Replacing Garage Door Rollers???

I'm going to replace my garage door rollers to try and quiet it down a bit and reduce some of the vibration. I'm sure the rollers on there are the original 22 year old rollers.

Now, the question is what type of rollers are better? White nylon, black nylon, bearingless, with bearings, more bearings, less bearings?

They're inexpensive, so I want good quality ones, but I don't know what the difference is and whats better to quiet a door.

Also, I know it is advised to have the bottom ones replaced professionally. Couldn't I just take a pair of Vicegrips (maybe even two pairs would be advisable for something like this) and attach the cable to a part of the door frame while I change the bottom ones, or am I just better off not messing with those? How is it done professionally? Is there a special tool or something for that?

If you have a torsion spring (in the center, right above the door) don't even think about fiddling with the cable. You'll find those vice-grips becoming deadly missiles when that cable is taken off of the bracket.

If you have the coil springs on each side of the door track at the rear, you might give this a try with the door in the fully open position which relieves tension on the springs.

"I have check out web sites for Wayne Dalton and others and have noticed that the better doors are made of wood." Wood doors are generally higher priced because they are more expensive to make. That doesn't make them necessarily better. The higher cost keeps them out of the low-end market, so the door manufacturers tend to make only high-end wood doors. Quality doors can be also purchased in steel and fiberglass.

If you live in a cold climate, insulated doors make a big difference in winter and summer. I replaced an old sheet metal door with a double steel wall insulated one and it's the best money I ever spent. If you do replace all 3 please try to make sure they don't get scrapped. Donate them to the Habitat for Humanity Restore or a similar place.

If the job is planned out in advance, it should take about one day to remove the door and hardware, frame and install the new door and trim. Painting would take an appropriate amount of time to allow drying between coats. If drywalling is needed on the inside, that would also take some additional time. If you want custom windows or other accent to make up the difference in width between the garage door and the french doors, that would also take more time.

Is there currently living space above the garage nearest the door? I think it would make a huge difference to add some kind of contemporary dormer above that garage, that ties in the angles on the right side of the house. Even without immediately removing one of the garage doors, I think it would make a big difference in breaking up the long line of the roof that draws even more attention to the garage doors. Once the garage door becomes a wall, it will also provide more dimension. I think this will be a really interesting update to follow, I’m glad I stumbled on it! Please post pictures as you go along :)

on our doors the cables do not attach to the roller but to another plate on the door that the roller is also attach to. this means you simply remove the roller and it's mount, while leaving the cable mount in place. if this is the case, you do not need anything special to do it.

if you must remove the cables to replace the rollers, make sure that there is no tension on them. that spring is very strong, and can seriously injure you if the cable pops free.

generally, the more bearings you have the less noise. nylon would also be quieter, but they will not last as long as metal. you would get several years out of them, but not likely to get 20+ in my opinion.

No davidandkasie, my cables are attached to the bottom 'plate'. Good thought though. Maybe I'll just leave these two alone for now. Although I am thinking about making myself a couple of winding bars to support the spring while I change the bottom ones.

I've been seeing online in a few places that SilentGlide rollers made by Wayne Dalton are just about the quietest rollers on the market. Can anyone on here confirm this or have any personal experience with them or any others?

Take a quick look at the posts on Wayne Dalton. It's now on page 2. Would you really buy anything from this company?

Thats why I'm asking Don. I realize they have issues with their iDrives, but that doesn't mean all of their products perform this poorly.
If you wouldn't recommend these rollers Don, is there something better you'd suggest?

Here is a website that shows the different types plus has instructions on replacing rollers. I've never dealt with them but they do show pictures. I would go with the nylon rollers with 10 ball bearings.
