Beautiful choice regarding the clock!! I'm having a hard time picturing the fireplace. Do you have a photo of it that you could post?

Love the clock! Not sure about placing it against stone, unless it is a smooth surface. Otherwise they may compete against each other.

Nothing wrong with placing the clock on a vacant wall. Again the size of the wall may determine if additional pieces or table are needed.

gastroc - I am posting pictures of the fireplace area below. Please ignore the picture on the mantel. It's just something to put there for now. The clock is larger than the picture. To help with scale, the picture there now is 15" high, and the clock is 27" in diameter. It would take up roughly 2/3 of the height above the mantel.

calirose - Yes, with the stone, I was wondering if it could work. Hmmm . . . What about on the adjacent wall? Would it look too lonely there? I don't foresee putting any furniture under it, as it wouldn't work well in the room. If the clock doesn't work on the mantel, I'm open to other ideas about what to put there.

I like the clock I showed because it has a creamy colored border, and our woodwork is a creamy color.

Hi I don't post too often, I have a similar clock that I put above my fireplace. The wall isn't stone, it's plaster. I couldn't find one that wasn't during the holidays, but here it is.

deb - I love your clock! I've been looking at one like that for my kitchen. It does look nice with the smooth plaster. I'm still not sure the same would be true for our stone fireplace. By the way, you did a great job decorating your fireplace area.

I'm honestly not sure if I'd like the clock there or not. If you really love the clock, I'd say go ahead and purchase it. Surely there will be a place for it. Once you have it, i'd try setting it on the shelf, in place of the artwork. Leave it there for a few days and see if it competes too much with the stone. Maybe even post a picture of that for us to see =P

I wouldn't put a clock on that beautiful fireplace. Do you really need to know what time it is when you're in that room?

The only rooms where time matters to me are the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen ... when I'm cooking. There I find the clocks on the coffeemaker and toaster oven more than adequate.

gastroc - You're probably right that it would compete with the stone. What do you think of the other wall? I guess there really isn't a great spot in the room.

natal - We spend most of our time in the great room and kitchen, and we don't have a clock anywhere right now (only on the range and microwave - lol). Maybe I would be better off finding a clock for the kitchen. Sometimes when people are visiting, they seem to look around for a clock.

I think that clock is lovely, and I think the size is actually perfect for the space above the fireplace. The color in the center appears to pick up on the color in the chairs. I would buy it!

Your instincts are right about the other wall. It would "float" on that wall. I think that spot is begging for something large and vertical.

Elsa, glad you like the clock. I like its character, and the colors would go well with the room. If you've seen any of my previous posts, you'll know that I struggle with analysis paralysis. That's probably why I still have so much decorating to do! Maybe I should get a tall grandfather clock and stick it on that lonely wall - lol. :o)

Perhaps with a table underneath anchoring? Tough for me to say how it would all look though. Sorry I'm not much help heh heh.

gastroc - what a great inspiration image. That's nothing I would have thought of that on my own, but it really works. I agree that a table of some sort beneath would probably be needed. That wall has had me quite perplexed for a while.

I think the wall would be a better place than the stone - let the stone be the texture in that area.

Just curious, it appears that the two chairs by the fireplace face the back of a couch or loveseat? Hard to tell from just one view, but I would think about either having them face one another with the ottoman between them, or even angle them to face the fireplace, with their backs to the couch.

Or, it seems that you could pair them in front of that wall space, with a small table and lamp between them. In that case, having the clock on the wall behind them would create a nice visual balance.

Jan, I rather see a mantle clock on the mantle rather than a round clock on the stone. It's a classic look.

Love the clock though, find another place for it.

Les - Thanks for posting. Yes, the two chairs do face the back of a loveseat, which is not desireable, I know. That loveseat (and matching couch) will be replaced someday (sooner rather than later, I hope) with a sectional or another matching couch/lovesesat combo that have a lower back. Behind the new loveseat will be a long, narrow sofa table. These are the recommendations of the room designer who visited our house before we bought the chairs and ottoman. To the right of the room in the first photo is an opening to the kitchen/dining area.

You are so talented with furniture arrangements that I trust your eye. I will move the chairs in the different ways that you mentioned. Do you think if I have the chairs facing each other that it will look okay from the kitchen/dining to see a direct view to the back of the one chair? I'm not sure how much room there is on that wall, but I will also try moving them there, and also try facing them toward the fireplace. Living in Wisconsin, with these cold winters, it's great to have a seat near the fireplace during those months.

cliff and joann - I have thought about a mantel clock, and there are some nice ones available online. I don't think I have any other places to put the clock. It is quite large, so it is better suited for a large room, I think.

If I don't put the clock up there, does anyone have suggestions for mantel decor?

okay, I may be in the minority, but I like the idea of it over the fireplace. I have a similar clock in my bedroom which isn't very fung shui, but I love it.

I agree with Cali and Msrose - it would look greate over the fireplace. I don't see it taking anything away from the stone; in fact in the mockup above, it appears to enhance the stone, IMO.

calirose - oh, thanks for Photoshopping! It helps to visualize, and the scale looks right. I do like that clock. I'm still undecided - as usual! :o:

Laurie - I know I haven't always followed the "rules" either, and I'm sure your bedroom clock is perfect if it's perfect for you.

I love that clock so much that I would love to know where you found it! I've been looking for one for my library and that just might do the trick.

My vote is not to put it on the stone fireplace though. Is there someplace else in the room it could go?

Love the new inspiration pic with all the white. Makes me want to go through my cabinets and see what I have in white.

Jan, I think both ideas are wonderful! I love the clock with the stone, I think they are very complementary. The more I see the white arrangement though, the more I love how cheerful and bright it is. It definitely draws the eye. I also think it would beg for seasonal decorating, which will keep it fresh and interesting for you, without having to completely redesign it every time you want a change. I don't think you would regret either choice, but I think you will absolutely love the second one. Good luck!

If you place the clock up there -- consider re-painting those candlesticks to a rubbed black or dark brown -- and placing them on the hearth. Perhaps add a pair (matching) or a trio (different sizes) of vases along the mantel?

clemsonian, I too like the white or creamy items contrasting with the stone. I do like the mirror too, but I never seem to like them anywhere I put them for some reason. I think a mirror would have great light reflectivity since it faces opposite to a wall of windows.

Jan, I would buy the clock, it looks great (photoshop) on the fireplace. If you do not like it in person I would then use it on the wall and go with your new inspiration picture which is beautiful.Your room is so pretty either one or "both" will look great.

I like the clock very much...it's gorgeous and I think I could picture it near an entrance or exit. I know I'm probably crazy, but I keep having the thought that clocks always make me wonder if I'm late for something. :) I think I'd vote for the floor style that's not so "up front". Just my 2 cents.

I have clocks in everyone room of my house except the bathroom and dining room...I have no idea why, guess it just feels right to me. I bought a Grandfather clock for my family room and I love the sound of it.

I love the clock in your original post...lots of opinions on location from folks, but think it would look good over your fireplace.

pfmastin - You bring up a great point. Maybe a clock that size would overwhelm the space, demanding too much attention. My parents have clocks everywhere, and they would be absolutely lost without them because they ALWAYS want to know what time it is. Sometimes, I don't want to know what time it is, if you know what I mean! I just want to relax and enjoy the day, without time dictating my every move. In fact, now that I think about it, they're the ones who are always commenting, "I don't know how you can live without a clock on the wall somewhere!" Sometimes I wish they would loosen up that way. They're retired but still seem to live on a "schedule" somehow.

vampiressrn - Thanks for the confidence vote. It seems from the comments of many that the clock could work there alright. Since I found the new inspiration and have given thought to a floor clock, I'm now leaning in that direction. I just wish the floor clocks were less expensive! I love grandfather clocks, as you mentioned. They're so classic.

Okay, so how about something like this mirror made from a vintage ceiling tin? I really like the distressed look and the creamy color (a mirror - only loosely like the inspiration photo). The size is 23" x 23" overall. I think the actual mirror size is quite small on the inside. What do you think?

Oh, I forgot to add - Would the vintage mirror be too cottagey for the style of the room? The more I look at it, the more I like it. It's unique, not too new looking, and will go well with some other needful things I'm sure I can find - Hee! Hee!

Okay, so I think you've convinced me not to put a clock on the fireplace. I'll look for either a floor clock for the great room or a wall clock for the neighboring kitchen area.

I made an offer on the distressed ceiling tin mirror, and it was accepted. Can't wait to get it and use it as an inspiration for decorating the rest of the mantel.

I will post pictures when I get it all figured out and looking good!

Your room would be beautiful either way. I like the look of the clock over the fireplace, but I think I like your inspiration photo even better. I think your doing the right thing going in that direction. Can't wait to see updates!

I have one in the bathroom so I don't run late
I even have on the mantel in my kitchen (antique one that does not work) in the kitchen

But I don't care for a clock in the living room. Although, I have seen some Mora floor clocks that looks fabulous in the living room.

rushmom - The more I look at the inspiration photo, the better I like it too. I'm thinking I'll like that better in the long run. It's more versatile and changeable too. I will definitely post updated pictures when I figure it all out. Thanks for posting.

newdawn - I'm so glad I posted about this, because I have come to see now that I probably wouldn't care for the clock as much as I thought I would, and better to find that out BEFORE purchasing! I'll probably look for a clock to have in the kitchen instead. The floor clock (as you mentioned) is still an option, though, especially if there's room for one after we purchase the rest of our furniture for that room.
