Two of my big mistakes

Maybe these big boo boos will keep somebody from making the same mistakes. The first pic is a GOG that shows plainly what happened when I had a main pattern I was repeating but got carried away with the too busy background so now you can't see the pattern. (The pattern is the hexagony thing in the bottom left if you can't find it.)It actually looks better with a flash and the sun than usual. Second big mistake...is the wooden post I was trying to use outside with the pile of china I just took off it. It is my only brightly colored china (inc my only Fiesta) so I wanted to salvage as much as I could to use on my new address marker. See the construction glue that was supposed to hold anything to anything? Thank goodness I found this forum before I did much of anything else.

OKAY, forget what you originally went for and celebrate what it became, because THAT WINDOW IS A SHOWSTOPPER!!!!

I'm so sorry about your post, glad you can still salvage and reuse the tesserae though.

Thanks Otis, I have enjoyed reading various comments here as well and frankly I have a lot more browsing to do. I have noticed quite a few posting by yourself as well as Yan here. I'm sure we have a great deal of information to share. I'm looking forward to our discussions. Yan, although Helena proper is listed a zone 4, I am in the center of the valley, whereas the city of Helena sits on the side of Mt. Helena on the south-west side of the valley. My weather patterns are a lot different even though I am only five minutes or five miles from town. Winds here can be three times higher than in town, and the moisture levels are considerably lower. Our frost lines do get down to about two feet but that is where my garden stops and the bed rock begins. My six raised beds are dug down into the bed rock or approximately four feet. The deepest raised bed is dug down five feet and contains well aged cow manure/straw. This bed has a combination of red wigglers, Euros, and Canadian night crawlers added to it. The red wigglers have pretty much taken over the bin, however I do see evidence of the other two worms from time to time. In the fall I dig a sizeable hole in the center of this raise bed and fill it with garden scraps. In the winter I cover the surface with black plastic and place three window panes over this bed and let it sit until spring. Worms will migrate to the lower levels, but by spring they will have pretty much devoured all of the garden scraps. I use the composted cow manure for potting mixes and filling large garden holes with a 50"50 mix of compost and top soil for tomatoes, squash, pumpkin and cucumbers. I also add a cottage cheese container teaming with red wigglers to these holes as well. I have an unlimited supply of well aged cow manure. and horse manure in various stages of decomposition. I add horse manure with straw bedding to an above ground out door compost bin which sets under my deck. Like my raised beds it is 4'W x 8'L, and 3.5'D. By sitting under my deck and next to the concrete wall of the house, I get some protection from the cold. I cover this bin with a wooden 1" x 4" frame which has 14ml opaque plastic sheeting (painters drop cloth) stapled to the frame and a tarp thrown over that. This compost bin under the deck also gets a healthy dose of garden and harvest scraps before winter. The only difference in the two outdoor bins is the under deck bin gets dosed with hot water periodically from an outdoor faucet I installed a year ago. Some of the horse manure in this bin is fairly fresh so adding hot water helps to boost the decomposition process in the winter months. By spring a few turnings is all that is required to complete the pulverizing process of the 'horse biscuits'. This may seem like a lot of compost but I never have enough. The main garden 60' x 100', four 4' x 60' rows, six 4' x 8' raised bed, fruit trees, etc., use a lot of compost. I also bring in three pickup loads of the well aged cow manure to till in each spring. I would like to figure out how to post pics here to help explain some of the things which I have been posting. Will do that as a follow up as soon as I can determine how its done. As a side note Yan, I wore out a shovel and pic ax establishing my garden, bins and planting fruit trees, and I have a rock wall 200ft long, 10ft wide and 6ft deep extending my back yard into a 40ft barrow ditch along my back year. This wall has been a dumping site for corn stalks: potato, bean, pea, squash and cucumber vines; and layered with horse manure as well. I have added another riser to my 20 riser irrigation system to plant this area next spring. It already has dill growing in one corner, and I figured I would decorate this area with an assortment of colorful gourds and maybe some small pumpkins this spring. Each year I now have people stopping who want some of my corn stalks for Halloween decorations. Figured they could help themselves to some gourds as well. morgan

First of all, you will get used to the noise. I'd visit Mom in FL whose house was a half mile away from the train tracks and the first day, I'd hear every train, but after that, hardly ever. Second, I think you need to get to know your neighbors...sounds like they are friendly types which is a good thing. I grew up in the country surrounded by lots and lots of land and few children because there were few houses. When I married and moved to an acre lot, it was terrible for awhile....all the traffic, the kids, the dogs, the mowers... Then I got to know my neighbors. And trust me, the chain saw isn't so loud when it's good neighbor Tim doing the sawing and you don't mind asking John if he could not mow on Saturday as you're planning on a memorial service for your Dad with lots of people coming.... And neighbors can be a great help, like when your snow blower breaks or when you need someone to feed the cat. I know our neighbor was glad for us when the house next to her's caught fire and the firemen wouldn't let her go home that night, so she spent the night with us. Every lifestyle has it's plusses and minuses. Change your perspective, seek the good, and then see where you're at. You may be surprised. BTW, we are now back home on 11 acres, but the area is so much more built up than when I was a kid. Even on our 11 acres though, I know when Bill is sawing or Jimmy is running his back hoe or when Norma is out mowing, or when Jessica's kids are playing with their dog. It's comforting.

Loda, for some reason iPads always seem to do that. If I am on my pc and post a pic no problem but if I post a pic I took with my iPad it shows sideways on the forum but looks perfect on my tablet. I was scrolling down thinking I was going to see something hideous and I don't think that at all. I love a rich chocolate brown also but I can see how using a lighter linen type curtain would brighten it up. Your window really looks quite nice just the way it is though. I agree with Jaysmom that you just aren't used to the look. When we put our hardwood floors in the first day I just freaked out and hated them. The second day when more of the floor was laid I thought it was looking good and by the third day I LOVED them. I believe this will happen with your windows also. A big change like that takes a few days to start to look "at home".

Update - I have been out of town since noon Thursday, and a lot has been happening at my house since then! In addition to the drawer height issue, I had a problem with my corner cabinet as well. It was supposed to be a super susan, and it showed up as a lazy susan. I talked to Dan about that immediately, but he had to figure out how to correct it before they did anything. I also had a couple of door fronts that weren't right. Thursday morning the installers were here. They took out the corner cabinet (luckily they only had to take out the trash cab to get to it). I left out my crock pot, which is the tallest item I'm putting there, and told them which susan would be the taller of the two. They took out the incorrectly sized drawers, and removed the glides for the top ones. Then my contractor friend showed up, to cut the hole in the wall for my range hood vent, and install the outside vent cover. He and the cabinet guys got house keys, so they could come back Friday. So on arriving home this afternoon, I found an installed corner cabinet - with super susan. Top drawers in the stacks are in place (but without fronts yet - they need to be stained and finished). They installed quarter round and the wood cover for my toe-kick vent. It is really starting to look finished! Contractor friend called me Friday - when he went outside to install the vent cover, he noticed that the sliding patio door was sticking (I knew this - I adjust the roller, but it slips back); he said he'd look for some heavy-duty rollers for me. The range hood is ready for the electricians. Electricians will be here this week, hopefully Monday or Tuesday. When they are done, I can put my fridge in place! Monday I'll call Dan to see if he has an install date for the countertops. I'm getting SO close! I've been having great fun putting things away. My son doesn't think I'll come even close to filling up all the space, though I am finding things I forgot I had. I wrote out a plan of what was going where, but I haven't consulted it - I'm going by what makes sense, now that I can see and feel the space. I'll take plenty of photos - inside and out - when I have everything put away and organized - and I have a working sink.

I looked at the picture before reading the full post and I was trying to figure out where the lesson to learn was!
It's a very striking beautiful interesting colorful window!! Sorry about the wooden post thingy...the china looks fun, were you able to salvage most of it??

I think the window looks great and its kind of fun to find the "hexagony things". Its like "find Waldo" ot something like that. I found 6 of them.

I love it when people post their mistakes. It's very informational.

I like the window but I know exactly what you mean about losing the pattern in the busy-ness of the background. When it's not what you wanted, it's a mistake - a bright funky window, but still a mistake.

OH DIY!..The colorful window is SO GREAT! So outside my comfort zone. Mistake or not, it's great. I'm glad you
can salvage the china from he post. I used that construction adhesive too, with heart breaking results.
Kinda scary thinking about what construction workers are using it for!

Well it might not have turned out what you thought it would be but IMHO it CERTAINLY is NOT a mistake. This is one of the most beautiful GOG's I have ever seen. I love the bright colors. Your grout lines are beautiful and so even. The color placement is wonderful. There is exciting movement in the overall look. And listen to me like I know what I am talking about. NOT Hehehe But honestly I LOVE this window. I agree that find the hexagon is interesting too. I did the same thing and spent time looking just for them.

I think this window sould certainly have a place of honor in your life. NOT A MISTAKE!!

I am sorry about the post. Lovely shards. Hope most can be saved. Maybe using that gule was a mistake. I shopped at Home Depot and was silly enough to ask a question and sales person told me all about this glue I was looking at while I was reading the lable. Said oh yes it would be fine to use. Right on the lable it said NOT to use for mirror. Or outdoor or something I do not remember now. Now I never ask I just keep reading lables. Sort of sad like Hazie said when they are using this stuff in construction.

Thank you all so much! I really wasn't trying to get compliments cause I really am disappointed in how I didn't see how busy it was becoming because I never plan anything. But you pointed out something I hadn't seen...love that hidden, find Waldo, MIA pattern idea. I think I'll look at it differently from now on. Thanks for your encouragement!
I salvaged about 90% of the china using a hammer and screwdriver to break it out of the grout. Since it was so weak, it was really quick. I bought a terra cotta chimney liner and will use either thinset or GE11 to do my next address marker. Now on to posts here for inspiration and ideas.....

Oh, bianchi, you got me interested. I didn't know how many "Waldos" were in the GOG - there's 9. I had to go find them in the real window cause they weren't that apparent in the picture!

DIY, Popping back in to tell you I just had to show your window to my hubby. Now he is a very sweet man that could care less about mosaic. OK just Setting the scene. I turned my computer so he could see your window and he said OH That is BEAUTIFUL!!! This is from some one that could care less about mosaics. This is saying BUNCHES about your window. I hardly get any comments like that from him.

There are 8?? OK Back to see if I can find the other two. LOL

I would've never thought that was a mistake. It reminds me of a windy stormy day with the hexagons flying about in the wind!! Very colorful.

I swear I must be dense or something...so the post was rotting and you had to chip the tile off or was the glue failing so you chipped the tile off?? Im thinking you ment the glue but wasnt sure...Im glad you can salvage all those pretty pieces though!!

Lady DY::::: Excaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuusssse ME!!! I found the nine points of interest, and this window is a wonderful piece. You can name it I Spy. This could NEVER be considered a mistake. Girlie, this forum can ALWAYS make you re-think what we call mistakes. I have experience in looking at my stuff in different eyes because of you wonderful artists. Congratulations on creating a beautiful piece of art.

It's like a game... the pinwheels kept popping out at me the more I looked!
It's almost like they were bouncing in and out of the picture! I really REALLY like that kind of art!
It's bright... it's beautifully worked... it's FUN... and I think... surely HOPE... that it will grow on you the more you look at it!

Never got back to thanking all of you for your kind comments. And, shades, that was so sweet of you to show your husband and so kind of him to compliment my work. It couldn't have come at a better time...I was feeling very underappreciated, if not downright incompetent, by my kids.

LOL DIY, My hubby was asking what I was oohing and aahing about so I showed him. See I kept turning my laptop this way and that trying to find the missing shapes. I just had to tell you because for him to say something is pretty is not a common thing. I usually get a shrug.

I do hope you are feeling better about your window and I have spent lots of time trying to think of a style name for this. I think there is a quilt pattern called Eye Spy. Not sure if it is the same idea as your window.

I think you need to do more of these. Remember many years ago the pictures you had to look at so hard to see the REAL pattern in them. Then once you did see it it would always pop at you. Can't remember the names of them either.

So keep on doing!! I have so much other work ahead of me right now I can not take the time I want to mosaic. Hoping by the end of the week I will be in better shape for some free time. So many GOOD ideas come up here.
