It's been one of those days

First of all, the ash plywood we ordered from the lumberyard came in. We paid premium price for domestic because they said the imported had a thin veneer. Well, this one has spots in it that have no veneer at all. And the lumberyard has a no returns policy.

Then dh came home after noon totally stressed because the big whigs at his company made some "simple" changes that will cause headaches for the next year and a lot of people will probably lose some of their best customers.

He needed a break so we took my little SUV to get the ash hardwood we need. It was rainy and cloudy and we didn't want to risk the wood getting wet in the pickup.

Then we got a call that his dad had a stroke at the nursing home and they haven't been able to rouse him. They waited all day before calling in the doctor. He'll be there in the morning.

Then we found that our septic tank is full. Thought it was the pump, but it's just full and needs to be emptied tomorrow. Meanwhile, dd had offered our house to two friends who are spending the weekend here to go to a concert. They were supposed to come tonight but I told her to call and tell them not to come until tomorrow.

What next?

The good news is that I put the last coat of finish on the cabinets this afternoon. At least I hope it's the last. I hope I like the way it looks tomorrow. Right now I'm not thrilled.

Wow! That's a rough patch for sure! You have my sympathy and wishes for a less-stressful tomorrow.

Sorry, but the lumber yard has to take back defective goods, or I don't pay for them. Returns are one thing; defective is quite another.

Thanks. Today has gotten better, and worse.

Because of the recent rain, septic companies are really busy and I couldn't get anyone to come until Monday. Then I got a call from one I had left a message and they said they could this afternoon. So I got that done.

Dr came to see fil and dh, bil & mil were there. He said he didn't think fil would come out of this and called in hospice.

Because of the septic stuff, I told dd to either tell her friends to make other arrangements or not come. And now with fil, dh couldn't handle a bunch of groupies coming and going at all hours.

I don't know how long fil has. Dr said there is only a slight chance he could wake up.

Sounds like a wonderful day. Hang gliding is something I've always wanted to try but never gotten to. I understand it is best left to the more athletic, not to mention coordinated people. So glad you enjoyed it.

Kate, it all depends on the coleus variety. That front bed garden was almost all in containers, and until after mid-summer, they had been in full sun out back, all day long. Then when it got unbearably hot, I moved them into the shadier bed. Most of them will probably work with morning sun and afternoon shade, but some really LOVE all day sun. It is really helpful to know which ones you have, as you can look on the Rosy Dawn website and find out how tall they get, and whether they like shade, sun, or half and half. Some will not take sun at all, and will shrivel and burn, and look lousy. Betsy, thank you for the compliment. I really had fun with them last year, and today, I planted another bed out back with them. But the ones I put out are mostly NOIDS I got locally, so I'm only guessing as to what they will like. I think I recognize Defiance which can take a LOT of sun, and maybe Peter Wonder, which can take a fair amount, too. Others I'm just going to have to wait and see how they do where I just put them. Darth Vader prefers shade, or filtered sun. It's a great plant, and looks really good with Lord Voldemort. Lots of black and green on those two. Saturn loves sun, but I don't know for sure about Saturn's Rings. However, if it is a sport of Saturn, I would guess it wants sun, too. Again, Darth Vader doesn't do so well in sun, so be careful if you pair those two. Fiesta and Fire Dragon are great sun lovers, too. I had them both last year and they got huge. Marcia

Susie, I'm so sorry you're having a bad day. I wish I had some wise advice to give you, but all I can tell you is I completely understand when you say 20 years makes a difference. Although I've been reading this forum for several years, we have yet to start our reno so I don't know a solution to your 1 inch flooring dilemma--cutting down the toe kick by an inch is the only thing that comes to mind. Take the day off, and treat yourself to a little "me" time. I hope things look better tomorrow. I'm sorry for the loss of your nephew. That kind of loss you really never get over, and some days it can hurt like it just happened yesterday. Although it hurts, allow yourself to remember all the wonderful times you had with your nephew. He was blessed to have such a loving and devoted aunt, just as your life was blessed by him. Take care of yourself. Wishing you a good night's sleep tonight.

N-day for Dustin and already its off to bad start

Thanks for the support! Dustin's eyes are dilating this morning so I'm relieved about that. He's eating both wet and dry food and using his litter box (though he was clawing at my closet door to get in before he did and I think he wanted to use it instead, lol). He's quieter now, not making his squeaky noises as much, is sharpening his claws on his new post (and the mattress but I'll let him get away with that for a couple of days) and seems more like himself. Except for the billing issue, which they were kind enough to help me out with, I've been very happy with the service there. Their treatment of Dustin and the attitudes seem great. I feel comfortable with them and will probably continue to go there. It was a stressful day but I felt comfortable leaving him in their care and seeing how they interact with him it seems that they have a genuine love of animals. My mother's vet and office staff are a bit more professional, don't talk as much to the animals (vet barely spoke to me) so I'll likely go back. I'm not quite sure the signs of a good vet/clinic but I think the way they interact with the pets is a sign of how he'll be treated when I'm not around and I watch how the vet handles Dustin and how she talks to him and this, I think, helps to calm Dustin and establish a connection with him. I plan to start putting money aside for rainy days/unexpected vet bills but my mother was with me when Dustin and I found each other and said she would help if any emergency vet trips were needed (she loves animals too) so even in my financial situation I know that I'll have some help caring for him if he ever got sick. Thanks again for the tips and reassurances that Dustin's recovering normally. Its one thing to read about how he might react in a general pamphlet they send you home with but each pet will respond differently and its great that people can share their experiences to help ease the minds of others. I'm very happy to have found this site!

I think we should go out and buy one of those lottery tickets. Just got a call from dh and fil is waking up. The hospice nurse was checking his vitals and moving him around and he opened his eyes. She started jostling him and calling his name and he answered. Then said he was thirsty. Dh asked him if he wanted his dentures and he opened his mouth. So his mind is working. The nurses are in shock. I think mil is in shock too.

I do too. I asked dh what mil's reaction was and he said he thought she was a little let down. She had steeled herself for the worst and his waking up caught her by surprise. I know the whole thing has taken a toll on her too. She has said before that she hates to see him like this and that it is really not a life that he has now, just an existence. He is fairly miserable at the nursing home and I wish there was another option.
