Spring is so late this year...how about in your area?

We had a cold winter and a very wet spring, so the daffodils and hyacinths are just now starting to bloom. That's about three weeks late, compared to most springs.

How about you...has the weather delayed your spring? Have you been able to get out and garden? What's blooming in your area?

It's been too wet to plant much of anything, but today is sunny and it's finally drying out...so I'm hoping to move some roses. Once I get that done, I can plant my veggie garden (I hope). I still need to get peas planted! :)

Yes it is late here too. We have had so much wind. Finally got the weeds sprayed off yesterday. Raining this morning. The spring bulbs are just now blooming. Usually they are finishing in April. I am happy to see some flowers again. Finally. Winter is my favorite time so I am not complaining about late spring. DUCKING

LOL! Don't worry, all the snow has finally melted, so no snowballs left to throw at you :)

I do like winter and snow, especially in December, January and even February...but not in April and May. This spring was so rainy, cold and even snowy that the daffodils are still blooming. The warm weather yesterday has gotten the lilacs leafing out a bit, but nothing much with the fruit trees so far.

It was really pretty yesterday, sunny and 70 degrees! Today is cool and rainy, but we're supposed to get more nice weather in the next few days...so maybe I'll have some time to at least get my peas planted. I'm so far behind this spring! I'll probably be planting beans right after the peas :)

Thank you, thank you, all! Jackie, unless someone says otherwise I'm just going to leave the dieback - for now. Other roses in my garden haven't responded that way - though this spring does seem to have more dieback than previous years. Even a local friend mentioned having it in her garden. Annabeth, I'm glad you agree. Capitaine used to be in too much shade, and he wasn't near as handsome. If I have any more failures, I know who the replacement will be. :)) Jeannie, I think you mean Lauren (the deep rose with purple and lavender). It is a pretty, little flower on the bush in the mauve color range - and hard for me to photograph because of the exploding colors - digitally, that is. Angela, mine isn't that tall yet but is BS-free here, too, and I can see why a near fall into Le Vesuve could give you a panic attack at the remembrance of it. I didn't know about thornless roses either. How could there be such a thing as a thornless rose? But I have had several without realizing it. I only realize after working on a bush for a while, reaching in and among the canes, and then notice I'm not scratched and bloody. My worst seems to be Maman Cochet, Climbing. Big prickles on the canes and small sharp ones under the leaves. I forgot myself and did some trimming on her a few weeks ago without pruning gloves. Golly, was I sorry! I couldn't touch her without getting stuck - painfully. Vettin, I really enjoy enabling. How convenient that you like being enabled! Glad you liked the campanions. Strawberry Hill, my soil is neutral even though I thought for a long time that it was alkaline. But even so, I had to ditch several roses that didn't like it. Patricia, when all those larkspur seedlings sprouted, I just thought they were weeds. Then as I was reaching to start pulling them, it dawned on me that I had one plant in that spot last spring that I grew from seeds. Rocket is the name, I think. I had plants sprout 50 feet away. Probably the seeds can't survive your winter temps, right? It was so nice to get the purple larkspur in the rose photos. For so long I've been drooling over others' roses-with-companion photos. It's a thrill to have my own. Ingrid, I thought of you when posting the Capitaine photos since he's an SDLM sport. Do you have him? He is so gorgeous. Your daylilies may be ones that bloom mid-season or later, or maybe they're the dormant kind that needed more winter chill to be strong enough to come back. I hope it's the former and not the latter. If you get more (and I hope you will - I almost enjoy them more than the roses), try to stick to the evergreens. Semi-evergreens work, too, but lose some of their foliage in the winter - though maybe not your winters. If you have any deciduous trees around your house I think you can let them be your guide, when most of them have started leafing out from their leaf buds its probably OK to plant. Most years I don't think you have to worry about frost after March first, but I do remember one year when it was bitterly cold in March. For myself my clay soil is the determining factor. I always want to do a final rototilling to try to kill any weeds or bermuda grass that is growing where I plan to plant, and with clay the amount of moisture in the soil is very important, too wet and you have a sticky mess that clumps right back down, too dry and the rototiller blades just bounce off it and I have to get my 66 pound electric jackhammer and 14 pound clay spade for a total of 80 pounds to lug around to dig my planting holes. I also live near the bottom of the north west side of a hill so my yard is usually three degrees colder than the official weather report as the cold air pools in my yard, plus sunrise comes later because of trees above blocking the light from the east.

Just as a "want to waste some time option", you might start with a real map (real paper... I know, completely unheard of nowadays) and a simple school pencil compass. Use the compass to make several concentric circles with your home location at the center. This would give you a rough idea of how far you could or even want to drive in an average day. By using the mile indicator located on the map somewhere, you could set up the circles at perhaps 100 to 500 mile distances from one another. Secondly, make a list (even a mental one) of the cities, burgs, and attractions between two or more circles. While not perfect, this will give you an idea of a couple of things. First, we will know that I/we don't mind driving XXX miles per day and secondly, what might be available to see and do within that preferred mileage suggestion. Thirdly, reduce that defined area by picking a compass direction that seems most advantageous to what you want to see and do on your (pick some number of days and insert here) trip. Realistically, the compass direction may have to be determined more on available roadways than on actual compass points but then, what's a good trip without a few side trips. If you have even more spare time, start to look up commercial tours, where they go, what they include as sightseeing attractions, etc. You don't have to actually take the tours but rather, use their advertising $ and experience to plan your own trip. The internet is wonderful for these uses since it goes everywhere with no cost other than what you're already paying per month for the service. Every state and most of the mid to larger sized cities also now have a load of information on locations, attractions, and so on... all neatly arranged dated and free to you. I've probably stated the above concepts poorly but maybe you can glean a bit of information that will make planning a bit easier.

.Thank you for sharing your best with me (everyone) so, so much. I miss all of you guys. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Just have not been able to join the forum. Well, this must have been the most prescient thing I have ever stated. Those structures we were supposed to build by end of May, I dont know if they will be built by next May. My husband does not want anyone coming over for the foreseeable future until there is more information about infectivity going down. well here are my roses from Regans and Edmunds soaking then after a few weeks they all leafed out but did not look like they were dying: finally got them all potted by mid May after soaking about three weeks At the time of planting they all *seemed* fine. Leafed out in a big way but healthy. Now I think there may be some issues. :( :( :( I am making a separate post. I got a few bare root roses from Plalatine which I planted in ground or in grow bags the next day and those are doing great. I just got my David Austin roses which are now soaking. I will pot them up this weekend. (Not supposed to say this but I think I did get too many roses. There wont be much room left to walk.)

Yes we had sun yesterday too and no wind. I sprayed the weeds in the yard. Used the BIG tank on the side by side. Loving it. not really fond of spraying. there is no other way for me. Too many weeds to do by hand. My hands will not take it. Or my back. This year I MUST make this yard more manageable.

While hanging laundry this morning I saw lots of pretty bulbs blooming. Will try to get a picture.

The floor guy was supposed to come Saturday to put vinyl in our living room. Well I called him this morning just to be sure he was still on schedule and he has decided to come tomorrow. So I have a council meeting at three tomorrow and have had to up my plans to move out of living room to today. I am about half way there. Company left at 5:30 this morning. YIKES. Guest room is crammed. So back to work for me. Coffee is gone. Busy day.

Spring was short here, and summer is early. It's been very hot- well above 'normal'. I've never figured out what they mean by normal or average temperatures- we are usually well over or under the so-called 'normal'. If you average the numbers out, it comes out about right, but it seems to rarely be at the actual number.

We've had NO RAIN for about two months now, very unusual. And we've had some nights in May which got down to 50 degrees, cooler than I can ever remember. The jasmine is still sparsely blooming, but it really put on a show for all of April and most of May. I cannot wait for it to cover that chain link fence across the back 100 feet of our lot. But for now, I'm deep watering plants on a rotating schedule. I hate to think of the water bill, even though we have an irrigation meter w/o the sewer treatment fees. But I'd rather pay the water costs than purchase new plants and put them in the ground. All the planting of this spring about KILLED me. However, I love the garden. More of my red patio stones (cement) are required to finish the Moon Walk, what I'm calling the garden path....because my little boy Maltese, Moon Pie, does not like to get his feet wet or on the grass. He loves the walk.

And we are in big time rain tonight. Been pouring for a few hours. We did have a couple of nice days. I planted the veggies or most of them Was going to plant the seeds then heard of the storm coming and did not really want them to sit and rot in the cold for several days. Supposed to be wet and wild here through the weekend.

Oh well. We had our chance to get rain, but the other side of town got it. And there was a tornado warning again, but it got cancelled later on. Our siren down at the corner went off though. So I guess I go back to watering the plants again. Bummer.

Rained again last night. Good for the little plants I have transplanted. Still waiting on putting the rest of the veggies out. Today we have partial sun but the wind is awful. A good day to spend inside. I did get a pretty full day in the yard yesterday. 52 degrees right now.

The Iris are finally Springing here.I uploaded some pictures to Flicker. With the cool and lots of rain they are huge and very vibrant this year.
