Metal Headboard only or with footboard?

To those who have a metal headboard, do you have it with or without a footboard? What was your deciding factor? Does it make the bed less "user friendly" since you can't sit on the end? Also if my room is not real large would it be obtrusive? Or does the footboard give it more of a finished look?

I found a couple online sources for a Hillsdale metal headboards that offers free shipping. Anyone ever shopped from Humble Abode or Headboard Source.com?

I have 2 metal beds - one with headboard only and the other has a very low footboard - it doesn't even come to the top of the mattress.

In a small bedroom I think a high footboard is intrusive, that's why we went with a low profile one. mMybe it's just me but I'm not fond of footboard. I like a cleaner look without one.

I have an "antique" brass headboard. I put it in quotes because there were no king sized beds back in the day. It was a smaller antique bed with both a headboard and a footboard that was made into a king sized headboard. I like the headboard only look.

You must be talking about Tasymo's blue bench and her beautiful red/blue shed. She's on the Garden Junk side. You can do a search for benches or sheds. I have just started visiting this side a few days ago, and wonder why it's so slow. GJunk side is very fast-moving.

Hi, I use industrial oil base paints (alkyd) on metal. The prep is about the same for any paint. If it's raw metal, knock off the rust, prime it, then paint. If the paint on the item is sound, just rough it up and paint. This paint takes about 2 days to dry, but is worth it. It lasts for years and is available at large paint stores and Home Depot, etc. I find it at swap meets from job ends. Spray paint is quick and easy, but won't last as long. If the headboard is going to be covered with plants, it doesn't matter how it's painted. Linda

I forgot to add ONE HUGE DETAIL!!! The mattress height from the top of the mattress to the floor is 29" with a steel frame that is 8" from the floor. Boxspring is 9", mattress is 12." So the bottom of the bottom of the mattress sits 8" from the floor. Most complete beds with a head and footboard are 10+" from the bottom of the boxspring. I would be adding at least two additionalinches to the bed height! That is my DILEMMA! This is what happens when I peruse the forum prior to having my morning coffee!!! Sorry I inadvertently left out this big detail. That is the reason I do not think I can use a foot-board. I don't want a step stool (or ladder -haha) to get into the bed! I know the style of bed I want, but the challenges lies in trying to find that bed with a frame that is less than 10" from the floor.

Has anyone ever used only the headboard portion of a complete bed?

I have an old art deco bed with a 12" deep headboard (it has a bookcase or niche or whatever you wanna call it) and about 8" of footboard, waterfall style with big chunky feet. To fit it in a tiny guest room, I bought a plain metal frame and stuck the footboard and rails in a closet. Didn't even attach them as the headboard can stand on its own. I think the very tall guest appreciates it. That footboard isn't very big. Just try it out and if it doesn't work, put the extra parts in the attic. :) Or....find a vintage bed like this one is trying to copy. It'll be better quality and you won't feel like you paid full price for a bunch of extra parts.

We have a Wesley Allen metal headboard, no footboard. As long as I'm married to DH, I'll never have a footboard because he's over 6'4"! It just doesn't work for him. Secretly I have always wanted a sleigh bed...but, I want to stay married to him more...so far, anyway. ;)

No metal, but not foot board...I like to have an easy time tucking in sheets and blankets at the foot of the bed and a foot board gets in the way.

Imo, as long as the footboard isn't too high, a footboard can serve the useful function of holding the coverlet, comforter or other covers that you don't use while you sleep. When space is at a premium, you don't have space for a bench or bedding cluttering the floor. :)

OK, you've all confirmed what I thought. A footboard is nice decorative touch, but not really a practical item. I'll just go with the headboard for now.
