base cabinet corner idea...would it work?

My current corner base cabinet configuration is as follows: dishwasher, (moving to the right) followed by 15" drawer base, then 36" revolving door lazy susan at the corner, then 30" freestanding stove.

I desperately want a 24" (3 drawer) cabinet to hold cutlery at top, and pots & pans at the bottom. (That would bring the cabinets to the corner with a 3" filler.)

To right of corner, there is only a 12" space (currently occupied by lazy susan). Although I know there are other options (such as base pantry pullout and tray base) this is my question:

Could I slide a 15-inch base cabinet into that hole and have adequate support for the corner? I am envisioning the cabinet to have NO DOOR, and a full-depth shelf (which I would slide my toaster in to get it off the counter. Below that shelf I could devote about 14 inches to a slot for storing cutting boards.

Is this idea feasible? Would it be too unattractive? Thanks for your input.

Do you have a picture? I'm not sure I understand what you're asking....

First, is this a new kitchen that you're planning or is it an existing kitchen that you want to modify?

Next, are you saying you want to remove the 15" cabinet and corner susan (keeping in mind that a corner susan holds a lot) b/w the DW & corner and replace it with a 24" cabinet + 3" of filler. Then, round the corner and try to fit the 15" cabinet in the 12" space just vacated by the corner susan and then the range?

A couple of things to consider:
- On the DW side, you will need enough filler to clear the range door + handle...and I don't think 3" will be enough. You will probably need more like 4" or 5". My SIL's cabinetmaker (custom) made that mistake and now has to open her oven to be able to open the drawers around the corner...and she has a low profile oven door handle. [You need more than 12" or 15" of space in front of cabinets to open drawers...more like 20" to 22"]
  
  Do you have this now? Remember that the 12" piece of the corner susan on the side acts as filler b/w the 15" cabinet and the corner and allows the drawer(s) in the existing 15" cabinet open fully.
If you do intend to put the 15" cabinet in the space vacated by the corner susan next to the range...
- Is there anything on the other side of the range? More cabinets? Door & door trim? Something else? Nothing?
- Do you have enough room for not only the extra 3" of cabinet but also the 2" of filler or so that you'll need to clear the handles on the cabinets/drawers in the proposed new 24" cabinet around the corner?
  
  Even w/o doors on the 15" cabinet, you still need room to remove things from the cabinet w/o hitting the doors/drawer fronts and handles on the 24" cabinet.
  
  The cutting boards will probably be OK as long as you don't stuff the cabinet full b/c you can move everything over (or remove other things first) when taking out items on the end, but the toaster will be an issue if it just fits in that space. If it's a few inches narrower, then you may be able to do it...
- If this is an existing kitchen to be modified, what will you do for countertop above that extra 3" to 5" of cabinet that you're planning on adding b/w the range & existing countertop?
While it would be nice to get more work room by doing this, think carefully b/f you do it. It may work, just do a lot of measuring first!

Hi. I have the Lee Valley blind corner unit, and we love it. It was a bit pricey, but we have never regretted it. It has never had a mechanical problem, like someone else here was complaining about. Here are reasons I think you should get a blind corner unit for your space, MadamG2U: For certain spaces, it's the only way to make the most use of that area. (Like the photos for theanimala above, and your design drawings, sometimes a Lazy Susan is not suitable for the space). Sure, you could do drawers, but you're still wasting space. If you are limited in storage and space, like you seem to be, this seems like a huge reason to use a blind corner unit. While it may be somewhat expensive, so are drawers or anything else, AND I think it's such a cool feature, that when you go to sell your home, believe me, it will look like a clever thing to a potential buyer. To me it would be a sign that the seller thought carefully about the best use of space in a kitchen where space is at a premium. The units really are clever. If you organize well and stay somewhat neat, I don't believe you'll have a problem with stuff falling. I never have, and we have kids. They love this thing too. Would I rather have a bunch of drawers, or maybe even a cool Lazy Susan? Sure, but for my particular corner, and it looks like yours too, this was the best and just about only solution. Good luck.

@equest17, in that case, using the half-moon cabinet is probably your best bet. It is really nice to be able to store some bigger bulky things in those cabinets. And you can set it up so the lesser used items are in the back part of the cabinet. @writersblock that back connector on the cabinet is particle board and not the metal brace like on most of the cabinets. (At least it is on the susan cabinet, and it looks like it on the half-moon.) You could possibly connect a 1x6 to that and the front of the cabinet and use that for the drawer glide. We ended up removing the backs on all our peninsula cabinets and essentially building a little half-wall inside the cabinet so that we could install support brackets for the countertop. Doing something like that would also work.

The cabinet wasn't assembled correctly. There shouldn't be any gaps between the parts. Look at the Assembly Instructions starting at step 16. At step 23, the assembled small section of the cabinet is attached to the large section. That attachment wasn't done correctly resulting in the gaps you see in the picture. Unfortunately the cabinet was on its side in step 23 when parts no. 113434 were used to fasten the small and large portions of the cabinet together and that side is now facing the floor. I think the solution is to: Remove any screws attaching this cabinet to any adjacent cabinet. Detach the cabinet from the wall. Partially disassemble and reassemble the cabinet so it is square. Re-attach the cabinet to the wall. If the corner isn't square, use shims as needed (e.g., for the suspension rail) to square up the attachment points to prevent pulling the cabinet apart when you re-attach it. Re-attach cabinet to the adjacent cabinet.

Thanks for the input and questions...Looks like I need to get my plan refined a bit more and post the layout drawing or photo for our proposed new cabinets. It'll be easier for you to critique that way. Appreciate your time so much.
