A funny story here. My daughter is a competitive gymnast and a pretty good one I might say :-) In the past she's used lanolin on the rips on her hands she gets from doing bars. I told her that Udder Balm would be a very good cheaper replacement. She looked at me like I was nuts and told me her coach recommended Hand E Balm. My wife did some research and found out some dad years ago didn't like the idea of his little gymnast using a product for cows and took it to a chemist. The chemist identified the non FDA approved ingredients, removed them and they made Hand E Balm. My daughter won't touch my "cow butter" as she calls it, but has no problem using a $3.00 a 2 oz. tube of her gymnast balm. I jut shake my head and laugh it off. I think it's 100% peer pressure. If her teammates found out, it wouldn't be pretty. randy

I hate Blistex and Chapstick and Burt's Bees and every other lipbalm I've ever tried. The only thing that works for me is Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Butter (Dark Chocolate & Peppermint flavor). It tastes great, looks amazing (people always think I'm wearing lipstick, even though it's clear), and works beautifully. If my lips are in the state you describe, all I have to do is put some on before bed, and when I wake up, my lips are perfectly moisturized. I love it to the point that I buy 10-15 of them when I see them; out here, very few stores have it, but I can sometimes find it at Walgreen's. In the Midwest, Meijer's usually has it. I also have lemon balm in my garden. In looking up the uses, I found the WebMD site which gives a good overview as well as uses and possible side-effects and interactions. The article includes lemon balm as used in teas, extracts, oils, creams, fresh leaves, etc. Stop using lemon balm two weeks prior to surgery as it might cause too much drowsiness if combined with medications used during and after surgery. Caution should be used if taking with medications that also cause sleepiness, such as clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien) and others. The combination might cause too much sleepiness. I don't have any health conditions or take any medications that would contraindicate its usage, but I will, as in all herbals, use it in moderation. The scent in my garden is wonderfully fragrant. I enjoy it added to tea, but I actually prefer regular mint. Do be careful to plant it only where you really, really want it, as it will spread.
