craft show this weekend

Doing a bigger craft show this weekend, in Orangeburg Sc, at the fairgrounds.........Hope it will be better than the last couple I did......

Especially since it's gonna be COLD, & the building isn't heated, so if ti's not busy, it's gonna be a LOOOONNNNGGG couple of days--10-8 friday, 9-5 saturday....

Hope to see some new stuff!

It was freezing cold on friday....I left 2 hrs early. I've never left a show early, but there were no customers in OUR building because we had no heat. the attached building did, but we were at the opposite side of the unheated building & they gave up before they made it to us......

Saturday was a bit better temp wise, & people wise, but they weren't buyng alot. I made almost as much as last year, & given the way shows have been going, that's good, BUT still overall almost not worth it.

The vacuum freshners did well, sold over Â½ of what I took.

I think I have decided that next year I'm going to try & get into the Christmas made in the south show in December, & just do that, not the smaller shows.......IF I can get into the show........then I would only set up once as opposed to several smaller shows.....

Don't know, gotta think about continueing doing shows.....now that I've done this show, I have finally recouped all the fees I have put out, but not made hardly anything above that.......which is sad....

Good thing the web site is doing okay, as is ebay, otherwise it would be looking pretty empty at the bank......

I'll see what I can do - my biggest concern is space! I have so much stuff to take! I have 23 fairy houses, 25 or so fairy gardens in enamel pans and granite roasters, along with these bugs, some wreaths and a bunch of little stuff, not to mention a bed bench, and a garden chair! Oh - also about 15 pr. of planted shoes and lots of pans and various containers full of hens & chicks. I'm not even sure how I'm going to get it all there!! I will take some pictures of my space after I get set up. This is all new to me, so I'm rather anxious. At least it is close to me and I can set up all day Fri. so if I have to make more than one trip, I can. I had thought with the shepherd's hooks, I could stick them here and there where there is space, rather than having a large chunk of space for the bugs. I only have 9 of them. I decided to go $8 on the little ones, $10 on the med. ones and $12 on the two big ones. I love the idea of branches in a pot, but that would be another large item to haul. All of my items are things that cannot be stacked - they have to be in the car in one layer. Oh - as a side note - my Mom was having a garage sale last weekend, so I took my bed benches just in case - thought maybe I wouldn't have to take them this weekend to the show. Well, I did sell one (only had 2) for $50 so I was happy about that. I had tried them at my garage sale last summer for $75 each. Pricing is the worst part for me. I like getting opinions from all of you. I'm still in a quandry about how to price the fairy houses. Thanks for the comments and the help (reassurance)! Arlene Arlene

Fabric Backed Clear Class Plates

As far as the class I took on the subject directed: -clean the back of the plate -coat the fabric circle (about 1/2 to 1 inch greater than the plate diameter) with Mod Podge (matt or glossy) -smooth over the back of the plate, no air bubbles -dry, razor off the edge excess fabric, sand the back with very fine sand paper (the foam type) and the edges with an emory board- edges need attention so they don't stick out (will cause a separation if the edge gets knocked) -spread another coat of Mod Podge, let dry, repeat sanding -spread a third coat of water-thinned Mod podge, let dry, repeat sanding -spray with a non-yellowing acrylic spray, then with another, similar product (the first is a craft spray, the second sold in paint stores with spray paint. I've been told the "porcelain spray" works better, doesn't end up so sticky, so I am going to try that. The back ends up with a hard, shiney coat that is said to be durable, hand washable. They are beautiful with Asian fabrics, but it is hard to find the glass platter "blanks" at times. Takes a bit of "elbow grease", and sometimes you end up with a bubble you can't fix. Black fabrics end up looking a bit grey, due to the "glue" layer, but sometimes that acutally looks pretty good. I have enjoyed making them, now want to experiment with other surfaces and the porcelain spray.

CONGRATULATIONS from a full timer! Four figure shows are nice, aren't they? We finished our major show schedule this past weekend just outside of Boston and now have two smaller shows left and then it's in front of the woodstove until late January when shows start again. It sounds like a small shawl. Take a tape measure and wrap it around your neck and position it as you saw the other one was to be worn. When you have it where you want it, check the measurement. Cast on enough stitches to equal that. Knit a row, next row decrease one near each end. Never do a decrease or increase on the first stitch of any row, always do it one or two stitches in from the end. Alternate rows until it comes to a point with one or two stitches left. You will have to experiment a bit, and I would do it with a similar weight yarn, but not the eyelash to start with, as it doesn't work well to tear out. You might have to decrease an extra stitch or two in the decrease rows. Tami

Craft shows around here have been lousy, too. However, we opened up a little shop in a near-by flea market (an upper-class one, not a "junky" one) and we pay $60 a month rent for our shop, which is actually set up like a little store inside the big flea market. Electricity, shelving, etc. are all included in the rental. This shop is doing great in its' "fixed" location. I wish we had done this sooner instead of messing with craft shows- it is much more comfortable (and profitable)!
