size and position of pulls on these IKEA drawers

hi,

Would you place these pulls on these IKEA drawers the way IKEA did in their floor plan, or further down? I think it looks more balanced in the exact vertical and horizontal center of the drawers, that is, further down, but on the other hand, the way IKEA has placed them makes them easier to reach, I do not have to bend so low. How about at the top of the central panel? I know it is just personal preference, but I am trying to get some opinions...

Finally, these pulls are 128 mm, is that more or less standard, just in case I need to change them in the future?

I see Lee Valley also carries 128 mm, but I have not checked other places.

Looks odd to me. But it may be rather ergonomic. 128mm works out to 5.04 inches (25.4mm =1"). That is an odd size for American standard dimensions. It may be standard for metric-I don't know.

I am usually slow in spotting visually odd things, but I noticed this too (may be due to the title of the post but...). I agree that they do not quite look right; middle of the drawer would have been better.

From ergonomic perspective, though, I think they would actually work out better.

This position would suit the modern flat styles better than the one shown in the picture.

Actually, what I meant by "original plan" was #4, which is the one I thought you came into this liking. That is, the standard arrangement for having the pull on the frame, plus the one you liked the looks of (I think) for the slab panel--assuming it doesn't conflict with the counter edge. Otherwise, one of the other similar arrangements. If you think the lower, panel centered, pulls will bug you, they probably will, and I'm totally with Lowspark that being not-annoying is by far the most important quality. I'm tall enough that I have to bend to open all but the top drawer anyway, and moreso to get what's inside, so the few inches difference totally doesn't bother me. If it bothers you, it bothers you, and as long as you don't overthink yourself into #5, which looks flat out weird, any of the arrangements will be fine. We can vote on one compared to the other, but if there's only one in the actual kitchen, there won't be any to say "but I like the looks of that better" to. We can obsess over an inch, but no one else will ever, ever know.

We used an 18-inch base cabinet with the deep drawer at the bottom and a shallow drawer on top. We attached a regular door front to the deep drawer hardware (can't remember exactly how we did it but it wasn't complicated). I didn't want to use the small IKEA trash bins so I looked all over to find the largest trash can that would fit the space; I can't remember exactly how big the can is (I think it was a Rubbermaid can) but it fits exactly side to side and top to bottom (without the lid) and is the perfect size for the Costco 13-gallon kitchen bags. I thought I would then look for a smaller can to fit behind for recycling but until I could find it we started putting a paper grocery sack behind the main can and it worked so well that I never looked for a smaller can. We reuse the sack until it gets too weak and then throw it into the recyling with whatever is in it. We've been using the trash set up for 2 1/2 years with no problems; the door/drawer seems as sturdy and stable as it did when we started using it. And that's with two teenagers who certainly aren't concerned about overstuffing the trash can.

Mine are Rusticware. They're hefty, and stand away from the cabinets enough to get a good grip. The pulls come in 3", 4", 5", and 6" sizes, and in satin nickel, weathered pewter, ORB and iron. The WP should go nicely with the pewter glaze on our cabinets. I'm like your DH -- I absolutely had to feel them before buying -- and I thought these felt great in the hand. It was one of the lines our cabinet company carries, and I was able to handle them there, but ordered online. I paid $4.70 for the 1.25" knob, $5.37 for 4" pulls and $6.29 for 5" pulls. I'd fallen in love with one of the Anne at Home designs, but in a large kitchen plus pantry, the $$ just added up too fast for those. I think I'll like these a lot. Good luck in your quest. Ikea now offers a choice of two drawer quality levels on most drawer sizes: forvara which is the cheapy, and maximera, which is closer to the old rationell in quality. Wonder why Ikea would downgrade the quality when it's their biggest selling point, imo? They do this constantly when they can get away with it. Ektorp sofas, for example, used to have down cushions, then foam cushions, and now crummier foam cushions. So now people complain that they're uncomfortable and people who've had one for a while wonder what they're talking about. Ikea's scale is like that of a big grocery store chain, where pennies on the cost of an item make a big difference in the bottom line, and since Mr. Ikea died and his son took over, they squeeze even harder.

Those slender pulls fit there well and make for less bending, but they do look slightly odd. I have Lidingo drawer cabs but placed my pulls in the center of the center panel. I used a good sized cup pull, however, and they likely wouldn't have fit very well on the top rail.

You could compromise and put them at the top of the center panel. It would keep it easier to reach but not be as drastically high.
I don't like how high it is on the cab door either....

OK Dawn, now you are going to have to spill the beans on your modifications- those great feet on the cabinets, your darkened wood counter, the details on your custom hood, pretty pretty please! What a wonderful kitchen!

I don't think the concept is odd at all - I've never understood the desire to put the drawer pulls lower down on the drawer. That seems to be a GW speciality (strange AND unergonomic - a true GW trait ;-) ). It is the second picture - also an IkEA display? - that looks espcially peculiar to me. In the first one, what seems odd to me is that pulls are biased low on the upper rail instead of centered on the upper rail.

But then again, it is a display unit.
