Getting a new (to me) machine working

Hi all. I just got an inexpensive sewing machine and I can't seem to get it to pick up the bottom thread. I've never sewn before with a machine, so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I followed all the instructions and I think I did everything they said, but it's not making any stitches (because it's not picking up the bottom thread, I think). I can't even get the needle to pick up the bottom thread when I am just threading. I've had to feed it through manually. Any suggestions?

My first thought is that the bobbin is not in properly or the bobbin thread is not threaded thru correctly. I suggest you take out the bobbin case, take the thread out of the case and following your directions in the manual, reload the bobbin into the case and pull the thread thru according to the manual.

Make sure the needle is in correctly also.

HA! I laughed at that! 5;26am on Monday morning, sitting in front of the boob tube while trying to get caught up with emails---and Jury Duty in 3 hours! (I got dismissed off one jury last week because I once dated the judge....go figure...we are both old farts now, that date was last century before our kids were born). Back to the Yard Machine. I will reconnect the reverse kill wire, re fire the mower, engage the deck, then try making it go backward. WHICH--might explain why the PO gave me the unit. He used it without the deck to haul a trailer with his garbage up his driveway to the road and back. I recall he did say he never could get the unit to go backwards....

I knew when I moved into this house that the 25 year old Kenmores wouldn't last long, so I started researching then. I've read articles, reviews, and I think I've been to every store that sells appliances in a 50 mile radius. I need a top-loader due to space constraints, and I wasn't pleased with any of them. When the washer and dryer died at the end of August, I knew I had to bite the bullet and choose something, and I was going to go with the Maytag Centennial. Until I saw the LG top-loader. I looked up the reviews and they were consistently good, and they had a good repair rating by a leading consumer periodical. My budget isn't unlimited, and they were much more than I wanted to spend, but I haven't regretted it for one minute. I love them. The capacity is amazing, and the clothes come out much cleaner than any other washer I've ever owned. But you are the only one who can decide if a top or front loading machine is best for your needs. There are pros and cons to each. I strongly suggest you measure your available space, and where the necessary connections are as this may limit your choices. And then go to an appliance dealer that carries a broad range of machines and actually touch them, and look at them. Keep in mind some of the suggestions you've received here. Then go and read the reviews. It's important to see them because I found that I would find one that received okay reviews, but then when I saw it, something about it would annoy me - like the 5 settings for cold - cold, tap cold, cool cold, etc.

I'm really tempted..... I do have other machines: *The Featherweight that I take to my splinter group's Red Cross sewing & also to workshops. *The basic (zig & straight) Brother that I take in the travel trailer when we go on trips. *Then I don't really count the old Singer treadle from my mom. It is in the basement, collecting dust, & never sewed well even when I was a child. I've "thought" about getting it refurbished.... But you ARE right. A new machine that can handle FMQ (& other things) IS very, VERY tempting....

When you go to pull the bobbin thread up, are you turning the machine wheel by hand and holding the top thread? The bobbin thread will partially show as a loop on the feed plate hole and you have to pull it up the rest of the way after you turn the hand wheel towards you one full cycle around. Usually a thread ripper end or a used needle is good to use to accomplish this little task.

Thanks for the advice, all. I tried to rethread the bobbin last night. I did it about 10 times following the instructions. I tried to vary the direction of the thread the last couple of times. Wasn't sure whether the free end of the thread is what the needle is supposed to pick up or whether the bobbin is supposed to rotate or something to allow the needle to pick up thread from the bobbin directly?

I have no clue why it's not working. I'll try to re-insert the needle, too. It's not picking up the bottom thread at all, not even a little bit. I guess it could be the machine, but it's probably me. Sigh.

The bobbin rotates and the thread is pulled up from there, but try holding both the end of the bobbin thread and the top thread, before pulling up, and as Stitchintime noted, make sure you're turning the hand wheel toward you, not away from you.

Make sure that the needle is in correctly. The flat side should be facing the back.

I'm having the same problem but I have a post WWII Japanese made machine (maybe about 1950?) with a manual that is about as hard to understand as you can imagine.

Does anyone know of a website that has a manual that might be comparable? There is no brand listed on the machine other than the words "Made in Japan". Each bobbin spool that came with the machine is different than one another.

Your sewing machine may be out of time. It will not sew no matter what you do.You will need someone to repair it.

Hi, hang in there. I didn't start sewing until I was in my 40's - I'm a guy who inherited his mother's sewing machine. The first time I tried to thread the thing I spent over 2 hours on the phone to my sister (long distance) and still couldn't do it.
What worked for me was to go to a sewing shop and ask if someone would show me how to do things. The first time I felt intimidated and embarassed. But it turned out to be a good experience. I ultimately decided to take a class. Most recently they had to show me how to thread a 5 thread serger, so I remember that first threading question real well.
