Thread Storage

I was looking for a way to store my 100 or so spools of thread. Googled thread storage and Wow, got a great idea!

The person said to buy, at Walmart, the clear plastic storage cases for Hot Wheels cars, at $4.88 each. I bought 2, and as she said you can store 48 large spools (with their bobbins) or more small spools in each. The 2 I bought are almost full, but hopefully now I will be able to see at a glance what thread I have so I don't keep duplicating them.

Neat idea! I have mine in pencil-sized drawer inserts, inside a plastic rolling storage cart from Office Depot. I can fit 4 of the inserts in a drawer and just pull it out to see all the colors in it. I don't think I have 100 spools, though!

I'm putting in a wine cellar in our current home construction. To be sure, this is a low priority relative to the budget such that it will be evolving over time. My goal is to insulate and not have to provide additional cooling. The placement is on the North side of the home with 2 concrete basement walls providing cool mass. The framed walls are 2"X6" with 16" centers. Initially the cellar will feature stained concrete w/ ample insulation and an exterior grade door sealing it off from the conditioned space. In the future, I envision an arched entryway leading to an arched cellar. 6 ft. tall racks lining 3/4 of the space and an island in the middle lit with task lighting for opening/tasting. I have already selected amber pendant lights for ambient lighting. Flooring may evolve to cork. I will likely have a remote thermometor/humidity sensor such that I can keep an eye on conditions. I have seen that with wine cellars the vapor barrier goes on the outside of the stud wall opposite the cellar side where the condensation would form if there were enough temperature differential and ample humidity. Having lived 5 years in Sonoma County and seen many large collections the common complaint that I've heard is that it becomes a challenge to drink your wine before it passes it's prime. Note, this depends on how large your collection is and how much you consume. At a certain size, a wine collector may want to invest in a software application to track the inventory. Long term, one of my goals for our 25 acres in the Pacific NW is to have wine grapes and a wine cave. Time will tell.

Mine has the bulk of my staples on two shelves on the uppers - Sugars, flours, oil and small stuff like salt, soda, cornstarch. upper left drawer had spatualas and mixing spoons, upper right has measureing cups and spoons (both drawers have dividers so things aren't all in a jumble). Middle left drawer has hand mixer, cookie press and some other less used items - middle right has makers, kitchen sissors, paper baking cups (cupcake type) and some other assorted stuff. lower left has larger glass mixing bowls, lower right has some small appliances but they will be moved with other cabinets get done and I'm not sure what I'll put there yet. The tall cabinet to the left has my KA mixer at counter height - there are shelves behind it where all the attachemnest reside. The upper shelf now holds my Magic Mill Assistent (Bread mixer) with the stuff that came with it on the uppper shelf. Right now I have my biggest stockpots stored below that - they may get moved too. So far- I love this set up. I'm putting bifold doors on the uppers so I can open and fold them back and have everything easily accessable when I bake. There is plenty of room to pull down a container, measure and add to bowl, and put container away. My spices are in a drawer that is right behind me at the baking center. They are also next to the cooktop. I plan on putting a small shelf on the backsplash of the baking center and putting small containers of the spices I use most often for baking on there. I only keep "on hand" quantities of things in my baking center. The speciatly flours I don't use that often and my bulk stuff is stored in the freezer. I'm also going to make some sort of recipe clip on the upper cabinet so I can have them right at eye level - I'm getting old and those bifocals make it hard to read a recipe on the counter. One new notion that is one of THE BEST ever is the new Clover wonder clips. They are perfect for bindings, purse making, strap making, and generally anything you don't want to pin. They keep things perfectly flat as opposed to the slight distortion you get especially when pinning several layers together. I just love them! And a bonus is I can sew tight spaces without bleeding from pin sticks. Here is the link to them at Amazon, read the reviews to get an idea of how wonderful these little clips really are. I saw the neatest thread storage - simple and cheap - made by Susan Cleveland at a workshop I attended that she taught. She was selling her beautiful thread. She used an inexpensive plastic rectangle deep cake server/carrier - Rubbermaid like - cut template plastic into strips - hot glued the strips into cylinders / tubes to fit the thread spools - then hot glued the tubes standing upright to the bottom of the cake server. The entire bottom was covered with these tubes, looking like a honeycomb. The thread slipped right inside the tubes. They stayed neat and clean. I was going to do that whenever I get a chance. I like to keep my thread covered. Most of it is in large ziplock bags - separated by color - kinda, sorta :) Bobbin storage drives me nuts. Here is a link that might be useful: Susan Cleveland

Would welcome a tip for storing serger thread. I've got quite a bit of it. The open racks with spindles get dusty, so I got rid of mine (too many spools anyway).
Anyone out there got good ideas for serger thread?

I can't believe it. This is exactly the same storage case I bought from Walmart. Only I paid $4.88 for it, not $11.00. LOL! Check out the link.

Kathy do you think the case, when full, would be too heavy to hang from a couple of pegboard hooks? Space is limited in my tiny sewing/computer room.

A couple of hooks to spread the weight would probably do it. I just hefted my 2 cases (full) and I think it would work okay.

Here's my thread storage system.My GF DH made it for me more than 20 years ago and it holds 228 spools of thread.

For my serger thread it's stored in those plastic drawers that you get at wal mart,target and several other stores.

Doesn't your thread get dusty? Do you have a cover for them?
I think I will invest in some of those plastic cases for serger thread. When I worked at Joann's I bought all the different colors of serger thread before we moved, so I have plenty. Probably more than I need. Stocking up is great, except when you move to a smaller home, fewer closets and no basement!

Yes i have a plastic cover for it,but i was cleaning and re-arranging the sewing room that day,so it was off.That's also why the hammer was hanging there as well,so i knew where it was,because if i laid it down in the mess i had i would have never found it.

Hi Kathi,
I use the same concept - my dad made me the most stunning racks....and they hold all of my threads...
Some poeple say tha they get dusty - I've never had a problem...it's the only kind of storage that I use - the 2 large racks on my wall...wouldn't do without them for anything.....

I also store mine in the thread racks on the wall. One rack for regular sewing thread, one for embroidery and one for serger thread. I keep clear plastic over them to protect them.

I like being able to just look up and see what I need.

If you noticed on mine i have several spools on one peg,i did that by cutting a drinking straw from the fast food places and adding it to the pegs.This allows me to stack my spools if i have more than one color.

I found a picture of mine in a magazine and gave it to my GF and she had her DH make it for my birthday.

I also like being able to see what i have at a glance.
