Next project - Address Marker

Here's what I have to work with and what I have to work on. It's going to be an address marker so I've pulled out the brightest and thickest china I have. I'm going to try not to nip into such small pieces so it will be more visible and take a little less time. Haven't used vit glass in awhile so I ordered small quantities (most about .60) of lots of different colors to hopefully mix in.

WOW! Won't that be colorful? I'm in love with those plates with the white flowers! Looks like you'll have a lot of fun doing this. Looking forward to seeing WIP pic's.

Holleygarden, that is exactly what I was thinking about seeing them when they aren't blooming. Especially for new gardens, not established. I frequent the Antique forum (thanks to Ashdown, I was bit! :-)). I must have missed Juliets tale. My Dad is very sweet, so sweet I have given him a bunch of rose plants! Kinda like when I was doing Persian cat rescue, my parents ended up with a few. :-) He's glad I am into roses now... Trish, you better get a production line going! lol Are you up to 400 roses now? Whew! How awesome is it that your roses are a chick magnet! My boy is the same age (I believe) I am going to have to subliminally program him..... I am so happy for you! Right now my son is looking at my canes and leaves and finding leaves that don't look "well" and pointing them out like I am doing something wrong!! Niiice. As an aside, "Old Gray Cemetery Noisette" and La Marne(poly tea), both from Ashdown, have a couple blooms. The blooms and fragrance are AWESOME!!! The blooms on both last forever, on plant. I have NEVER smelled roses like this, just heaven. (I don't have the different rose smells down what so ever so I can't tell you what they are like, darn it.) Allison

I've used mini blinds and they work well but I prefer cutting strips from some kind of plastic poster board I bought at an auction 1/2 a lifetime ago. A goodly remaining supply will be among the goodies willed on to my chillins someday! But the point of my post really is to recommend that whatever marking method you use, fasten labels prominantly to the top of your stake or cage/ whatever support method you choose for your plants, so you can easily associate your observations on a daily basis with the correct plant name/and variety info as the season goes on. Written recording of observational data is certainly the most reliable way to go; but even casual observation and impressions will build a pretty darn good data bank for us over years. The key is correct labeling followed by observation and/or data collection and recording. My buddy Spike, bless his heart, has little appreciation for precise data collection; to him tomatoes are red, pink, yellow, or whatever. When we transplant I have to watch him like a hawk. Coincidentally, he has demonstrated a knack for getting the little boogers transplanted with a very high survival rate. So I just become the recorder and it works out very well for us.

I made one on a silver tray several years ago, then moved, so it got left behind for the new owner :( They are pretty heavy when finished, so make sure that they are attached tightly to the wall, or wherever they are being put. I hung mine between 2 well-positioned trees with chain like on the 1960ish hanging lamps. Recycling is good. It was heavy enough that the wind didn't move those babies one iota. :)

What a great idea, using a tile! You could fill it with sand or rocks so it wouldn't go over in the wind (but still be moveable if needed), and put the address on three sides, and a pretty design on the side facing the house. Ok, so you've already thought of all that, haven't you? :) Just thinking this through as I type. I am lovin' this idea!

What fun, DIY! And I like your ideas, too, LR. Can't wait to see what you do with it. I was thinking of a house number plaque.. but this is a MUCH better idea!

Wow, what a great idea. I was going to make a (faake) rock marker, then I thought a sign, but this is a great idea. Looking forward to your progres!!

Love this idea! How big is the chimney tile and where would inquiring minds go to buy one? I've seen these used before and liked the idea.

Bought my chimney tiles at a brick company. Yours looks much larger than those offered here. Believe me LADY, these suckers won't blow over - took two men to lift the one I did for my Bro, which looked to be the size of this one. This w/be a wonderful piece in your front garden, DIY. W/be a fun piece to watch progress.

Thanks all! The tile is 24" high, mine is 8" square. The concrete block place where I bought it has square, rectangles and round up to about 12" wide. All of theirs are 24" high. I was tempted by the round but after that curvy bird bath....I need something to set at the end of my driveway. We live on a 2 house cul-de-sac and my new neighbors took down the #1 sign at the end of their driveway for some reason. Nobody knows which house is which. I think I will do my design and then put the #2 in something visible on top of the other tiles. I'm only going to do it on one side because I'm planning to move in a couple of years (hopefully son off to college). Can you imagine me telling a real estate person, "You need to only show me houses that begin with the number 2 so I can reuse my mosaic address marker."

Ha!! That's exactly why I won't do one. This is our 5th house in the last 7 years. I might do a smaller one though..

I think the pieces you have to work with are just beautiful. I can not see how you could go wrong on this project. Looks like it will be very fun to do.
