I don't want my new front door damaged!

I'm fretting about installing my new $5,000 front door that goes with a huge remodel I'm doing. I will need it installed before drywall so that means that drywallers and everyone else after them will need to go through these doors with their materials and equipment. I can see a ton of damage to the sill and maybe some nicks on the door.

So what do people do to protect?

A temporary door would be one solution. Keeping the door locked and protected with corrugated would be another choice. Your concerns are genuine.

If the door is part of a whole assembly--with sidelites, for instance--have it put in after everything else is completed.

I have removed true Pampas Grass before. It's work, but not THAT bad. Be sure to wear long sleeves and gloves. Protect as much of your skin as possible because the grass blades are very sharp and will cut you. Digging really is the fastest and most effective way to get rid of it. Sharpen your shovel! Cut around the outer edges of the clump and then use a SHARP shovel (A sharp shooter works best) or axe and start chopping the clump into sections. The roots are extremely tough at the surface, but they are easier to cut through as you get deeper into the ground. You can also try using a pruning saw. Just be warned that this is slower and will likely ruin your saw. Once you've cut it into pieces, it won't be so heavy to pull out of the hole.(If you have a helper, you might be able to just lift the whole clump out of the hole, thus saving a step. Depends on how big the clumps are, and how strong your backs are.) The residual bits are pretty simple to dig out, or you can use Round-up. I don't know what your springs look like, but I am usually so busy with planting that I would never get to a big project like this then. Besides, the weather is much more conducive to vigorous work right now. You'll thank yourself a million times if you do it this winter. Pick a bright sunny day and get to it. Good luck! All this being said, if you decide that digging it out is simply too much for you, start spraying it just as soon as it begins to put on new growth in the spring. Keep it up until the clump is gone. This may well take the better part of an entire season, especially if the clumps are old.

I'm glad to hear that the LED lights are working for you. It sounds like you have a much bigger space than we do, with only 2 more lights. I think this was perhaps our biggest mistake -- just too many of these lights. (As I mentioned, I was worried that LEDs wouldn't put out enough light). Maybe if we had only installed 4 of them, the amount of light would be ok. To reduce the number to 4 at this point would require completely re-placing the lights and rewiring. I wonder also if the increased number of lights in our smaller space is amplifying the effect of the flickering? i.e. maybe it wouldn't be noticeable if the lights were further apart? The housing and dimmer switch we have are both on the compatible list on the Cree website. All 7 of the lights are connected to the same dimmer switch. So I'm not sure what the problem is. When they are on at full power, they don't buzz or flicker. We had friends over yesterday and at full power they thought the lights looked great. (It wasn't too bright for them). Then I dimmed them and they didn't think the buzzing was too bad. They also didn't really notice much flickering. But then I started waving my arms around and they were shocked. The strobe effect when the lights were dimmed made my kitchen seem like a disco! Cbjmidwood, when you dim your lights and wave your arms around, is there any strobing?

Oh my, I remember the day when I moved into my new rental. Both the front and the backyard were full of weeds, and I also noticed that there were a lot of squirrels among these weeds. They were so annoying! I always pull the weeds by hand. I think this is the most reliable way to get rid of them. But, to get rid of the squirrels I needed help. I called the guys from wildlife removal and they took care of them immediately. Now I even have my own small garden, with lots of fresh veggies, which are always a better choice than the ones from the market.

I would leave the grey on the dormer, it references the same grey on the back of your house and you can see both sides at the same time. Because you've added white trim everywhere, I would paint both the bump-out and the front door alcove white. The alcove looks dark and with the addition of a black door, it will be even darker. White paint will brighten that area and will tie your whole house together.

Unless the jamb is the type that is "trimless" and accepts bullnose in a kerf cut, i dont see why it would need installed before rock.You can make a temporary door out of plywood, or buy a "cheap" temporary.

If you install it during remodel, they will surely damage it.

Is the new door a different size than the old door? Does there need to be reframing done to accept the new door?

It is quite easy to repair/reinstall drywall after a new door in installed. The major problem is repairing the wall treatment----which could be done last in your case.

Best scenario is to leave the old door in place during the remodel---and do not do any wall treatments. After the remodel is complete, replace the door and do whatever is necessary to the interior.

Door is a different size and it gets moved a little. Otherwise I'd just keep the old one in there. I'm going from an 8 foot wide door to a six foot wide door and moving it over about 2 feet. So the entire working area would be about 10 feet wide to the ceiling.

That is going to mean the wall will have to be reframed---a new door header and rough opening installed for the new door and the old rough opening closed. That means removing enough outside siding and inside sheetrock to allow for the reframing.

The only way to make sure the new door and frame will not be damaged is to wait until all the siding and sheet rock work is done. The sheet rock installers should be able to install the new sheet rock so the door installers can trim it to fit the new door.

If all that work cannot be done in a day---the sheet rockers only need to install and do the first mudding----you will probably need to block the opening at night---or install a consteuction door. That might be difficult to find in the size you have and will be added cost as well. Nailing a couple sheets of plywood over the opening is the usual method.
