What other forums do you frequent?

I am curious to know if you all check out other forums and which ones. I do look at some others but obviously, I spend serious time right here. Since I visit my inlaws several times a week, I will bring the computer to keep busy. I stay with FIL while MIL goes to the store, runs errands, just generally gets out of the house. So, I get time to post ALOT on and off on those days. (FIL has Parkinson's-fairly advanced- and cannot be left alone.)

I recently joined Michael's forum, but it's hard to keep up with stuff over there. The set up seems complicated to me. I also love the show LOST and started visiting the message boards on ABC to see what people thought the deal was with that show. Since it's still in hiatus, I haven't even visited since May. I actually never knew this stuff existed online until I stumbled onto the LOST site last fall and lurked for awhile before getting the nerve up to post. They aren't very nice to newbies!

So, do you all visit other forums? There's got to be a forum on just about everything by now, right?

I came to GW through the landscape design forum (talk about "not" a nice group) Then got hooked on the Junkyard till mosaikers migrated to this forum, so I still lokk in at the junkyard.

I visit a garden art forum for concrete artists, learning alot there! But my home page and majority of my time is spent at a discussion forum that is 90% male... I am a moderator there and we discuss current events, politics, travel... its a good group. Occasionally I'll post a mosaic for them, my game table was a big hit leading me toponder that it has male appeal... the colors? it's manly I think. lol

Guys always like games NT!!

I don't frequent many forums. Mostly they are either not interesting or too many rude people. I still check in over at the junkyard that's a nice group, too

I used to post a bit on Roses and Antique Roses - haven't been around much in the past few years though. I love the Name that Plant Forum, I think it's the best one on GW besides the FN.

Whoa, if you get a degree in industrial arts you get to acquire carpentry textbooks along the way?!? Sweet! Kim, I've always enjoyed/appreciated your contributions; given the wisdom of trial and error that was behind them, I see why they stood out. My mom got us a couple of the Reader's Digest fixit books (have to run downstairs, one of them might be the very one you have); I like the way they are encyclopedic and detailed. I know Jane Powell but not the Small Houses books (do you mean The Not So Big stuff by Susanka, or the Small House anthologies from Fine Homebuilding?) Thanks for mentioning books; I think I might start a reference book thread for this forum. Hey Casey, THANKS for taking the bait. And you are NOT a bloody genius, you are an old house DEITY for crying out loud! Would you please start your own show on youtube? Or maybe just a house tour? Even Petch house has youtube videos. Or, do you already have a project blog and everyone knows about it but me? Actually for someone with a degree in historic preservation, I am impressed with how low-key your posts come across; they read more like an old friend who's "been there" and wants to pass along lessons learned along the way, it's really very nice and encouraging. But if you ever want to browbeat me feel free; I would take it as a compliment. To be honest if I post about something I'm thinking of doing to my house, and you don't opine, I figure one of two things is going on: 1) you're not on the forum; or 2) you're politely disapproving. Most of the time I assume it's 2 because you seem to be pretty consistent around here. But I just want to say, and I hope I speak for many, that I love love love your posts, especially when I'm searching on a problem I'm trying to solve and something from you pops up! (PS I finally got around to using that general finishes gel varnish you recommended and it was fantastic, thank you; I will post photos to the woodworking forum sometime before the next census.) Oh, and I love the way you "aged" the color tones in the new pine beadboard in your kitchen; reminds me of the pine in my grandmother's kitchen. When I was really little I used to look at the gleaming pores and think it was the closest wood could get to 24K gold.

Jeannie and Mama, yes, I was poking fun, that's why I put the smileys at the end of the message. Sorry if I was ambiguous. I understand not wanting to make it into a hobby. Then again, there are plenty of things that seem to make people happy and relax, forget their troubles... for one of my neighbors, it's his garden. He just *loves* taking care of it. He also doesn't seem to like to do laundry. Me, I don't much care for gardens. Mine is not worse because I found someone I can pay that comes mow my lawn. No one has to like vacuuming, or cooking, or putting dishes in the dishwasher, or doing laundry. I don't like ironing, for example. I only do it when I have to, which is not often. But for good or bad, I like to do some things -- they relax me and seem to make people happier. I like laundry and vacuuming for example, and I also like to load/unload the dishwasher. Those are tasks that to my mind, have a beginning, an end, and it's pretty hard they'll go bad, usually you end up with less mess, more clean stuff and, unlike my job, I can point to stuff that is physical and exists in the world, other people can see them, and I can say "I ran the dishwasher" or "I did all this laundry" and it's *visible*, it's clean, it's done, everyone is happy. Maybe it's not that way for everyone -- but, for good or bad, I'm a computer geek. When I have a good day at work (it happens often enough), *no one* notices, because everything goes right. When I have a hard day at work, *everyone* notices, because they can't do their jobs if the software or hardware is malfunctioning. And, the vast majority of the times, what I am doing is software, there is *nothing* I can point to that actually exists in the world: it's all just a bunch of bits in random places inside some memory device, like a DVD, a hard drive or a solid state disk. You point to a tiny thing that holds 128 gigabytes but you can't point to the *exact* location the software is in, and there are *tons* of other things there in addition to the software or data that I put in or am responsible for. I shouldn't complain, it's a good life, on one hand it's easier than farming things or building things etc, on the other hand it's harder than herding cats, or so I'm told, I've never actually herded cats. But I hope you can understand why I'm kinda protective of my "hobbies": when I first asked if people in my home minded if I did those, *everyone* said no and backed 3 steps to make sure they were not volunteering for the tasks. I took over them, I like them, I do them very well. *Now* that some people want to share the tasks or take over them, I'm saying no. They are mine! Bwahahahah!!!! ;-) Cheers, -- Paulo.

We go out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are usually a few relatively decent restaurants that serve dinner on both of those days. Cherryfizz, I agree it's hard when families are gone on the holidays. I have many happy memories of family holidays in years' past - but all of those family members are now deceased. We don't really have any family to celebrate holidays with anymore. So we first tried eating at home by ourselves (it's just my spouse and me) - but for us, it felt even more sad to be home alone than surrounded by other people. So now we go out and eat a nice meal somewhere. It's usually a somewhat overpriced meal because most places charge a premium for meals on those 2 holidays....but we pick places that have good food anyway. Holidays can be hard. There is no right or wrong answer. For us, we're better off going out than sitting home with just the 2 of us.

Yeah, I check the junkyard and the hypertufa from time to time. LOVE to see those pics! There are fabulous ideas over there at the Garden junk site AND they are very nice!! Huperufa even gets a little snotty sometimes.

Rude people are everywhere!!

The Hypertufa forum was the first forum that I found that was of great interest to me, and I lurked there on and off for a couple of years. But I never felt comfortable posting there.

But then one day I was doing a search, and ended up on the Garden Junk side, and those people were REALLY, REALLY nice, so I started reading posts there, and discovered the Mosaics/Stained Glass, and BOOM! I found my home!! I was so impressed that I joined and posted within a day or two. I posted a few times on the Garden Junk - and really like it there, too, but I just don't have enough time to really keep up there, too (I work full time). And since my true love is mosaics...this is truly the place for me.

I also recently joined the garden art forum that NT mentioned, talk about a GREAT group of talented people - wow! I've been dabbling in concrete, and want to do more, and that is a great place for inspiration and knowledge. I haven't introduced myself or started posting there yet - but soon!!

I joined a couple of other mosaic sites, but I don't really check them out that often. Of course, you can't top the people here, AND I like the way this site works better than the other ones.

I just need more TIME to do all the things I want to do!

I pretty much stay here now - started at GJ like many others and still pop in there from time to time. They, like this group, are very nice and easy to be around. Been to a couple in the past that were AWFUL to new people or to those who had questions that "the powers that be" felt to be too elementary.

I started here a few years back heavy on the Landscape Design forum...not a very nice place. Luckily I was never personally attacked, but the few who thought they were the be-all-end-all of design were just too hard to stomach.
Other than there, this mosaic/glass forum, Cooking & Hot Topics.

LOL Linlee, I'm pretty thick skinned so I posted pics of one of my installs over at the LD forum. Bet you can guess how that went! LOL

Not well I'm sure. Though I see some of the more acidic characters have dropped off over the years.
The waters may be safer over there now.
Though I have been contacted lately by a gentleman inquiring about an arbor pix I posted, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, so I've checked in over there a bit lately.
