Best bead board installation

We are renovating our pool house kitchen this spring. The walls and the back side of the kitchen island have been and are still bead board. The original bead board was tongue and groove 4 inch wide boards (the traditional type, I believe). It was horribly cracked at almost every seam (it was 18years old).

So the new bead board that has been installed is the 4'x8 sheet type. The paint is about a week old and we are noticing cracks every 4'. I'm not sure that these painters had caulked the seams - it doesn't look like it to me. I will be having them back to caulk and repaint. Can anyone tell me the proper type of caulk for this job? This is a semi heated pool house in NJ. We keep it at 55 degrees in the winter for the plumbing. We could keep it warmer if we have to, I suppose.

PL polyurethane caulk would be best, but they need to tape it off and be very careful or it will be a big mess. Otherwise they can use Big Stretch if they want something with water cleanup.

The bigger question is whether the beadboard is PVC or some sort of wood product. PVC will be indestructible... MDF may require more care.

I don't think it's PVC as it seemed like wood to me. I will tell them about the two products you've recommended. Thank you!

teambaxter, Here's the link to our knob and cup pull from Crown Point. I can't remember what the hardware looked like when it first arrived but it has pretty much darkened to a dark gray with a slight brassy sheen in spots (which is what I wanted.) I just posted a bunch of pictures of our kitchen--some of the pictures show the hardware a bit better (and more backsplash.)

Goodness! Have 2 years gone by already!? I'm popping back to say "Thanks!" to the folks on this forum and others for their help. We succeeded in completing our renovation as we had envisioned. Too bad that tnhillbilly did not reply. I'm turning the question to the creative crowd on the forum -- any good suggestions to lighten up our ceiling in an affordable way (in both $$ and time) for DIY'ers? I've read about whitewashing/painting, but sanding a ceiling just sounds neck breaking (and dirty). I'm leaning towards covering it up, esp. if the material can cover up the holes I'm thinking about cutting for installing more lights (like what tnhillbillytoo did). So far, the ceiling planks we looked at (and liked) are Armstrong planks that need to installed on joists or furring strips. What else can I use that can go over wood planks and still look decent? The dark ceiling...(we will install lighter colored floor too)

I have the same trouble with some book cases that are older. I'm afraid I have to agree that it's the nature of the beast. Beadboard is usually thinner than ship lap, which doesn't separate (as much). I've learned to chalk it up to the "look" of older pieces. I don't think you did anything incorrectly. Perhaps just installed at the wrong time? I tend to install in colder, dryer weather, so things are already contracted. I have to be careful not to install too tightly, or things will buckle. If I'm doing it wrong, shhhhhh! It's working on my floors and newer built pieces.
