A Bag of 2 inch squares....

I came across a small bag of scraps, mostly Christmas print and colors which had been given to me a few years back. They were going in the trash after a school craft activity but you just know I had to rescue them. I have some wonderful colors and have started to sew them into long strips - I'm thinking patchwork table centre...or some other little "patchwork" item.....besides a table runner, I did take a few larger bits and made them into gift bags ...but I'm open to some ideas...anyone come up with any besides the potholder, tablerunner items...who has something I have not yet come across in their thinking cap. Anyone? And who but a dedicated sewer would piece together a bunch of little wee scraps...honestly do we ever learn?

Sew a bunch together,enough to make a good size piece of fabric,then pull out one of your teddy bear patterns(and i'm sure you have one ,right) and make a patchwork teddy bear.Also there's always a christmas throw or quilt.

Another thing I was doing was making a teddy bear from a pre-printed piece of fabric (bought years ago for a quarter)...which is all fake patchwork....I got it so cheap because it had been ripped in the middle over some pattern parts...you just know I repaired and replaced those patches with some of this free fabric and am now in the midst of sewing the thing together. LOL.....Bud

Have you looked in the dollar stores for drinking cups. I use small styrofoam coffee cups which have holes poked in the bottom. The cups are 2 1/2 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall. I pay $1 for 25 or 6 cents apiece. I also use the colored 16 oz plastic drinking cups for larger plants. I like both of these better than pots and they are cheaper. These are my main pots. I do also reuse the 4 and 6 packs I buy plants in and I do buy some 6 and 9 packs from my seed catalogue occasionally. They all get the bleach treatment at the end of the season I wash them in a mild bleach solution and use them again the next year but the styrofoam ones could also be crushed and put in the bottom of large planters to save on soil and still give drainage.

If you don't mind sweating a little, you can usually buy a nice playground mix of sand, and a sac of portland, and mix your own in a 5 gallon bucket using an electric drill and mortar bit. Measure how much sand it takes to fill your molds. Use a 1part cement to 2 parts or even 3 parts sand and add water (Will vary greatly on each batch) I make my own pavers and only do 6 at a time, but only mix enough cement for 3 at a time. They are about 15"x15"x21/2" and each one weights approx. 20lbs. I have a few that are 4" thick by 30" and they weigh 120lbs. Not fun to move at all. At 21/2 " and a high portland ratio, a car can drive on them once they are cured. I like making my own mix because I have control of the consistancy, I started out using a pre-mix, and it varies with brands, what size aggregate. Most importantly, you need to use the entire bag each time, as the portland may settle in the bag unevenly. I purchased the sand from a local retail by the yard at about $10 a yard. Portland is cheap also, so my pavers are costing about $1.00 including the cost of the molds($500.00) another thing to remember is that you can always add more water, but not more cement to your mix. MIght also want to think about a release agent for your forms, if you plan on reusing them again.

I'm in Monroe, James; about midway of the state on I-20. We've been in Houston off and on for the past 18 months taking my wife to MD Anderson, and I believe your humidity is generally higher than ours. IF my cuttings arrive in a few days (I had an email response to an inquiry on 1-17-2007 indicating that they should ship in three weeks) I should be able to get them rooted and in pots by early April. From there, in a short time I should be able to put them in the ground after I develop the site further. Need to raise the areas for planting a bit and recheck my drainage as we get a lot of water at times.

sinfonian: how much land do you have? 5 acres.. Is that valley yours, yes....The top of the hill in the picture is about 1/2 way on the lot.. This is a Google Sketch-up that I did of the property using the survey as the base.. or is that what is going to be developed? - Click on picture and I have marked what he wants to develop. The lots would have a nice ocean view but you can see the buildings on the lot that would make putting in a road difficult. Is your garden close to your house? No.. I have 3 ways to go from home in Paradise to the garden... 1)4 lane divided highway it is 40 km (25 mins). 2)By pass Highway and Local = 36 km (30 mins) 3)The very scenic and slow local road = 32 km (35 mins) And a picture of some Swiss Chard in the garden yesterday! I went out to the local organic farm today and was able to buy some Latah Tomato seeds. These are being very grown successfully here with our short season. So maybe next year I will actually be able to grow red tomatoes.. We have just had 2 beautiful days of weather after the hail last week! Coasters would match your runner. Alot of folks put cloves or cinnamon in the coasters for coffee or hot chocolate because the heat of the cup would sent the room.

I made Christmas stockings last year with a bunch of very small peices of homespun scraps. They turned out beautiful and everyone keeps asking for one. I just sewed a bunch of scraps together and then layed a stocking on top of it and cut it out. Did this for both sides and lined with flannel, because that's what I had. I'm sure what ever you decide will be great.

I didn't see this post when I asked what you were making. I saw a purse made of a cathedral window squares using black fabric with the bright centers rather than the white or unbleached like most people use for quilts. It was beautiful. The dark wouldn't show dirt as bad either. If you don't have the instructions for cathedral squares, let me know. I have some somewhere around here.
