Second Buoy grouted and done.

I was only planning on grouting it this coming weekend, but it's -22C outside so we have to keep the woodstove going in the basement to keep the house warm, and when that happens, I start playing.

The stars are that of the sea - Stella Maris being the parish I was raised in. The Italian vitreous tiles created the seaweed, and then there's the bubbles in the water created by the glass beads. The background is a bit dark, but then again, so is the sea at times.

Thanks everyone. I'm all smiley and giddy hearing your kind comments. It melts me heart. I'm glad to hear people like the backsplash tile. It is pretty bold. I was also THRILLED with how the stain on the island turned out. Interestingly, lots of people say the kitchen has a peaceful look and feel to it and that wasn't necessarily something I was aiming for but my kitchen mission statement did include "casual but sophisticated/elegant" which might boil down to "peaceful or tranquil". We feel very blessed to have been able to do such a large scale kitchen remodel and are thrilled with how everything turned out. It also means we won't be moving for the next 15+ years! I can't wait until the bar stools are in and I can start serving snacks to my kids there. We are borrowing one bar stool right now and it gets a lot of use. clarygrace and others - I'm glad to hear you think the colors are coordinate b/c I was in a quandary about that at one point. I can't wait to see your kitchen and island. We love the shape of ours but did it b/c it worked within our constraints. We didn't want to mess with the existing deck outside the bay windows and we couldn't push right much more either b/c of the powder room. And speaking of the powder room - here are pictures of that which was also part of this remodel: tea4all - the pantry is pretty small as far as walk-in pantries go. Finished dimensions are 5.5' long by 46'' wide. We weren't originally going to do a pantry but it made sense with the rest of the layout (it brought the oven closer to the rest of the kitchen) and I am really glad we did! It was actually framed larger and had to be redone b/c large aisles were more important to me than a few more inches in the pantry. The other detail I forgot to include - the grout color on the backsplash is Custom Grout Light Smoke and on the floor it is Lacrete Parchment (just in case someone really wants to know - ha!)

Welcome Barbara1NC, it is great to have you join this supportive, fun, and informative forum. Ya, I took them all apart. No it did not come in a herringbone at the store I was working with. Early in my search all the tiles I liked were at specilty shops and were $30=50/sqft. I was looking a veined silver travertine mosaic running bond, and larger tiles. I wanted to spend a lot less money, so I went the the big DIY tile shop in town. They had plenty to choice from. I looked for a tile that I liked and it took me 3 trials before I settled on this one, the running bond marble mosaic. I had always figured I would do a running bond. But I just love herringbone. So I gave it some thought from time to time over the months that I had the tile, waiting to get to the installation stage. I was warned off of doing it by friends and family because there would be so many cuts. I agreed and would just assume I was going to put the 12x12 mosaics up until the moment I went to pick it up to install it. I just decided that I was going to cut it up and put it up in a herringbone pattern. I have done a lot of "making" in my life. I used to sew as a child and young adult. I have sculpted and fabricated all kinds of things in college in the art classes I took. I'll tackle anything if it's not too heavy to lift. So it was not a stretch to take the tile and redesign the layout. Tonight I am doing the other wall and it is a bit larger than the tiled wall pictured above. It is still taking me about 2 hours/1sqft. Its very late because time has just gotten away from me. I said this earlier but I have to say it again - my grout looks like the color of stainless steel. Isn't that cool?! I have stainless steel sink and faucet, etc in the kitchen and it just matches my grout! Then of course the marble tile is so beautiful. Even though this is not high end tile I think the mix of so many light whites and tans and grays is very nice. Marble is translucent, and very soft focused. Looking at this installation is like watching clouds in the sky.

Hi worldmom - thank you! The fixture is from Rejuvenation but I'm sorry that I don't know its name! I only got that fixture temporarily (got it in person since they're local) so my electrician could see what would be used canopy-wise (same canopy size as the one that's coming in the mali that had to be special ordered). The electrician made a hole off-center in the ceiling and it was supposed to be centered and he was moving things a bit so needed a canopy to know what's what. He misunderstood me and installed it so I have to unscrew it and return it soon! I like the George one! The one I'm getting is the kind that instead of hanging by a rod, is hanging by a black cloth-covered cord. I'm doing a polished nickel canopy and socket and a glass white shade (cone style, kind of wide). The fixture I'm getting is called Willis. The shade I'm getting isn't on their website but is in the store. It looks like the one in the link I'll put here only it doesn't have lines etched in it. Not sure if the link will look (I did the customizing thing in which you play around with the pictures - fun huh!)... That looks like it was costly and would be so disappointing. I think he did a poor job of layout on the rest of the tile as well, especially in the niches. You might be able to color the grout you have so you don't risk harming the waterproofing on the floor (and someone is going to come along any minute and ask how he built the guts of the shower and waterproofed it). It that's as bad as the tiling, you may have no choice about a redo. Look for grout colorant for the type of grout you have.

Thanks! I think I'm getting back into the swing of things. That floater has been waiting for me to grout it for a couple of months. It was high time!

I started a little kettle tonight. One of those aluminum ones for coffee that has a wooden handle and a little glass top. Bought it at the flea market before the holidays.

More like Dang! X 3. Even the dogs won't go out to chase the deers away! Should be back to the zero mark tomorrow, so we'll all be cozy and warm.

Oh, how beautiful. I LOVE this. The pink glass and those lime green blobs are dazzling against the dark blue. Beautiful work - as always. Ooooooooooo - looking forward to your tea kettle/coffee pot. Huuuuuuuuuury.

Wow I like that buoy even more than the other one!!! It looks so great.

Im feeling guilty now...I was whining earlier about it being cold here..should I even say it was 35 degrees. Man that probably feels like summer to you!!!! Brr I have never been in weather that cold. Drink some cocoa for me and get warm!!!

How imaginative! Love the colors and design and how they are not distorted on the round. Have a lot of trouble with that myself.

When I saw a few of you mentioning pink, I had to go back to look since I didn't put pink on there. Sure enough, it was the seaweed, made from the Italian vitreous tiles. The colour is actually a metallic copper. LOL!!

As with all projects, I'm not as fast as most are here and have been staring at my little kettle tonight... I wish I could snap out of those stages when a wall just seems to hit you.

That's the reason I always love to have a few things on the go. Birdhouse here I come!!

Tiffy, I love your buoys! Your color choices are great! Beautiful job! Now I want to go shopping for buoys.

Did you do any prep prior to adhering the glass? What did you use for adhesive? Curious since I'm thinking they are made of styorfoam - maybe I'm wrong.

I use GEII for everything I do, and it worked well on the styrofoam. It's different styro though. Really dense. The surface appeared to have a coating on it (maybe not) so I sanded it a bit with sandpaper for metal to make it rougher.

If you live in an area that supplies fishermen with anything and everything, they should have them. Right price too - $3.00 for this one!

Oh. That explains your response to my question about the old glass ones. I had thought you'd bought antique buoys, and was wondering about their inventory of OLD buoys. Very nice price indeed for a new one.
