Seeking Teakettle - Does an Ergonomic, Nice Whistle Exist?

I am actually shopping for my Mom. Her Chantal Classic teakettle has bit the dust after about 10 years of constant day-in day-out use, so we can't complain. We can either get her another Chantal, or if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I know that a couple of things I would improve over the Chantal is a stay-cool handle (her current Chantal has a metal handle that requires a pot holder), and a less shrill whistle which is still loud enough. Are these impossible to fulfill? She has an electric cooktop, if that makes any difference. I looked on the Chantal website, and saw the "Eva", and the "Loop", both of which have a stay-cool handle. But the "Loop" style received poor reviews on Amazon, and the Eva only had 1 review, so hard to tell. So, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's a list of tea kettles. I like the Windsor, classy looking.

I know there are tea kettles that have a three tone whistle, instead of the shrill whistle.

There's one with a harmonica whistle

My Mom swears by her OXO Uplift kettle, and it does have a great sound, not really a whistle at all but a pleasant steady harmonic hum.

We're talking about tea, right? The water temperature to make the tea depends on what type of tea you drink (ie, green, oolong, black, etc.) In general, like Cotehele mentioned, you want barely boiling water to brew your tea. Overheating the water reduces its oxygen content and causes the tea to taste flat. This is the reason that these devices shuts off once reach a near boiling temperature. That is if the device is manufacturer to make/brew tea. It is also a thermo and able to keep the tea warm for a long period of time. An inexpensive way that my family uses for years is we brew tea a bit stronger in a teapot and keep hot water in a thermo on the side. During the day, we pour some tea in the cup and add hot water to it. The combination would make the cup of tea at the right temperature throughout the day. As for choosing a teapot, chose ones that is made from material that retains the heat for long hours. One such is the Yixing teapot. These teapots are made of a special purple clay that only exist in Yixing, China. This special clay retains heat well for hours. My sister had given me a beehouse teapot that I found it retains heat for hours also. Using a tea warmer is effective too.

Agree with the manual transmission! Getting harder to find. When I was buying my new car, my mechanics, inspection guy, etc. all urged me to go with automatic transmission, but I stuck to my guns and got a manual transmission ('08 Toyota Matrix). There are very practical reasons for going with manual. They're about $1,000 less than auto transmission, they get better gas mileage, you have A LOT more control in snow with manual transmissionÃ¢ÂÂ¦and shortly after I bought the car (my old one was also manual - I was taught to drive manual in Beacon Hill, Boston, by my father!), gas went over $4/gal. With manual transmission, you can "hyper mile", which means coast in neutral down hill. I still do it to this day, now out of habit, and I get on the highway as much as between 50 and 60 mpg by hypermiling. The manager at Toyota told me that the trend now is that women are asking for manual transmission. Interesting. However, I don't recommend it if you live in the city or do mostly city driving. And definitely not if you live on Beacon Hill or in San Francisco! I am very nervous that it is going to be obsolete by the time I have to buy my next car.

I love my Le Creuset!!! I'm just surprised to see so many others here who do too. But it's not the dutch oven. That's very good, but I think any round cast iron dutch oven would be just as good. It's the "special" shapes that I adore. My very favorite pot is the first Le Creuset I bought as an impulse buy. It's the 2.5 qt. soup pot. I use it for all kinds of stuff. Love the angled sides. Love the pot. Love it. Tied for second are the really big braiser (shallow and wide like a paella)--can't remember the capacity (5 qt.?), but it's gotta be more than a foot across--and the 1 qt. saucier. I love them both! Equally. No, wait!! My second favorite (1.5 favorite) is the little skillet that comes as the cover of the two quart saucepan. Mine is old and has the white enamel, which I like better than the black. LOVE this pan. Don't so much love my 5 qt. oval dutch oven. It's very useful. Throw in a bird and pop it in the oven and call it a small roaster. On the stove it's hard coordinating the temperatures in the middle vs. ends. But I've even used it to can marmalade. Another fave is the apple shaped tarte tatin. I've never actually made a tarte in it. It's great for browning stuff in. I've never seen it in person, but I think the Demeyere John Pawson line is gorgeous I'm not sure how the handles feel, what the balance is, or anything like that, but it's shore purdy!

Thanks for all the input. I still don't think I'm going to go for electric--I heat up about a cup of water every other day. I will check out the Revere, Chantal, and Le Creuset kettles. I found the Simplex online, and it was WAY out of my price range. I may go to Chinatown and look for the classic Chinese retaurant tea kettle touted in mtnrdredux's link (Top 10 tea kettles). Aliris19: That's why I need one that whistles. I also don't heat up that much water at a time, so it only takes a couple minutes--not enough time to wander off and forget it. Marcolo: Yes, most tea kettles steam when you pour, but the KitchenAid actually spattered. I had to have my daughter stand back 2 feet, and I always ended up with a puddle under her cocoa mug. I think it's a design flaw (neither of my other two recent kettles had this issue). My husband had a tea kettle when we got married that I used for many years. I don't think it was expensive, and it worked fine. No issues, no complaints. But he kept it when we separated. It just never occurred to me that I was going to be fussy about tea kettles, or that there was so much variation in them. Thanks again, all!

Why not get her an electric kettle? Wayyyyy faster and more efficient than a stove-top one. Also safer since they most (all?)now have auto shut-off.

I'm in love with my Le Creuset Tea kettle. The handle does not get hot, plus it seems like the thing is indestructible. The whistle is nothing special, but it is kinda loud, which I prefer.

I had a Revere ware kettle for years. Then found a Calphalon (non-whistling) which lasted for 10+ years before gave out. Now I have a Windsor. Love having the whistle back. Can't wait to find it in all my boxes to put on my new cooktop.

I love my Simplex. It has a wooden handle that doesn't get hot and a pleasant whistle. Plus it's so pretty it's like a sculpture on my stove. :-)

We have the Chantal Loop (brushed stainless). Got it w/ a coupon, too!

We like it because you don't burn yourself trying to open the spigot to pour the hot water (our old teakettle did just that!). It states in the ad/write-up something about the "pleasant whistle," but unless ours is a defective one, we wouldn't qualify it by calling it pleasant--more like an air raid siren. At least it gets our attention!
