Show me your baseboard trim that is at least 4' high!

We are going to be redoing all of the trim in our house....currently my family room is without trim and I'm starting to get antsy to have my DH finish this project!

However, I am contributing to the problem because I am having difficulty envisioning what the trim in the catalog is going to look like in real life.

I want taller trim (at least 4") and I need it to coordinate with new trim for around the doorways. That will be wider as well (maybe up to 4"?)

Please post your pictures of your trims and molding profiles!! It would be SO helpful for me to envision it.

I'm sorry I don't have the best of photos online of our baseboard and window/door trim. Hope these help a little.

My baseboard trim is about 5-1/2 inches, and the door moulding is about 3-1/2 inches.

There was a thread on this topic some months ago--see below. There are some good photos of niches. Our project is bogged down, but I have a few additional comments since I posted... Because we have to watch our pennies, I'm shopping in bargain places. One problem I have encountered is that oddball lots of tiles often don't include bullnose pieces as well as regular field tile sizes. The niche that we have roughed in will require some cute tricks to make ordinary tile edges seem attractive and classy; we don't want to just snip tiles and leave raw edges. DH, my sweaty equity, did not finish the niche smoothly when he created it in drywall because we knew we would cover it in tile. Now, we're thinking that we might not do the tiling right away and he'll have to pull out drywall tools and make a proper corner edging around the niche. This kind of "go back and do over" gig is getting very frustrating. [Meanwhile, I've found a smashingly exciting tile that of course only comes without trim pieces. It's sitting right next to me, thinking. Unfortunately it has a decidedly unfinished raw edge and will require tricky handling if we choose to use it. I just covered it over so I can't see it tempting me there on the table. Have to be more practical. ] Tile shops do carry a metal edging that can be used to finish off edges when no bullnose is available, but I haven't seen examples of it in actual use on a range niche. Would love to see a sample photo to reassure me. Also, remember that if you choose to work with a thick tile or a remnant of some kind of rock from countertop on the back of the niche, that will cut down the depth of the niche shelf. If you want the area above range/cooktop to be an artistic focal point, I humbly suggest that you either make a niche OR some kind of tile design but not both. If you choose too fancy a niche back, the items standing within the niche will compete with the tile design for viewer's attention. Mine will be a working kitchen, so we're planning to put oil bottles, vinegar bottles, salt shaker, etc. there and they are supposed to get top billing. Are you doing new drywall where the base will go? If so, a nice modern touch is to do the tile or wood base flush with the drywall. The drywall would be run down to just above the baseboard height, and a reglet used to make a nice crisp edge. The tile or wood baseboard is then shimmed to be even with the drywall. http://www.remodelista.com/posts/remodeling-101-how-to-build-the-perfect-flush-recessed-baseboard-delson-or-sherman/ I have seen it done with same tile as the floor and it looks pretty amazing, IMO.

My brother painted this in art class in high school, and it hangs in my living room. The truck in the foreground is a '41 Chevy pickup my brother and dad restored (I had a green one my Dad had restored a couple years earlier). In the background are a '39 Ford sedan and a '37 Ford pickup that they also restored. However much the cars reflect what my brother actually had, the rest of the painting is nothing like where we grew up. I picked the frame and remain pleased with how it acts as an extension of the barn

Chloe45 - do you mind sharing your trim color and wall paint color? Just curious - because it looks great!

Here are some of my choices - any opinions? I have 9 feet ceilings, newer house just 8 years old - builder's special - so therefore nothing that special. :) The most exciting thing about the house will be the trim and the new wood floors.

The trim color is Pratt and Lambert Seed pearl mixed in BM paint.
I can't give you the wall color. It is a very old walmart color that we had matched . My husband threw the can away in one of his clean the garage frenzies.
We've tried to have it matched in Valspar and in SW. Both are close but neither is a perfect match.
I have the formula of a quart of SW if you want that.
It wasn't quite close enough to paint a patch in the middle of a wall, but I think if I painted a whole wall with it you wouldn't be able to tell the new fron the old as it turned the corner.

I like the second one because it's closest to ours, but it really depends on your home whether it would "fit" or not. Here's a profile of ours since I didn't have any close ups of the real thing. It's six and a half inches high. Our home is a Queen Anne Victorian Revival.

Here's mine its 4'5 Victorian Poplar wood. Wish I had gone bigger but I only have 8ft ceiling but it sure beats what was there. They are painted with BM Cloud White.

My baseboard is 6", but I wish it were 8".

The door casing is 4" - 5" at the base cap.

Thanks for the votes and additional pictures. Chloe45 - that is great that you got such a great color from a Walmart paint. Seriously, you never know where you will find great stuff!

Right now based on the pictures I'm seeing - I'm inclined towards the 2nd or 3rd of my choices. We are ordering online, so I do not have that many choices. Also, I am trying to keep the price reasonable because we are going to replace all of the trim in the entire house. However, given that it will be the whole house - I sure do want to like it!

I think I like the trims that I am seeing that have a little more detail.

I vote for # 2 & # 3.

Natureperson, I found a trim near by that is nice that I have a sample of and it is similar to your trim but the one I have here is 5.25" high. Since seeing your picture, I am thinking of going with this baseboard molding. I love so many of the pictures but I need to find baseboard molding that is finger joint primed pine and not the Poplar I prefer due to finances. I like the 4.25" to 4.5" best for my room but it is more expensive so I am thinking I am not used to seeing trim higher than the 3" I have on my wall now so I may end up loving the 5.25" trim.

All the rooms are gorgeous and I am beginning to think I will be happy with any new trim on my new wall.
