bluekit - what about this one at aspen rug company? there is a thread about 'somethings gotta give house' and this was the rug featured in the movie. i don't know prices but it seems like it would fit well in the room.

I am shopping for a rug too as I type this! I know absolutely nothing about rugs (am trying to educate myself) but it seems like overstock has some great rugs at awesome prices. Not sure what size you need, but here are a few I found:

Laurensmom, how are you able to show pix from overstock? I'm trying to copy pix without any luck. I have about 12 rugs in my cart there and 2 in homedecorators that look promising but I'm just not sure.

I just figured it out actually :) Right click on the pic on overstock and go down to 'properties' and it will show the url adress for their pic. Copy this address into the html code on the link below using "add a picture" (copy over everything within the quotes, but leaving the quotes)

Out of curiosity, have you looked at the construction of these rugs?

You mention it is for a family room and you want it to be soft.

The rugs you have listed are not "kid friendly" in terms of softness or durability.

Two of the rugs posted from Overstock are tufted. There's a huge odor problem attributed to the latex glue used in many tufted rugs. The description only says "imported" and not where from.

The others are hooked and petit point--which is a very pretty look, but not best suited for a lot of use.

What about going to a carpet store and having a carpet bound. There are some nice textured carpets out there. Then you can order the exact size you want.

I freely admit to knowing nothing about rugs. I've had cotton dhurries (flat woven), which I think is borderline for comfort, and some sort of jute/sisal, which won't work at all IMO. However, what's wrong with tufted? What's wrong with latex glue? We don't have allergies and we leave windows open whenever possible, which would help if outgassing were an issue. What's wrong with imported-from-unknown-place? I presume that everything is imported from China, which one might wish to avoid for political/social/ethical issues (and I'm not going to start that discussion here), but speaking as a consumer it's very hard to avoid buying Chinese-made goods in the mass market.

Out of the ones you posted, I like #1 #2 or #7 the best. I too know nothing about rugs and was also looking at some tufted ones. I'm also wondering what's wrong with these kind for kids? Are they harder to clean? What kind of rugs are kid friendly, other than cotton? Sorry to hijack! :)

I like like the same ones Lauren picked out, though keep in mind with the ivory background it will show the dirt if you have little ones there. I find that a darker, busier pattern tends to mask the dirt more. If you are looking for an inexpensive rug, try looking at either Tuesday Morning or Home Decorators. Another place ould be Pier One imports. My family room rug, believe it or not I bought for $60 at Big Lots and is holding up reasoably well since it was a "temporary" solution. Advantage of purchasing in a store is you can see it in person as the colors/pattern are not always accurate on a computer monitor and it is not trivial to return a rug. It you do decide to order over the internet, I'd suggest you buy the smallest rug in the pattern you like to check out the pattern IRL in case you have to return, the shipping charges will be much less.

Regarding Lauren's questions, some find that glue adhesive backing of tufted rugs to give an odor so be sure to smell any rug before you buy. For cleaning and durability, wood really is the best.

bluekit, I like the white and blue plaid the best of the rugs you posted. Well, actually, I really like the chicken rug too, but it is a bit out of the specifics you named. Of course, I'm the mean mom who buys what she likes and tells the kids to get over it! ;)

Lauren, I like the burgundy caroline herrera rug for your house better than the cobalt, unless you're going to bring red into the LR in other ways like throw pillows or you're keeping your couch without a slipcover. I also like the most expensive one you listed (of course I would) for your dining room area.

I suggest that both of you look at HD or Low*es and see what selection they have that would work. I've seen styles very similar to the ones that Lauren listed at HD. Unfortunately, I've never seen a rug like the blue plaid one, or it would probably be in my house already! :)

Really like 1,2, 7. I have seen the chicken rug on Overstock and love it. I know what you mean about it being cutesy, yet it is so appealing.
I like the simplicity of the other 3, but they have enough detail to be interesting and fun. Rugs are hard to choose, there are so many.

I can easily spend hours looking at rugs, second only to wallpaper and fabric.

Lissa - thanks again for the info. The rugs I posted were suggestions for bluekit (of course I haven't narrowed down any for myself yet, procrastinating helping others rather than actually decide something for myself -LOL!) But I do really like the most expensive one I posted too. But I think for myself I'm going to stick to spice/sage/mustard colors (or maybe brown, I really like a lot of brown too!) See what I mean about being indecisive - LOL! There's just too darn many gorgeous rugs out there to choose from!

Have you looked at Company C rugs? You might be able to find a compromise on one of their lovely rugs. But remember: It's your house, so you get final say. :)

Latex glue can be extremely smelly. Tufted rugs will always have latex glue applied to the backs.

It won't help or solve the problem with latex odor.

What's wrong with imported-from-unknown-place?

India seems to produce rugs with the worst latex odor. Knowing where it is imported from could give you a heads up as to whether or not you are purchasing this type.

Wasn't tyring to cause a ruckus, only point out a few of the known issues.
