How much $ should I ask for this?

It's an old iron/metal double bed that's been in my family for awhile. It's a sturdy bed, has the original paint, and as you can see from the pics, has a little dent/ding or two. The prices I'm seeing on my local Craigslist for similarly-styled beds are an average of $125, without mattress (I don't have the mattress for this one either). I'm thinking of advertising it on my company's electronic bulletin board before resorting to CL, but I really don't know quite what to ask. Would $100 be out of line? Should I go lower than that?

I think it depends on your area. But I wouldn't personally pay $100 for it. There are nicer frames on our local CL for a lot less.

Yeah ... I think $100 is too much. I just found this one on my CL that's much nicer than mine!

In other words, does each not occupy the same space when each is stuffed into a cubic foot container ? No. But your wording is a little tricky when you use the word "stuffed." If you poured it in and tamped lightly, still No. 1 cu ft = 7.48 gallons. 1 cu ft = 6.43 DRY gallons. For a simple experiment, take a 5 gallon bucket and a 1 gallon bucket. Use the 1 gallon bucket and fill up the 5 gallon bucket with peat moss, promix, whatever, until full. You should have used 5 gallons. Then wet it down every couple hours, just to make sure it's wet but not enough to "add" any height. If you do this enough, the air will escape and the peat moss will settle. You can even drill a tiny hole for the water to drain out if you'd like but no peat moss. Now, your 5 gallon bucket, settled about 2 inches from the top--does it have 5 gallons of peat moss in it? If you answer yes on a technicality that you did indeed put 5 gallons of peat moss in it, then the 5 gallon bucket...is it 5 gallons or more than 5 gallons if it's no longer full? You're the math wiz, not me, so how much more wet peat moss will the 5 gallon bucket hold? ;-) If we used a 6.43 gallon bucket, it should need 1.05 MORE gallons of peat to top it off! 7.48 - 6.43 = 1.05.

You may have to pay to get them hauled off. They use the old refrigerant that is no longer manufactured, and SEVERELY regulated by the EPA. (So it would need retrofitting to the new refrigerant with new $$ parts if you had to do any repair to the sealed system.) Last I checked, it was over $300 per pound if you had to buy R30 for a recharge, and special certified equipment is needed to remove it from the fridge in order to legally dispose of it. City refuse departments won't haul any refrigerator off if you sit it to the curb, and they'll haul off anything around here--- but tires and fridges. Anyone who even thought about buying them would want them for free (and would need a refrigeration license to even tinker with them) if they knew all of that, and I'd expect most people would internet research a Craig's list posting first.

Depending upon what you originally paid for them, their condition, and how old they are, I think that is a reasonable price for the old ones and would go up to $1.25 for the newer skeins and colors.

If you cannot sell them once you list them on cl, consider one of the re store stores in you area. They pick up and you get a good tax deduction for your generosity.

I originally thought $100 was ok. If I really like something I'll end up buying it if it's a little more than I think it should be. However, I'm not good at price negotiating.

You could always ask for $75 or whatever and then allow room to go lower.

Jen, I think starting at $40 or $50 would be a good .. leave yourself room for negotiation though. As long as your company's bulletin board is free to advertise on, you can always lower the price if you don't get any bites at the starting price. Good luck, I hope it goes quick for you :)

Where I live, I think 40 or 50 would be ok. I agree 100 is too high.

Thanks so much! I've just posted my ad on our (yep, free!) bulletin board at work, asking $50, and will negotiate if need be.

Any sentimental value? What about incorporating the headboard and foot board into your garden? They could be used as a trellis or backdrop in a flower bed.

Oh, snap.

Natal, this is just precious! I have no idea how one would go about cutting down the footboard to make these sides, though. Hmmmmmm ... any thoughts?

Wow, when I saw that pic i thought it *was* your bedframe, for a second! Great find, natal.

And jen, am I missing something? Seems to me, just use a saw with a blade for metal and slice the footboard tube in half on either side of the middle decoration.

That is such a cool idea.

AuntJen, keep that baby and make the bench. Check with a local welder and see if they can cut it for you and then weld it into place. I'm sure there's a welder that has a small business that wouldn't charge too much. It would be great to keep it in the family. My brother had a twin like that, but I have no clue what happened too it. I'm working on a bench from a twin wood bed. If I found one like yours I'd head to a welder for sure.
If you want to do this I can help you figure out where the cuts need to go since I've done this on other beds before. Just not metal. The measurements would be the same though.

Bring it to us...we can visit and DH can happily weld away in his shop. You would have to wait until it is a bit cooler though...I don't want him to be welded to the concrete in front of the shop :^)

Jaybird, thanks so much for the offer! Alas, I sold the bed this past weekend to a coworker (for $50). I still love that bench idea, but knowing that she'll enjoy having it in her home makes me happy too.

The folks on the Garden Junk forum will know exactly how to create that bench; they do stuff like that all the time over there.

I love the bed! I recently paid $85 for something very similar here in the mountains of SW Virginia. I actually fixed it as an outdoor bed complete with a blow up mattress. I sanded and painted it black. It was much less expensive than a double chaise lounge for my huge concrete patio!

Did I mention that I love yours! Find a way to keep it before taking a measley $50 for it!
