elastic waist skirt

I love elastic waist skirts, but I am never satisfied with the way they turn out. They appear bulky around the waist. Can anybody give me some hints? How do you finish them. Do you insert the elastic or sew the elastic on and turn it down? Thanks in advance. I need to make one and would like some advice. Barb

They will look bulky because they are gathering up enough fabric to fit around your hips. That's the way they are.

If you are using a non-stretch fabric then make a casing leaving an opening at a seam. Slide the elastic into the casing (a large safety pin will help you work that around, be sure to pin one end to the opening so it doesn't get lost in the middle of the casing. Then stitch the ends of the elastic together, and let it slip completely into the casing, then stitch the opening of the casing shut.

If you are using a stretch fabric, it's quite different....we used the pin and quarter technique and then stretched the elastic to match the fabric as we did a multiple stitch zigzag onto the waist. Then we'd flip it over and stitch it again with the multiple stitch zigzag. This is based on stretch n sew techniques I learned way back and using stretch n sew patterns. It's a tad complicated to explain, but easy to execute. Because we were using stretch fabrics though, you didn't have as much bulk at the waist as the fabric stretch would help accommodate the hips.

I've gotten better results doing elastic waistbands the 2nd way. kwiksew patterns use a good technique, I learned from a boxer short pattern of theirs. I use it a lot now. Basically, cut elastic 4-5" less than natural waist. Sew it to the right side, stretching as you go. then flip it to the wrong side & stitch down. I don't like the raw edge that shows so I do an extra flip to hide. If I'm doing a casing, I make sure to sew through the side, back & front seams to secure & prevent rolling.

Annie D, I'm curious as to why a casing for wovens & sew-in for knits? It seems it'd be easier to do a sew-in for woven, less chance of the fabric stretching dif. than the elastic (if that makes sense).

The biggest reason to sew is also one of the easiest projects to succeed at: custom curtains. You can save a ton on curtains if you make them yourself, esp. if you have odd-sized windows. Pillows are also really easy; as are tote bags, scarves, and even an elastic-waist skirt. (the secret to pillows it to stop one stitch before the corner, and sew the last stitch of the side DIAGONALLY across the corner, then stitch the next side; this gives you really sharp corners when you turn it inside out. But if you aren't honestly likely to do that, then I'd seriously consider sending that sewing machine on to someone who could use it. In whatever way makes you feel comfortable--selling it so you don't feel taken advantage of; seeking out someone w/ few resources, like a college student or recent immigrant; or someone who'd value it because of it's contribution to their serious sewing equipment, like somebody who bought a serger and an embroidery machine but wishes she had a basic straight and zig-zag machine as well); or somewhere it can do some social good (like a nonprofit organization's sewing class, or the school, or a junior college, where they'd find it useful for teaching people the basic skills). . One thing about old sewing machines; the ones in the cabinet aren't as popular w/ most folks nowadays bcs you can't put them in the closet, and the older machines have very few stitches. They're workhorses, but they're basic. And most basic portable sewing machines aren't terribly expensive. So, start looking for a home for it before it gets even more obsolete. If the wedding dress has pretty fabric, it could become a christening gown (do you have siblings whose kids or grandkids might use it?), a pillow or three, or even a quilt. Martha Stewart Kids once showed how to do a quilt from a baby's outgrown clothes, and suggested KEEPING the details like the pintucks on the bodice, or the applique, or even the collar, and not just using only the plain expanses of skirt or trouser leg.

How much do you need to take it up? If you've already hemmed them, when you take it up at the waist, odds are that they will be too short. Is the problem that the crotch is too low? You may be able to raise it a bit by taking in the inseam through the crotch region....by that I mean turn the pants inside out and fold them back along the seam that runs from the inside of one leg to the inside of the other....take it in some at the center seam of the crotch and then taper to nothing as you go down each leg seam. This may help and you won't have to re-hem.

I'm thinking you could simply find a suitable leotard or swimsuit (hint: nylon takes dye beautifully) & make an elastic-waisted skirt to go over it w/ points from tulle or sheer nylon fabric? Original Disney Tink has white 'pom-pom' looking thingies on her toes (& 1 on her head, I recall).Those should be easy to make as well - I've done that w/ tulle.Here's some directions I found on the web: Fold the nylon net a couple times so it is about 18" wide, then cut off the width you want the puff to be (5" or so) - you now have a piece 72" long by 5" wide. Starting at one narrow end, run a double-thread running stitch loosely up the center until you reach the end. Pull up the thread tightly, and stitch to tie off. That's it! It's better to use quilting thread (for strength) if you have it, but not necessary. (Judy from Ontario)

Hi Angel I am also a child of the 80s. Still cringe when I see the photos from my teen years and I can't believe that some of that stuff is back in fashion! It includes quite detailed instructions on fitting and it is suggested that you make it up in gingham check fabric, the straight lines in all directions make it obvious where the problems lie and help with measuring on the body. I can't agree more that you should not bother with a handheld machine. They make a chainstitch. This come out very easily and even if you succeeded sewing a dress with one of these infernal things, there is a good chance you'd be popping the seams when you wore it! The first thing I made in dressmaking classes, many moons ago, was a straight skirt, this has darts and a zip, so is a good practice project considering the direction you want to go in. I can't stress enough the value of practicing on old sheets/ scrap fabric. Having the freedom to mess up and just use your disaster for cleaning the floor is very liberating. By not wasting good fabric, it also saves money in the long run! Best of luck, AJ

It's a matter of how the pattern is made, I would guess. If the knit fabric isn't cut large enough to fit over the hips, the elastic and the fabric will stretch together to make it work. Not so with a woven....

I've never tried to use the kwik sew technique on a woven. I suppose it could work, but it would depend on the hand of the fabric....if it's too stiff, it won't gather properly onto the elastic. I can see where it might prevent the elastic from contracting fully. If it's a soft fabric, though, I suppose it might work. The other consideration is raveling ... knits don't ravel so flipping and stitching twice works...if you're giving it a 3rd flip, you won't have the ravel problem, but you will be adding more bulk at the waist.
