other art was reused from DS1's nursery and I bought different frames and mats.

Georgeanne..your great barn got me to play and search for pics of old garden structures. I'm still in inside chaos trying to finish things and trying to maintain focus, but love my garden/outdoors so it is difficult not to go there.

My shed is still in the process of being finished, it has log sheathes for the outside, these are the strips with bark from cutting logs into lumber. In hindsight (as much as I love the look) I just reroofed my home and now have a monster pile of wood shingles which could have been used for siding the shed. Next idea is to use these for siding a half shed (self standing porch) where I can sit in the shade among the trees and kick back.

I like rustic and have a long way to go getting the backyard in shape. Have always wanted to build an arbor with branches, fell upon a website out of Canada named HomeEnvy.

This may be in the wrong thread or forum. But it has a lot of interesting diy and many fit well in working within our small house environment. The URL is instructions for building an arbor.

Thanks for looking at our new arrival...it smells good too.

Out of the blue DH said "where do you want your potting bench." Hmmmm, I said, what a good idea. Then he suggested one on wheels so I could wheel it out onto the porch.

Diana---shirtless wonders are on the way...and what can I say about my Tribe??? Grady can't do it all.

Sandy---I'm lovin' that HomeEnvy site. Found the perfect bench for the porch there and the rustic arbor is cool. Someone from Cottage Gardens has a great one.

What a saweet little barn....I love it! It'll look darling with some cute window treatments....lol.

Diana (Angelcub)....pardon my being so nosey, but where are you located? I looked at your garden pictures last night....what a beautiful job you've done....and you mention being on the north slopes of the San Gabriels. My husband's family business is in Altadena, and we used to live there, too.....are you nearby, or are you over Angeles Crest?

Hi Lori, No, I am not near Altadena but I'm familiar with the area since I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley (Baldwin Park/West Covina). Hubby is from Whittier and we lived in Glendora for quite a few years. I had both my sons at Methodist Hospital in Arcadia. Small world, eh? : )

We are just a bit north of the mountain community of Wrightwood. We are south of hwy 138 which runs east/west - east to the San Bernardino Mtns. and Arrowhead, and west to Palmdale / Lancaster. We say we are in the foothills, but at 5000 + feet, they are really mountains. We have a clear view of the Antelope Valley to the west and the Victor Valley to the east. It's beautiful and so peaceful. Mixed type housing with most everyone on 2 1/2 to 5 acres, quite rare for So.Ca. Dirt roads except the main ones, so not everyone's cup of tea. We love it!

Thanks for the kind words about my gardens. I could live out there and sometimes fall asleep on the porch swing. My DH has to call me in like a little kid. lol

So, Georgeanne - curtains? Nay or yay?

Diana, thanks for answering ('cause you didn't hafta...lol). We're quite familiar with Hwy. 138, as we have a cabin up in Arrowbear. How beautiful it is up by Wrightwood....I used to go to a Girl Scout camp near there....Singing Pines, I believe.
