Shades with day/night privacy but view preserved - fantasy?!?
Comments (18)Thank you to everyone for all of your ideas, insights, sharing your own personal experiences and to sbp59 for sharing photos of your own shades. After exploring all the options, I do not believe a shade exists that would provide day view and night privacy and fit my other constraints (e.g., style, price). I plan to either use my back-up option of TDBU light filtering honeycomb or shell out the bucks for a Silhouette type product (depending on how many bucks are involved). If I go with the latter, I will probably opt for a brand less expensive than Hunter Douglas, such as Levelor. I really do appreciate everyone's help here. I may not have found my fantasy shade, but you all have definitely helped speed up my decision process. Had I not come here for advice, I'd probably be hemming and hawing over this for months! As it stands, I expect to make a decision once I've had both options priced out, so hopefully within a week. Thank you all again!!!...See MoreSliding glass door coverings with day and night privacy?
Comments (7)I think the luminettes may be a good solution. Why don't you look at them. There are usually window people around who will work with you in a "free shop at home" environment so you can try them in your room during the day and see if they work for you. In my experience, seeing into a room from outside during the day is difficult as that's the way the light is going and often there are reflections from the glass. So you might want to look in from outside at different times of day to see how much exposure you have. Another alternative, which you mentioned, is a window film. They have films that have gradations of privacy so you can determine at which height the window is obscured so you can get privacy lower down and light and view up above. You could try something similar by using sheers on the bottom half of the window and exposure up above. But these looks tend to be less contemporary. You'd have to be creative about how to mount it to the window so it didn't interfere with the functioning of the doors. Comments (15)A home is easiest to see in when the inside light is greater than the outside. During the day one does not SEE the inside of homes like one does when driving at night and curtains have not been drawn. I am wondering if there is a way to light up the outside of the house with spots that would be bright enough no one could see in? My first reaction to outside shades was also "armed encampment". I can't help but wonder if those in Europe with them, if they are hold overs from bomb raid/black out times. Probably not--but that is what came to mind first. There are windows one can buy with internal shades or some gas that when turned on turns into an opaque barrier. Crazy expensive, no doubt. Good luck, it sounds like you and DH will need to find a compromise....See MoreRoller shade for patio door
