Luvs, that was a good price for a thrift, even at a yard sale I'd have paid that. I strongly urge everyone who likes "stuff" to shop at yard sales as the prices can be really, really good there. It is more fun to go with someone, not sure if I'd go alone as often. DH and I always go together and also bring visiting relatives and guests if they are interested. It's a fun way to spend 2-3 hours on a Saturday morning. I often find people having a yard/garage sale, especially for the first time, are also nervous but will respond in a friendly way if you say good morning and make some pleasant comment (weather, how early it is, etc). Since I've held yard sales myself I know how much work it is to set things up nicely so if they have done that I compliment them. I also sometimes say, at some point, that DH and I go to a lot of YS's so have a lot of things. I also might say that I really shouldn't go to sales anymore but should have one of my own but find YS's fun. That way if I don't buy much they will hopefully understand. I also sometimes mention (with a laugh) our little rule of only buying what we can't live without. Then wish them good luck with their sale and on to the next. Of course there is sometimes the grouchy person who got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning and I just leave them alone! I must say I am less likely to buy from the grouch unless it's really something I can't live without. I rarely haggle anymore altho used to when we bot to resell but we bot a lot then. If things are priced too high I just walk away altho if it's something I really want I might ask if that's their best price or if they could go lower. Some people are not realistic in pricing so when everything is too high there is not much point in discussing it. If I am buying a lot of things I might round down and offer an even price. You know if it adds up to $22.50 I might just offer a $20 bill and ask if that's OK. Most people say sure as they are happy to have sold several things. If they hesitate I just pay the full price. The more I spend the better deal I often get. If you fill a box people are happier to give a bargain than if you are only buying one thing. Sometimes I've actually paid more than asking price when I know they have no clue about pricing especially older people who may not know the value of what they are selling. That can be as difficult as I don't want to offend but I just say it's worth $xxx to me and give that to them. I like the sales where people are selling their older parents or grandparents stuff and just want it gone. Then it's often fill a box and you can have if for $5. That was great when I bot glass for totems. However if they call it an "estate sale" I find prices are often high even on the junk. I know for sure I have too much stuff and will be giving away or selling some things eventually. I think I am being more selective because I have little storage space remaining but also my tastes have changed over time. I will still buy things if I love them tho, regardless.

Haven't told this story in a while because we were embarrassed. Friends daughter was getting married in a large city and the wedding was going to be at the hotel. We got to the hotel, checked in, had all the luggage brought up, tipped everyone, paid for the valet parking, we are starting up to the room. My friend called and ask why we were not at the hotel. I explained that we were at the hotel. She said well send you luggage on up and come down to meet me in the lobby. Down we go and look everywhere, my phone is ringing and she said I can't see you. Where are you, I describe where we are standing and she was saying are you sure you are in the main lobby. She finally asked , are you at the right hotel. Well guess what, wrong hotel, we are checked in, luggage in room. How very embarrassing to have to go to the desk and explain we are at the wrong hotel. They were so polite to us, they got our luggage back from the room, brought the car around and were even trying to return our tips. Of course we told them no. How on earth I got confused with the wrong hotel. I will never know. Of course, all of our friends knew by this time, that we had checked into the wrong hotel. From that day forward, when we have an event that involves a hotel I recheck the hotel information before booking. Guess they were trying to make us feel good at the first hotel, they were saying that was not the first time that happened and would not be the last.
