Never fauxed painted--which one should I try?

Hi,

I posted this at the Decorating Forum so I apologize if you read it there also.

I need help deciding which faux paint would be good and the colors. Thank you guys for your help. I've never faux painted but I think I can.

I painted three major colors in this new house. The kitchen, breakfast and family room are terracotta. The entry, mudroom, den (library type room) dining room and laundry are olive green. The master and master bath are a tan.

I want the house to end up with a Western, slightly rustic feel.

While I love terracotta, with the rusty brown floor, the overall feel is just a bit too orange for me. I'm thinking maybe I should do some faux painting with the "Woolie (Home Depot) look. I can't decide what colors to mix. If you don't mind going to my link below, I would love your input.

I also included a sample of my granite--the actual piece is nicer than this photo. It's more of a true coffee with cream/tobacco look.

Another problem I have is that I used bullnosed sheetrock so it's very difficult to start and stop different colors.

In the photos the green looks more green than the true olive green it is.

You wanted my thoughts on your home well here they are...OMG, when can I move in with you? LOL What a beautiful home you have! Geesh, if I had to do anything and I don't think that you really need anything, I guess I would maybe tone down the kitchen by adding a lite touch of a wash to the walls. Boy, your home is beautiful. This would just give it more demention. I love the colours you have picked. They compliment each other so well. I have added a site that you could check out some ideas. I don't know if you know her or not but I refer to her books all the time. Go to www.debbietravis.com. Then go to Room or Technique. You can get a lot of ideas here. And she shows you how to apply them to your home. Hope this helps a bit.
Please let us know what you have done and keep us up to date on the pictures. I love the kitchen windows. Looks like a ranch type judging by the fence I see out the window. Just BEAUTIFUL...where is this lovely home of yours? Just being nosey! LOL

Thank you for all your kind comments. This house has been overwhelming to complete. I'm 35 miles from the metro area and I was the general contractor. It's a concrete house with foam and steel. It's way too big so come on over! You can help me vacumn!!! I'm in MO.

The railing you see through the window is on the deck.

I'm going to try to figure out how to do a color wash. From what I've seen, that is my favorite faux look--especially for such a large space. However, the samples I tried last night just look milky.

Can the color be thinned with water instead of the glaze?

Northspruce...ROFL..I thought the same thing about the "domestic help"...Very interesting...I'll remember to use DW...beacuse she is dear and like all of the spouses, thinks' I've lost my mind about gardning...oh, she loves the finished product...but thinks I'm nuts..(a debatable topic) Why I like this forum....there is a spirit about those of you in the far north I don't see elsewhere...I can't explain, sorta frontierish but more like resourceful..self reliant and innovative......I'd take the summers if I could do without the winters...then again, today I got bitten by fire ants, a real problem in the south...and every time it happens I SWEAR I'm moving to say...ORegon? Certainly not far north...but a 2 day trip away perhaps to Souther Canada... Anyway, I hope some of you continue to put up pics...I really enjly them. I spent all day planting things I got on sale for $1 at Lowe's, Salvia Greggii, some other salvia's, Tennessee coneflowers, and even some sad looking zinnia's...a good snip, some fertilizer, and they'll be blooming in 2 weeks...sure was hot today....90's...I';ll make you a deal,,I'll send up some warm if you'll send a bit of cool...of course, when the cool weather gets here, it means you guys are under snow...so I'll be patient! Sierra...batting eyelashes is no fair and against the rules!!!! ( even my daugher's now figured that one out...."Daddy"...flash flash....oh, the camera thing....shame on me, I have an nice (now old and not enough pixels) video with a still feature, I lost the download cord, so there it sits...so now I use an Easyshare 3.1 MP, bought it for my daughter...works for the most part.....and very handy...I'd like something that is simple to use, easy to download, and no fooling around with photo editing programs....and some good closeups.....and I just can't imagine what it looks like when cars go by....

It's really not that hard. I did everything myself except lay the carpet in my basement including plumbing, electrical, framing, insulation, cabinets, drywall, paint and HVAC. The drop ceiling was the easiest of it all. The key is deciding where the best center of the room/starting point is. Lets say the room is 13 by 27.75 largest measurements if room is not 100% square. Take the 13 dimension....you don't want to start in the exact center, have 6 full tiles and then have a 6 inch tile at either wall....you dont want to start at one side and have 6 full tiles and a 12 inch tile on the opposite side....what you do want is 5 full tiles and roughly 18 inch tile at both walls. It will look much better this way. So in this case you'd lay out the starting track 5 ft, 6 inches from the wall (two full tiles plus an 18 inch tile). Go thru the same exercise for the other dimension. Even though it might look Ok to just start at one side, lay out 13 full tiles and then have one about 21 inches...that only will work if the wall is dead straight and happens to be a perfect right angle to that first track you set up before. Better way is find the slot in that first track closest to the center of the 27.75 dimension and set your first crossbar. You'll have 13 full tiles and the ones at each end will be a few inches shy of full. The general idea is have the tiles along the wall always less than full but always as big as possible. I haven't read any of the links so i hope I'm not contradicting them.

I think it's a swell gift idea and would be pleased to find it in my stocking so I hope your gifts were received with good cheer, Lynn. My friend's son recently had his done and was tickled to find some Australian native DNA in his background. Scandinavian/German/Italian was all that was in the oral tradition of the family, so it was a neat surprise. Our family's Ancestry.com hobbyist received an email from a "surprise" cousin that we did not know we had, after several family members' DNA was registered. Photos were exchanged and yes, there is no way to deny the blood kinship--he looks just like the rest of us, poor fellow. The generation of folks who might have been shocked/hurt by this surprise family member are all gone, and I am glad for him that his lifelong question of paternity could be answered. I can see that it might be awkward for younger families who find out they have siblings they never heard of, but I'm a fan of sunlight in dark family corners-- and I also think it's time that some kinds of families stop acting like those situations never happen "among our kind of people", lol. I also had my dog's DNA done and I'm getting our newer dog's done, too. Very fun to find out what went into these rescue/shelter mutts we love.

Re Phlox paniculata : have never had the species (wild type) in my gardens and have always removed the few seedlings which came from the 30 or so cultivars I've planted and maintained over numbers of years. Garden phlox cultivars require some amount of maintenance, including regular division, at least in my experience. There are several reason to deadhead them, but an obvious one is to prevent any seeding. Any offspring, I've seen in other gardens, had the flower-colour of the species, typically a washed-out magenta. In my experience, maintaining healthy garden phlox is part of avoiding powdery mildew here.

Absolutely magnificent! The potential is incredable! Boy, more now than ever I want in! LOL... I am a advid gardener. No pro by any means, but I love it. Can I ever see plants, flowers trees and who needs to put in a pond when you alread have the "Pond elite" Thanks for the huge smile. Now, onto your painting....boy, can I go on! LOL
When I did my living room by ragging it, I didn't use glaze. It turned out wonderful. I'll try to take a picture and show you. Anyway, the problem with not using glaze is it dries really fast. If you don't want to use glaze and do it my way, do a small area at a time Orrrrrr....have a few friends over and have a painting party. Did this at a friends house and you'll be so surprised at how fast things go and how much fun and laughing will go on. A little food, a little wine (very little wine, you want a beautiful wall) and a lot of good friends make for the best of times. Wish I could come and join in...I'll bring the hoursdouvres!(sp)

This was my first attempt at Faux finish, I found it easy and fun. Base was Benjamin Moore copper mountain, sponged with BM Terra Mauve (6 parts glaze to one part paint) The rest of the room is BM Shaker Beige with Navajo white trim.

Hi Lynneblack, Looks very nice, I think you did a great job. I've not really done much faux painting--I did try some sponge painting in a guest bedroom at another house, but was never to crazy about how it looked. I think the glaze probably makes it look better. What tool did you use--paintbrush, rags, sponge? You must have been checking out all the old posts on here--this one was orignally from 2002! Nice they have stayed on so long. Hope you'll keep joining in here. Luvs

Thanks for the kind words. I played around with some practice boards and found that mixing the glaze 6 pts to paint one part gave me the subtle effect I wanted and took long enough to dry that it was very forgiving of errors (i.e. just wipe it off and go again). I used a 4" sea sponge dipped it in the glaze/paint mixture and squeezed it till it was almost dry. It was really easy and my husband who is a (OMG what was wrong with the white walls?) kind of guy loves it and keeps raving about it...He is particularly happy that I put his collection of old samurai swords on the foyer wall and it really shows them off.
