Complete idiot's guide to mosaics?

WUVIE

Having finished a few nice little projects, I've

decided to venture into something large. Suddenly

I understand why so many people start and never finish

mosaic projects.

I've surfed the internet for "Complete Idiot's Guide

to Mosaics" but can only come up with books referencing

computer software. Even though I myself own a small

library of mosaic books, I'm stumped when it comes to

the confusing lingo.

Hardiboard, Hardibacker, concrete board, Wedi board.

Huh?

Mortar, thinset, concrete, grout, adhesive, mastic.

Huh?

Tile cutters, tile nippers, wheeled nippers, clippers.

Huh? Don't get me started on substrate.

I'm dreaming, not only for myself, but for everyone,

for a website in common English with easy-to-understand

terms and explanations. A chart would be super as well.

Wouldn't it be neat if there were a website with

columns and boxes? All you would have to do is click

all your choices, then click one last time and a list

of what you need pops up.

For example, start with indoor or outdoor.

If yes, go to question number two. If no, skip to three.

Will the item be under water, near water, get wet?

If yes, go to...etc. Does this make sense? Does such

a thing already exist?

I see such a variance on the internet in material

suggestions. One says use mastic. One says thinset.

Another uses Weldbond and so forth.

Name brands often help because a lot of the home

improvement or hardware store employees don't know any

more than we do. When I walk into a store and as for

thinset, it's a crapshoot.

Help! Many thanks!
