Help with Lotion

I made my first lotions this weekend and they turned out pretty good except I am dissatisfied with the scents-It's like they disappear or something. I'm using the recommended amounts, putting them in after the stuff cools down. Anyone have a clue what is causing this or how you can enhance the smell? Thanks.

I don't make my lotions, I use a ready-made base. However, with most of my fragrances I find that I have to add more than the recommended amount. I have also found that they will smell stronger after they have sat for a few days. If they still don't smell good enough for you, go ahead and try adding in more fragrance a little at a time.

You should try making the lotions, it is soooo much fun-really a cool thing. In just a few minutes you have clear oil and water mixes that turn into thick white cream-really cool, made my own mixture up, thought I had ruined it at first it was watery, when it cooled down it is the neatest stuff. I also made my first sugar scrub, loved the way it made my skin feel. Can you tell I'm excited about this new hobby? My friends say I'm more excited about the lotion than making soap--I think they're right! I'm still debating about ordering from SweetCakes- I ordered the Vanilla Bean Noel knockoff and the Angel knockoff from MMS and was slightly disappointed in them. Don't think they're very true. Trying to spread my hobby dollars around though!

Hi, I did see your post been looking throu my empty bottles trying to figure out what size I have used, when this started years ago I beleive they only sold one size so it was simple, I would do as you said size relative to each other, just make sure you get the vitamin e cream and not lotion, also when my dil tried it, it set her hands on fire, seems she has some type of reaction to petroleum jelly that I didnt know about. in the summer I like to use the sunless taning lotion and have to use lotion frist, so I mixed some with the lotion makes it alot eaiser to apply. chartrbee2, on melting them to use as oils..... what would be the harm to try one? they melt with the heat of your hands so whats so diff about in a warmer. the only thing I see is leaving it melted (hot) for long periods of might diminish the smell ( being that when I make them the mix is removed from the heat before I add essential oils for smell because excessive heat makes the essential oil "break down" or evaporate in a sense).... I love the bars and use them daily. they are a GREAT seller for us as well. My Dad and I keep bees so I am fortunate to have as much beeswax as I could possibly EVER need. good luck with testing out the melting use, let me know i do have friends that also are massage therapists ( could be a new avenue for my bars!) LOL

I don't make these but this is a start for you. What you need is a lye calculator. These can be found on the web, either free or purchased; I have a purchased one, try "MountainSage". There (or anywhere else that has a lye calculator) you can put in which ever butter you'd like to use. It's personal preference really. You'll may need a mentor, till you get the hang of superfatting etc. Coconut and Shea butters are common favourites for those who make these bars.

To paraphrase Chucke, If it came out of the far side of a worm it is edible. Or something like that. I think studies have shown the bathroom door handle many grab to leave the bathroom and the water faucet handle one turns off after washing contains more germs than the inside of the inside of the toilet bowl that is frequently rinsed with cold, fresh water. Human bodies are designed to fight germs. If there are no germs to fight the body finds something to fight even if there is only itself to fight against. Doctors have helped some people by giving them capsules of microbes in waste of healthy individuals to replace what has been lost due to antibiotics. "pathogens in the blown mucus" are not a concern in the worm bin. They, if any, would be quickly over run by a bevy of mystery organisms, some better, maybe even some worse. Having unvacinated children who have spent time in the non tourist, i.e. way non sterile areas, living as part of indigenous families in a few cities in each of the countries of Japan, China, India, Turkey, the country of South Africa and even Disney Land, where we were banking on chicken pox but failed. I would feel comfortable with the the mucus of these tissues in my bin. The dioxide bleached fibers? Runs away in horror. But then again. Once a worm eats the bleached fibers ... I'll maybe run slower.

I am not sure why I never tried making my own, I guess because I never had all the ingredients required. Do you think it is cheaper to make your own or buy a ready made base, or are the costs about the same? What ingredients did your recipe require? Now you have my curiousity up. LOL.

I debated buying a base but wanted to experiment. I have developed a calculator and my first three batches ranged from 19 to 44 cents an ounce, but I am using some pretty exotic oils such as Red Raspberry Seed which is the most expensive at 5.50 for 2 ozs. I splurged and bought scales, jars, fragrances 9 different oils/butters, etc so I guess in reality the first one cost about $350 the rest have been cheap, LOL. I bought my stuff from Majestic Mountain Sage, they have quite a few recipes and have been fantastic about answering my questions quickly. The first recipe I made was the Coffee Butter Latte cream and the coffee butter was also pretty expensive. for the sugar scrub I used the sunflower oil which is cheap, 16 ozs for $3. I also made a lotion which is their class recipe (not on the website) Then the third batch of lotion I made up myself using my calculator (it gives recommended ranges for ingredients etc) and it came out wonderful (if I could just get it smellier). I feel like a mad scientist, now I just need a lab!

I bought my stuff from Majestic Mountain Sage, they have quite a few recipes and have been fantastic about answering my questions quickly.
