CT: Finding someone to make shades from fabric
Comments (31)Annie, I know I have arrived unfashionably late to the post but I was searching roman shades and I came across your pics for your shades and I fell in love. I have a few questions if you don't mind. What does "hobbled" mean? I can see velcro-ing to a board on the top but how do you keep the folds so neat? I am looking for a stationary shade and yours is perfect for what I need. And be still my heart, are those Napoleon bees on the ribbon? I personally hate bees IRL but Napoleon bees speak to me for some silly reason - maybe I come from royalty in another life!!! So by any chance do you remember where you got the ribbon? BTW, another CT girl here, but I am in Guilford, east of New Haven. There was an old fabric store I went to with my mother each week(in the sixties so I am dating myself). It was so much fun in haggling for the remnants - I don't know who enjoyed it more, the guy or my Mom. Every time we went she sewed another dirndyl skirt (with pockets of course) for me to wear to school the next day, for about $.50 worth of fabric. Miss those days with her. I cannot believe how many of the older stores are gone. Progress I guess, but that depends on how you define progress. So Annie, I am looking forward to hearing from you. TIA....See MoreHow to find someone for small project?
Comments (3)My guess it that if you had friends, relatives and coworkers to ask for referrals, you would not be asking us how to find folks! If you can't get referrals from any of the people Gina came up with, try looking online for Yelp! If you are close enough to a large city, there may be reviews for handymen or painters or the like. I found someone to clean my gutters through Yelp! and this guy told me that he didn't think I coud put off replacing my roof another year. He had no interest in roofing and did not even suggest a roofer to call. I appreciated his input. He also did a good job on my gutter cleaning. There used to be a company called Service Magic that you could go to online to get referrals. Now it is called Home Advisor. They do have handyman services listed. I put a link below. We used them to get referrals for our roofing job. Last year I used them to get a structural engineer who was willing to take on our small job of remedying a slab floor under our living room and foyer that had experienced having the dirt wash out underneath. The rest of the house was on a basement and was in fine shape, but we needed a plan for replacing the slab floor so that if the dirt continued to disappear, our room would not sink again. We found a young guy who did private work on weekends and evenings and he worked with our contractor and the city to draw up plans for us. This fall's roofing project ended well, too, with several companies with good ratings coming out to bid on our project. Comments (25)teeweeone: I think you're being rude. > Pretending to be a step parent is not the same as BEING one. Rosie: I am not married to my partner. Yet I wipe my SS's behind when he poops, all my paycheck goes to the family, I spend *at least* half the time I'm not at work with the boy, I help him make cards for his BD, I'm teaching him to read, etc ad nauseum. If I'm not a step parent, I'm either doing a very good impression or insane. Possibly both. True, my legal status is somewhat hazy. However, the BD hasn't seen his kid in 20 months, hasn't lived with him in 2 years -- since he was 19 months old -- calls once or twice a month. I've been here, constantly and consistently for 2 years. In the boy's eyes, I'm *at least* a step parent, if not a dad-replacement. And as far as morals go...enh. I think I'm pretty ok. Perhaps even safe to walk the streets among the general populace. :) In less flip terms, I think that I'm raising my child -- yes, *my child* -- in a way that he'll turn out nice, think helping other people is a good thing to do, and thinking that cleaning up his own messes is a spiffy way to spend an evening. Comments (16)Marcolo, Kennebec came in lower. Jeff was also very happy to give us options for getting the price down. I have been really impressed with them thus far. We're still waiting for a few final numbers to see exactly what our budget is for cabinets, but right now they're my first choice. Also, and I want to preface this by saying I have no idea who this person is and I was skeptical because they left no way for me to contact them... But... I received this about a month ago in response to an old thread where I asked if anyone on GW used Jewett... "Notes by kermit54: ------------------------------- Unfortunatly I did and what a nightmare...Go elsewhere and run fast...." Take that for what it is, I guess. But someone out there isn't happy. I just wish they'd have let me contact them to say exactly why... Jscout: What's this about Country Craftsmen doing three inch increments? I thought they were a custom shop?...See Moresheesh
