Update: New House Finished/DH Living There

I know I've dropped off the ends of the earth for months, but I feel like I've been living in the Twilight Zone for most of 2011.

Here is a picture of the house on Christmas Day 2010:

We got our certificate of occupancy in February, but there was so much going on at that point. I was swamped at work finishing up some hardware that had to make a launch date (I thought that would be my last project). And, I had to pack up all of the stuff DD left behind to put into storage (she was in Australia & Africa on a medical mission) so there would even be enough room to try to get our Houston house in order to put on the market.

In April, we shipped enough of our own stuff up there & had new items delivered so that it was livable. DH continued to do repairs to the Houston house, but we kinda drew a "drop dead" date for him to move up there, permanently, in May. I went with him to manage a 2 day car trip with geriatric dogs & stayed for a week. But, most of that time was spent was getting phone/internet & trying to read scads of manuals to even know how to "work" the darned house. No pix :(

I've spent the past two months trying to finish things up so the Houston house could go on the market. I had no idea it would take me that long. I have to admit that I would look at the chaos left behind and just freeze. I've finally gotten past that & the real estate agent is coming tomorrow to get ready to list it. YAY!!!!!

The good news is that rather than retiring (I needed to work through March to get my 20 years) and finding a new job, I am going to be able to keep my job & work remotely. I'm transitioning to a new assignment which is mostly travel, e-mails and phone calls so there is no reason a can't do that from SC and just touch back with the "home base" for the occasional face-to-face. I'm not sure of the start date of the new assignment, but I hope to be in SC by the end of the summer.

I fly out to SC next Thursday for a 3 week vacation. My DD will be with us before she goes up to VA to start law school next month. It will be so nice to see DH. After 2 months, the nightly, long phone calls aren't cutting it. (sigh) I promise pix. And, I know I will have plenty of questions for the forum once I am there and try to get window coverings, etc. figured out.

Thanks for the complement. Starting with the master suite:

Master bedroom with tray ceiling (rope lighting), sitting area, and fireplace (need to change the FP trim work)

Master bath. We love the clerestory windows that bring nature indoors.

Rainforest Green marble is a big hit.

Steam shower prior to door installation.

View from master down hallway the runs past between great room & foyer, includes the mezzanine for stairs down with the art niche that is between the dining room & kitchen.

I need to scoot, but will post more, later.

Luvs, my DDIL is absolutely the best. I am so lucky Jason married her. By the way, hope your DH had a nice birthday. My oldest son turned 44 yesterday. (shaking my head over this, hard to believe). Princess Mimi, with a husband and 5 sons, I think you should be the QUEEN. Bless your heart! Thank you again, Everyone, for all the prayers and good thoughts. And the offers of "running partners", LOL. I'm sure the men with white coats and nets would love a challenge. Tho I couldn't outrun a turtle these days. DH finally felt pretty good today and hopefully the worst is over. Have you painted a large sample of Pink Ground and looked at it in different light, on the plane where it will be used? I say this because I am a big fan of FnB's (tightly edited) palette, but when I tried Pink Ground it felt very Calamine-Lotion-esque. I find that magazine photos have very limited utility for choosing colors IRL. The combination of professional lighting, and then the generations between the actual color and the print you hold in your hand (or, even more remote, see on a screen) is a tenuous link at best. I used a pink on the wood ceiling and bookcases for our girls' stonehouse/playhouse. Although it is primarily our girls playhouse, we will also use it as a bar for summer parties, maybe a guest house, etc, so we did NOT want a bubble gum or little girl pink. We tried 7 or 8 pink colors. In the end, and with much assistance from this board and BronwynsMom, IIRC, we used Gentle Butterfly. Aw, just the idea of re-opening the incision gives me the willies. I'm glad it's over for both your sakes. That was a costly lesson to learn, I bet! I didn't know they had an alarm in them. Oh boy, I sure hope I don't ever hear DH's. Was it loud? Harry's hasn't "zapped" him yet (and I pray it doesn't have to).

The window is staying. Like I said, I didn’t like the pass through originally but we have grown to like it, very useful and gives a view to the great room while in the kitchen. The wall with the window supports the loft above and the roof above that. So I’m pretty sure there would have to be a column or two. Plus the pantry in the kitchen also houses a support and the hvac stack so it has to stay. Hard to see from this pic, but part of the pantry is only about 10” deep due to mechanicals and supports running up to the roof.

Beautiful house! That marble is absolutely stunning. I've seen it before, not installed, just slabs and thought - ugh - never in a million years would I have thought it would look so beautiful installed. Looking forward to seeing more.

Quite a lovely home. The colors are so serene. I particularly love all the french doors with the wonderful views. The clerestory windows are breathtaking. Is your lot large and isolated ? What part of SC ? I just rode my bike through SC from GA to NC and was about 30 mi. from the coast the whole way. Beautiful country. c

I absolutely love it! I was just amazed at the snow in South Carolina. We drove thru last week and it was hotter there than Florida.

I couldn't help but wonder which law school in Virginia. I live about 45 minutes from the newest law School (Appalchian School of Law) in Grundy, VA and it has amazed me how people from other areas are attending school there.

The only thing more beautiful than the inside of the house is the charm on the outside. I've never seen a design quite like it and it's just great, especially from the view of someone who lives in a cookie-cutter neighborhood. I love the front entrance and barn silouette.

Jo Ann, it's so great to see some photos of the house! I haven't been on GW much since we moved in either, and I was so pleasantly surprised to see your post when I looked today. It sounds like you have been very busy. You home is stunning. I absolutely love all of your trim detail. It is amazing. We didn't put much trim detail in our house, other than the basics, and left that to phase 2 or 3... of the long term plan. Looking at your home helps me visualize how polished everything will look with all of that beautiful trim. Keep posting, and good luck with the sale of your home, and your move!

Everyone has said what I'm thinking. Wonderful. My bedroom is a similar shade of green also, "Shady Olive", with the white trim, 14' ceilings; but not as beautiful as yours.

Your home is stunning. Just gorgeous. I love the rainforest green marble. Lots of movement. We have the same marble in our foyer. Love it! The entire home looks so inviting even without furniture.

Beautiful! I also would like to know what part of SC that has the snow? I am from SC, and leaving for the beach this weekend.

Tell me about your interior doors...are they old, new, hollow, solid, wood or fiberglass?

I'm so glad you posted photos. You home is beautiful, may you have many, many years of happiness there.

....and on a practical note..may your Houston home sell quickly, and your settlement be a breeze.

The snow in the photos surprised me since I didn't realize it snowed in SC, but then I looked again and noticed that it looks like a wet snow, the kind that doesn't last long. But how nice to have snow on Christmas. Even here in the colder clime of the north (Philadelphia area) we don't have snow on Christmas all that often.

What a beautiful home!! What was the name of the tile you used in the master bathroom shower? Did you use this on the floor of the master bathroom also? How hard is it to take care of marble in the bathroom.

It sounds like you have had quite a year! Your new home is absolutely beautiful and will be a lovely place to unwind and celebrate with your DH. So many lovely touches -- the arches, coffered ceilings, woodwork, lighting and that stunning Rainforest Green counter. Yum!

I hope your sale in Houston goes well so you can fully relax and enjoy your beautiful new home. Congrats!
