My new front door-- and a question

A while back I asked for some advice for a new front door, and appreciated the generous advice I received. So I thought I'd post the results. Here's the before. Coincidentally, the day before the new door arrived, I went to open the door and the doorknob came off in my hands as I heard a loud crack.

And here's the finished project. I know it's only a door, but it makes such a difference that I almost feel like I have a new house.

One question. We need to repaint all of the trim. Would you suggest keeping the same color or changing it?

Wow. gorgeous, and perfect for the architecture. Congrats.

I like the trim. If I were to change it, I'd go with a moss green.

thanks, bpathome! Those centered door knobs have never made sense to me - ergonomically nonsensical. When the work crew was here doing the work, I got a peek at the front door opening when the old door was out, and I was able to see that the house initially had a double door. I wish I knew what it looked like. I wouldn't have gone back to a double door, but I'd love to see what was originally there. We bought the house from it's second owner, and they renovated extensively, taking the house in a more traditional, colonial direction, which we're now trying to undo. I'll be sharing more pics of the interior soon - I have lots of projects planned, and definitely want the feedback of this forum!

I had a faux finish on the interior of my door and hated it. Made the interior of the entrance dark and drab. What a difference a paint of coat made on it. I have all stained wood and hardwood. I repainted the interior of my front door just one shade lighter than the walls.

That is going to mean the wall will have to be reframed---a new door header and rough opening installed for the new door and the old rough opening closed. That means removing enough outside siding and inside sheetrock to allow for the reframing. The only way to make sure the new door and frame will not be damaged is to wait until all the siding and sheet rock work is done. The sheet rock installers should be able to install the new sheet rock so the door installers can trim it to fit the new door. If all that work cannot be done in a day---the sheet rockers only need to install and do the first mudding----you will probably need to block the opening at night---or install a consteuction door. That might be difficult to find in the size you have and will be added cost as well. Nailing a couple sheets of plywood over the opening is the usual method.

I can give you an idea of what it will look like. We replaced a white front door with a wood grain fiberglass several years ago. While I love it, and we've gotten lots of compliments on the look from the exterior, I confess to not being entirely happy with how it looks with the white trim from the inside. It's been on my "to do" list of projects to have the white trim replaced with wood stained to match the door. But then...that trim won't match the rest of the trim so...? Not sure what the answer is. You could go with a white interior and wood grain exterior. Ignore the carpet board samples and mismatched furniture - I just posted asking for advice on pulling this room together ("critique this space/help choose area rug"). ">

I love the new door, it looks wonderful. I like the trim as is but maybe a change would be nice for you. The Moss Green that Tib posted is lovely. I could totally see it on your home.

I love that color, Tibbrix, but I'm inclined to keep the existing trim color as long it works with the new look. I'm kind of relieved to hear some confirmation that it does-- it's one less decision to make.

That looks great! I'd keep the trim as it is because to me it makes the whole entrance look larger and more grand.

without seeing the house in toto ...

i think the eaves/cieling should stay brown to match the house...

but the side walls in the dark brown ... make it look cave like ...

but i dont know about the grey green...

but it did make me look to the stone work ... and wonder how playing off those grays ... would incorporate the walkway ... into the entry way ..

the green... and i understand its not much green ... would be adding another color ... instead of harmonizing.. what is there ..

if you played off the brickwork .. i think is would swallow the door with color ... as compared to the way it 'pops' now ...

Love the door and trim it's perfect as is. I do agree that the side walls dark dark paint is closing it in, that part could go lighter.

Lovely! Is that Emtek hardware? I'm not sure what the trim is, in question! Lower lighter piece? I'd try to match the door color.
