Looking for Feedback on the different Varieties of Jackfruit
Comments (12)Jakfruit, like all other fruits, vary considerably in flavor and texture as well as aroma and latex content. In the mid-90's Fairchild was involved in a breeding program and there was a Just Jakfruit Festival that was held where one could try the various types and purchase seedlings from their nursery stock of cross bred seedlings. To my knowledge, there has not been any substantial follow up by Campbell and the other folks at Fairchild to see how the breeding program did.....by checking with the people that bought the trees, grew them out and fruited them. I wish they would follow up on that program and do some publishing about their findings. Any way, I digress. I have tasted most of the varieties that have been around for any length of time. Conspicuous in their absence from my list of "having been tasted" are Bangkok Lemon, Ziman Pink, Mai 2, Mai 3 and Borneo Red. I have had Cochin, NS1, Tabouey, Black Gold, Golden Nuggett, Golden Pillow, Cheena, Dang Rasimi, J-30, J-31, Honey Gold, Rien Baht and some seedlings that I have grown including one which I believe is an NS1 seedling. I call it Orange Crisp. And two from the Fairchild breeding program including a Tabouey x J-30 cross and a Black Gold x Tabouey cross. At the Festival, too many people and fruit having to be prepared for the throngs well in advance, and perhaps even frozen and then thawed, limits the tasting of the various fruits at their fresh flavored best. It is also very difficult to remember the variation of flavors one might have encountered years before especially when you are trying to compare with a fruit that you are currently tasting. In my mind, the two best jakfruits that I have had thus far, notwithstanding the above mentioned limitations are my seedling Black Gold x Tabouey and Cochin. Cochin is a very small fruited cultivar with fruits about the size of a commercial pineapple. Unfortunately, the trees are not very vigorous. In fact they often fruit themselves to death from what I hear. My Black Gold x Tabouey cross is very hardy and seems very cold tolerant.....relative ot other jakfruits I am growing. Mai 1 is in the next tier of fruits....not far behind with J-30 and J-31 getting good flavor reviews but with more latex to deal with in fruit cleaning. Mai 1 gets additional points for its low level of latex. My favorites, mentioned above, are not heavy latex producers either. I definitely prefer a firm fleshed culitvar. Some of the softer fleshed varieties have great flavor but are tough to swallow given their mushy texture. Most of the cultivars that have been selected and mentioned in the Fairchild articles are nicely flavored. So.....maybe if we all contact Fairchild and request another Just Jakfruit Festival, you can get an uo close and personal review of the various jakfruits out there. Warning......jakfruit cleaning is not for everyone. Frankly, it is generally a royal pain in the a$$. What I usually like to do is get a "jakfruit cleaning bee" going where I get a small group together to do the tedious job of cleaning. Then you split up the cleaned flesh and everyone goes away happy, if not more sticky from all the latex. Harry...See MorePer Request: Rosemary Cottage photos - Pic Heavy
Comments (72)NewDawn: Thanks -- the oil paintings are my favorites here too (apart from the DH and the cats .....well ..... maybe the cats ..... Just teasing! And adjust them as needs come up .....THEN I change my mind .... and end up switching them around in the house. ((add glass of wine ....)) I keep my own hammer and supplies in a handy drawer in the kitchen ..... I'd LOVE to help you out! Jan...See MoreLong adobe galley - layout feedback (Part 2)
Comments (22)Thank you all for your very insightful comments. Davidro We are reframing the entire area, so the pantry framing is completely up to us. Our approved plans do show a pantry but my GC says that as long as I figure it out by next week when we do the framing, we have some flexibility. The vent pipes and the electrical is the same.. all will depend on what we end up doing. Only limitation on electrical is that there will be no cans. Our ceiling is low and has wood planks and beams that we plan to keep. We are adding 2 new skylights (see the X near the clean-up sink and the cooktops). I am thinking something similar to this GW classic Spanish kitchen with school house flush mounts, pendants over sink s and a modest pendant over the banquette area The question of Pantry --> I added the pantry to the plan to see if we can reduce the cost of cabinetry and add some long-term grocery/ appliance storage. The original idea was to basically make this back to back cabinets. The galley kitchen would then end in a "L" here with the short leg facing the kitchen and another set of cabinets facing the corridor (for other household storage). The side facing the kitchen could have the fridge and the ovens (an appliance wall?). We gave up on that as the pantry seemed more optimal but the discussion now about choppy counters makes me rethink that. I love Dean1's neo-angle pantry as well (in fact pinged him a couple of times to ask to see the inside). The only thing on the oven is that I do want it to be ergonomically a good height for me. I am 5' tall and wanted the 27" gagg convection mounted lower and the 24" gagg combi mounted above so that I can peek into the combi at the eye-level. So it would be a deepish drawer with the ovens above and some storage above. Pllog --> I completely agree on the prep sink position. I am not happy. I thought about moving it after the cooktop area across the fridge. That may work as the filtered water will be at the prep sink but was concerned about people dropping clean-up things in the prep sink. That would be a big ick factor for me. The nice thing about this sink is that it has a built in cutting board that sits flush with the counter.. so the extending the countertop idea works. I actually did this based on feedback from you and Davidro in the appliance forum thread a while ago. Bmorepanic Thank you so much for the reality check on the pantry. I need to mock up the pantry layout physically per your email and see how it works.. I realized I am more visual/ kinesthetic than verbal as part of my remodeling education Here are the full house layout (sorry for the small size fonts.. Only way I could make it fit ). As you can see, the house kind of wraps around the patio/courtyard behind the kitchen with doors from the kitchen, family room and the master. Picture of the current kitchen with the ceiling plants and beam standing from where the pantry is shown in the plan.(pardon the crappy cellphone photo. There adobe brick wall you see at the end near the french door will be modified to add a window with a seat for the banquette. All that brick you see currently jutting into the aisle is gone. The courtyard showing the French doors and the dutch door from the kitchen and the French doors from the family room....See MoreFloor plan - Suggestions wanted before finalizing plans
Comments (34)The circulation was what bothered me the most in the original plan. Oh, and those skewed closets by the mud, kind of like just to have skewed lines. The kitchen did not have enough counter space, kitchen was looking to small for this house. All I did was fine tuning what you already had. I see not need of 2 stairs that close to each other. There are options that I can suggest but that means to change the footprint, while this was traced above your plan, to scale. I see no problem with the master entry off the dining room. The master bath could be lay out in a different way as there is enough room. I squared off the master bath corner as the shape you had only will complicate the roof and make it more expensive. Having a refrigerator side view from the great room is not that nice but if you prefer to have the refrigerator next to the small pantry, it is ok. You may not need a bulkhead between kitchen and great room. The change of ceiling and height may be enough but the way the columns are placed, you can have a think bulkhead. Without columns, you can have arches similar to the ones in your pics. I did not detail a few things, like windows or some exterior doors.. Hope this helps....See MoreUser
