Small Bedrooms & Loft Beds

Our house has the smallest bedrooms I've ever seen. So, we've built up to accomodate sleeping (as in lofts).

This is our guest room, used to be my dd's room. Relatives can sleep on the full-size bed below, and the kids in the loft.

My son (excuse the mess) uses the space under his loft as his entertainment center. His gaming, tv, and electric bass are stored there, along with his gaming chair.

What a great idea! We actually had something similar in my son's room when he was little. Then we just had a bunk with a dresser under it instead of an extra bed. It worked out great. Now his old room is our office, has been for 9 years now and I have plenty of room for an L shaped area for 2 desks & computers. I just don't know what he was complaining about all those years....LOL.

Our bedroom is also very small but we remedied the need for storage with a pier group headboard and an extra dresser. I think I have pictures of our room that show just how small it is but we did block the window with our headboard. Sure makes it nice in the mornings as that's an eastern window and so the sun doesn't wake you up.
And the Guest room is very small but my daughter never complained, unlike her brother. She just filled her space with shelves and furniture and lived there until 3 years ago when she bought the place next door to us. Now that we're official empty-nesters, I think I've got plenty of room.

I've had several loft beds in my lifetime. My bedroom in one trailer we lived in when I was in first grade (I think) (I moved around a LOT because my parents divorced when I was 5 and had joint custody, which I hated) was so small that a regular twin mattress took up more than half of the floor space. My dad built a loft bed so I would have somewhere to play and still be able to fit my dresser into the room because there was no closet.

I also had a loft in college dorms (three adult women in a 15x18 room *shudder*) and in a couple of shoebox-sized apartments. The hardest part was making the bed... I admit that often I got lazy and just used a sleeping bag because I got so sick of whacking my head on the ceiling trying to make the bed. :-(

NaviJen, pleased to see you posting with us. Mass. is a whole different style of housing than what I'm used to in Alabama. Like lower ceilings, big basements, storm windows, dormers, angled ceilings upstairs. And I've been surprised at the absence of air conditioning (a necessity built into every home in south Alabama), and the intrusive nature of many heating systems--including radiators, baseboard heaters, boilers and oil tanks! Those things take up a lot of space and money to operate also. As older folks who married almost four years ago (second spouses), my DH has a home up there, and I have one down here. That's why I sometimes do a flip-flop from north to south, you will notice. I've been redoing his house AND mine. Jen, be sure to hang in there with us, a lot of creative ideas come from this group of folks. And Steph, you are so unique, giving your boy his own bedroom!!! I'm thinking you need to get out more? hehehehe Having huge antique furniture can be a drawback in a smaller home. Of course, ONE PIECE could fit, maybe, if it is a featured piece. Something that WORKS FOR ITS KEEP. I do hope you have room for the things you've STORED FOR 14 YEARS?!! At least, put it in place and see if it leaves enough breathing room. After all this time, you may have fantasized it into something it can never be, and you've grown out of it....so to speak. Dreams are hard to give up. If I had a good spot to put it, I'd be looking for a nice armoire...just because I like those. But I realize it won't fit my house or my lifestyle any more.

Well, you could downsize to a queen bed. I had a queen bed all those years I was single and I wasn't sure that it would work just to slip DH into the bed I was used to having all to myself. But it works fine. Are you using all the vertical storage in your closets? Get some of those cube units from Target for shoes and bags so you can go all the way to the top of the closet. or even cut into the wall above the closet to put a second set of doors up there for access. Also -- and I know this isn't easy to do -- it's probably time to go through your stuff and pare down. DH and I have found over our seven years together that a lot of the "stuff" we were holding on to just wasn't really that important to us. It helps that we are in the South so don't have HEAVY winter clothes (complete different wardrobe) to deal with. Is fashion extremely important to you? If not, then maybe it's time to pare down to a small group of quality bags and shoes rather than the big collection you have now. Also, I'll bet there are some you never wear/use, but hold onto them because you remember them fondly when you DID wear/use them. If buying new fashion items is important to you, consider getting into the consignment world. Consignment stores typically don't take things more than a few seasons old, so it would help you keep your things fresher. it will also help fund the "habit." DH and I found that we both had tons of T-shirts we never wore because they were from some event. But we never wore them! He also had a lot of sweaters that looked like they came straight from the Cosby Show. Just because they were nice and expensive in 1990 doesn't mean you should hold onto them indefinitely. I read somewhere that the trick to paring down is to do it in stages. Pack up the items you haven't worn/used in 6 months or a year. Move them in boxes to the garage/attic/basement. After 6 months or a year in the box, it is time to let them go -- you clearly don't need them anymore.

Loft beds with study/desk underneath work well in small bedrooms. BUT! Need detailed actual room size - ie: floor plan - to help you. Knowing your son's age would also help.

Marilyn, funny you mention the window in the bedroom, my hubby got mad and took our's out!!! I couldn't believe it. We still have one window left since it's a corner room in the house.

johanmari--yes, making the bed is a pain. That's the only downside. Luckily, my son can make his own, and the guest room one doesn't need changed often.

Pianolady, how funny! We only have one window, but it actually stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

what a great use of space. Your guest room is very welcoming and usable. How nice that a couple can their children to your home and feel welcome.

My DD has a loft bed in her room. She has her desk under hers. It has been really good for giving her extra room. Without the loft there would be no where for her to have a desk in her room. The only downside is that it gets hot in the summer because the heat rises. When it's really hot she sleeps on the couch or in the spare room.
