Label 'wraps' for soap bars...help please!

I have decided to make soap for gifts. I was given some bars once that had about a two inch wide heavy paper label that wrapped around the middle of the bar and then the ends folded one over the other. An inch or so of each end was uncovered. The "glue" that was used felt like the re-stick it kind like post-it notes use. The labels were almost torn looking along the edge. Their printing was very nice too. I would love to be able to come up with something professional looking like they did so if I had time I could sell the soap too.

I don't know exactly HOW they were done, but my guess is that it's similar to the candy bar wrappers they talk aboout in the craft forum.

As to the torn edges, it may be a type of paper cutting scissor or they may have used a natural paper & really torn the edge.

Remember if you are ging to sell your soap it should be labeled with the ingredients.
(If it's hand made from lye/oils it's NOT required that it be labeled, but it lets your customers know you are concerned about them. If it's melt & pour glycerin soap, it DOES have to be labeled, because by FDA guidelines that is NOT a true "soap" since it is made of multiple artificial ingredients)

Thank you for the information. I'll check out the candybar wrappers in the craft forum.

I had no idea you had to list the ingredients with the melt and pour soaps. They aren't what I'm interested in anyway but still it's nice to know. You can climb on a soapbox with me anytime!

Sodium citrate/citric acid (same thing) is in practically every liquid detergent I've researched. Yet I know that precipitates and hard water did NOT cause my towels to feel stiff and harsh. I got this stiff result after ONE wash (so, no "buildup" possible) with a liquid detergent (Kirkland Free & Clear) that by itself, or with hard water minerals, feels soft even when not rinsed out of the fabric. 1) I used exactly the same detergent and the same hard water in my TL; towels came out soft. 2) My experiments have proven that hard water alone, or hard water plus liquid detergents, even when completely left in the fabric and allowed to dry, do not leave the fabric feeling stiff Now, powder detergent (Gain, Clout) and cleaning agents (OxiClean, borax) not rinsed out DO leave fabrics feeling stiff. But this was not what caused my towels to be stiff. Fabrics with liquid detergent residue not rinsed out all feel soft. (Woolite, which contains a lot of soap, also feels slightly, well, soapy. NOT stiff or scratchy, though.) After rinsing though, SOME liquids leave fabrics feeling softer than others. The ones that leave fabrics feeling softer contain "fabric conditioners." "Fabric conditioner" is another name for "fabric softener." These work by leaving a residue behind -- a soft-feeling residue.

Moving house, packing tips & suggestions please !

Hi, I've moved a number of times (I'm an AF brat and was an AF wife as well and have moved with my career). Sounds like you're pretty organized, so you're headed in the right direction. There is nothing worse than showing up to help someone to move and having to start from scratch, packing boxes etc. On moving day I like to have everything ready to go. So...here's what I do. I make a list of everything I'll need before I move and the first few nights in the new house and I ensure those things DON'T get packed up. I then start packing those things I don't anticipate using in the near future...at least from now until I move and a couple of weeks after I move. While I'm doing this, I go through the stuff I don't want to move...the stuff I haven't used in more than a year...stuff I haven't worn in that same period of time. (You can set up your own filters for this) I set up a corner and put everything there, in boxes. I might donate it (if I'm donating, I'll make a list as it goes in the box(es) so I can keep track of it for tax purposes)...or if there is a lot and I have the time, I may have a yard sale. Then, as moving day gets closer, I pack more and more, the goal being to only have those things I absolutely need as soon as I get to the new house....linens, coffee pot, a couple of pans, minimal dishes and silverware, my computer or tablet, phone chargers....you get the idea. I can't stand not having something I need and having to look through boxes to find it as soon as I get to the new house. I also label each box....probably more than most people. I don't just say WHERE it will be going in the new house, but I tend to make a list of what is in the box so if I DO have to look for something, I can find it more easily. My goal is always to use the box to its fullest. I pack carefully, but leave the tops of boxes open until they are full. There is always some tiny thing you come across that can fit in the top of a box :) Sounds like you're getting a good start. I hope this helps. On moving day you should just have the big stuff, a room full of boxes for the moving van and then you can pack up those last minute things and put them in your car or into the back of the moving truck where they will be handy. Yes, its stressful...but you can de-stress this time by being organized and having a plan. :)

I'd use Rubber cement as your glue. It dries nearly instantly, and it's easy to use. You just dab a little on each side, allow to dry, and then stick the two together.

Instead of a torn edge effect how about a burned edge? Jagged cut the edges of your paper and then you can hold the paper edges over a heat source until they brown.

Thanks everyone! I found what I was after...cigar band labels with the "how to" set up instructions. The edges may have been made with deckle scissors. I sure am learning a bunch before I even start trying to learn to make soap.

Susan - Do you have Microsoft Publisher? I have Cigar bands set up on that and it was really easy. If you have that program I will e-mail you the file. I get five per page and I print them on natural colored paper. They have the ingredients on them also. They are easy to modify for each type of soap you have. I just use a little rubber cement to seal them around the soap.
