got a sewing machine for Xmas. I spent the weekend there teaching her how to use it and we made pajama pants for her. She was thrilled and can't wait to make more things. Next time I'm downstate I said I would teach her more ways to use with her new machine. So nice to see how excited she was with the machine and even more excited and proud of herself being able to make something and see immediate results.

She's in the spring high school play, Oklahoma, and thinks she can make her own costume! Not too sure about that! I'll be in Florida and not much help to her.

How wonderful! I love to hear of young people learning to sew and finding joy in the process. A simple blouse and long skirt could look like a "prairie" dress for Oklahoma! if made from the same fabrics. She could put elastic in the skirt waist then wear a belt for an accessory. I once made a sailor suit for South Pacific without a pattern - it wasn't all that difficult; just plain wide-legged pants and then the top with the sailor collar and tie.

My daughter, 18, has been designing and making her own clothes for about four years and is always working on something new. You gave a wonderful, lasting gift to your niece when you taught her to sew.

Thank you again, everyone, for sharing your thoughts and experiences with me. I've gained a lot of perspective from your answers. My mom was here for several days and as it turns out, my in-laws will be coming tomorrow or Saturday for a couple of days, so I've been super-busy. Anyway, I called Mary's mom on Sunday and talked to her a bit and will send along the hand-me-downs back with my in-laws, who live in the same town. (They're the new baby's great-grandparents.) When I called Mary's mom, I made it easy on her by starting off with "I understand that you're going to have a new little addition to your family and I was wondering if you'd like some of M----'s baby things?!" -- so that she didn't have to go into any explanation of the situation. She said yes, they could use clothes and things and that they have plenty of the newborn to 6-month stuff, but not the older stuff. Most of my stuff is for an older baby, anyways, since my son is nearly 3, so it should be a good fit. I bought a card to include for Mary to let her know I'm thinking of her and I'll also include a chatty card for Susie along with a small cash gift. I'll send a congratulations to Mary's folks, too. I know some of the GW replies I've received indicate that Susie doesn't need to receive a gift....but I want to repeat that in my opinion, she's watching Mary be the center of attention and watching the family and everyone else spend money on Mary, so I don't want her to be left behind. The girls' mom said they aren't having any showers for Mary until after the baby is born. As I see it, there aren't too many terrible decisions that a person can make that result in parties and gift-giving for them. When's the last time anyone threw a party for someone who, for example, robbed a store or dropped out of high school or took too many drugs? Mary decided she was old enough to handle sex and its consequences and Mary's parents decided to let it happen. Mary's mom took her to the family doctor early on, but when the doctor began discussing sex, Mary's response was "Oh, GROSS! I'm not going to do THAT!" and her parents took her for her word. This pregnancy couldn't have been too much of surprise. My in-laws received a call one morning many months ago, from Mary's mom. Both the mom and dad were at work, and Mary and Susie were home and Mary's boyfriend was there. Could FIL please go check on them? My FIL went over to the house to chaperon and found Mary in pajamas and she and her boyfriend were laying on the couch. When my DH and I heard that story we looked bug-eyed at each other and we agreed it was not IF she'd become a teen mother, but HOW SOON. At the end of the phone conversation with Mary's mom, she said something like - "Yeah, we were thinking of coming down to see you guys -- maybe we can do it in August or something?" Of course I agreed, but I'm wondering if she really believes the whole family, including a newborn and all of the newborn baby gear will be driving 7 hours or if just Mary's parents will come and let a 16-year-old take sole care of the newborn while the folks are away. I'll leave it at that, and hope and pray that the baby has a bright future and long, happy life.

First of all, you can't give her the car. She's a minor and I don't think can actually own one. Certainly a person without a license can't register a car. IF you let her use the car, but keep it in your name, you're going to be liable for any and all damages she causes--if she smashes the car into a fence, or drives down the street drunk at 2:30 in the morning and side-swipes a dozen parked cars, if she runs over a toddler and kills him. She's 16--by definition, she's irresponsible, and sadly, hasn't even had any kind of good example at home to learn responsibility. What on earth makes you think there's any chance at all that she'd pay the insurance if you let her use the car? YOU will be paying the insurance. There are so many reasons NOT to give her the car--her irresponsibility, her mother's irresponsibility (who do you think will be driving your car once Mom's new car gets repo'd?), the fact that teens have a very high incidence of accidents. And frankly, this is just one person's opinion, mind you--NO TEEN should EVER be given a car. If they want to be adults, then they need to learn how adults behave and EARN the money for the car and the insurance. It's a shame that you've promised her a car, and purchased it. You're in a very difficult position here, now. No--you won't be teaching her responsibility by giving her a car--just the opposite. And who's going to keep an eye on her, making sure she uses the car appropriately? I doubt her mom is going to worry about her following the rules for teen drivers (curfews, passenger limits, etc). Just seems odd to me, that she wants this car so badly, but hasn't bothered to get a license yet? Guess she's going to be one of those drivers you see on the TV court shows every day of the week--who haven't got a license, who get a friend or family member to get them a car and register and insure it in their name, and who then go out and drive carelessly. They're generally on the court shows because they've had an accident and feel that since the car isn't in their name, they don't have to take the responsibility for the financial consequences.

Part of me says let the leaves grow in and you will probably not see the areas of concern. However if this is your long term landscaping plan then think and work strategically. Best long term practices indicate you should remove damaged or stubbed out useless limbs like shown here and in your pictures. Some like to fill holes with Dap Brand caulking. It looks better but there is some discussion as to the actual value. IMO if it can help keep water from pooling in those holes and turning it black then it would seem to be the lesser of the evils. Keep in mind it's at best a temporary measure as sooner or later the caulk will loosen and moisture will get behind it. Envision how you get the plant to stand straight and start using stakes or other types of holders to systematically AND SLOWLY start straightening its posture. Some light pruning of select branches to begin shaping the trees can begin now and take several seasons to complete (IOW don't do it all at once but do it in phases over several seasons). Secondary to your question but even more important based on what you said about the soil conditions in the container would be to pull the plant out and root prune about 1/2 to 1/3 of the ball and then replace the root bound material with more fresh mix. Matter of fact...root prune first as it's a great time to straighten the plant in the container as well. I have a hard time thinking the plants are happy being root bound. There is some anecdotal discussion on Aztec Gold being very happy after years and years of being root bound. But I think that is at most the exception to the rule. Its likely any changes made last year will not be impacting the bloom cycle until this year so I would look for this year to be your benchmark. The mature wood also has a unique bark pattern for a 16 year old plant. Kind of has a Windward side of the island look to it brought about by wet conditions. Not concerning in my mind but just an observation. For comparison purposes the plant in the DAP caulk image was around 15 years old at the time of the image

My granddaughter will be 2 this weekend. She has been absolutely crazy for the Baby Shark video and song along with millions of other toddlers this past year. Look at the numbers of views this video has gotten. It’s crazy what catches on. The yellow baby shark is on the cover. There’s also another book there with a different cover that is the same book inside but it costs $42.99 which is crazy. i also purchased a baby shark tee shirt from a young woman on Etsy. It looks like Amazon is selling the same shirt. I’ll have to go back and check the prices although the woman was so nice and accommodating about the sizing, I have no complaints if she charged more.

it is always nice to hear when someone is willing to help a young person learn something new that will help them in life.. I myself taught myself how to sew when I was young as my mother had to work and then she got sick with cancer and passed away when I was 16. we only had a peddle machine, but I learned to sew on it..and thought I was in heaven when I got an electric sewing machine.. I have made good amount of money doing crafts and selling them.. one year made Time out dolls and made more than enough to pay for all my Christmas and enough for summer vacation.. so it is a good idea to have some kind of talent to fall back on if you need to make a living ..
I think it is just great that you took the time to work with her.and how proud you must have been of her when she made her first pair of pj's

I think it is great we all sewed in my family. My older sisters were real pros.When I was in high school I got the benefit of their clothes. We had half year graduations in my high school so I got to go to 5 Sr Proms and 5 Junior proms plus other various dances and had a different dress up gown for each one.

I, too, am self taught. Spent 15 years doing local theatre costuming, so I could be a great help to her, if not in Florida.
Her Mom, my DSIL, asked me how much making the pajama pants cost to make. She was surprised that you could buy them so much cheaper than making them. I told her she could save big bucks on prom dresses tho.

~~Interestingly, there is a renewed interest in people-powered sewing as part of the general hype about "going green". Many of you know that I sew on treadle sewing machines by choice just because I think they are better quality sewing machines than most modern wonders, but I've been getting a lot of e-mails from people who want them as part of an overall life-style change toward using less energy in their daily lives.

I sewed on my mother's treadle machine when I was young. I would be interested in one now in case the power went out in the winter. I could do sewing instead of just sitting around looking at the weather.

Treadles are pretty easy to find in most parts of the country. I'd recommend a Singer if you can find one just because it's easiest to find parts like bobbins for them. On the other hand, today I'm putting the binding on a quilt that was pieced on a National Two Spool, quilted on a Japanese electric converted to treadle, and I'm now putting on the binding with a Davis Vertical Feed, so it's really most important to just find one in fairly good condition. I have many friends in Washington that use treadles, so if you are really interested e-mail me privately and I can probably connect you with someone that can help you out.
