Number of chandeliers in great room?

I have a split level with the very high ceilings over the entry kind of making it one large area that happens to have a set of stairs in it. Currently we have a chandelier over the entry and a ceiling fan in the living room but I would like to replace the fan with a chandelier. So... two chandeliers in that room would be okay? Identical ones or should one be smaller than the other? Which one?

I can't get it all into one pic but here are a few so you get the idea. Some pics are older than others but you get the basic layout of the room.

Yo can use two, although they should at least coordinate with each other. If it were up to me, though, I'd replace the small fan & light with a larger one without lights on it and light the room with cozy reading lamps, etc. instead. I just am a person who doesn't feel comfy in rooms that use overhead lighting . . . except in kitchens, that is. JMHO, though. BTW, wonderful sofas you have there! They look very comfy, too.

No overhead light? I admit I know ziltch about decorating or home design and I am only just beginning but I have never heard of that. What would I put there? Nothing at all? I want to be rid of the fan completely, we don't use it and it only collects dust.

we are going to go with a ceiling fan for our great room. i think the air circulation will help a lot as our great room is right next to the kitchen. in winter, you can reverse the blade direction to push warm air down. for a high ceiling, i think it might be useful. as a compromise though, have you considered the fandeliers? they are ceiling fans that look like chandeliers. they are a little pricey, (but then, so are chandeliers) and have limited style selection, so we are opting to just do a ceiling fan. here are a few pics of fandeliers

We centered the table on the wall where the buffet is. And would like to center it in the dining area as well. I'm a little perplexed tho, cause then the chandelier wouldn't line up with the living area and center kitchen cabinet light. Should I be looking into different kitchen lights? My husband is going to freak cause we only moved in the house in May and already I would be "remodeling" :-)

The house we just moved out of after 20 years had 2 ceiling fans in the cathedral ceiling. They ran 24 hours a day for those 20 years, we even flipped the switch to change the direction summer and winter. House was heated with forced air, well insulated but had no a/c. We found the house more comfortable with them running than not. The new house plan is to have a ceiling fan in the living room and all bedrooms. We like them. We like the windows open when we can and it's nice to have the fans on low. I'm saving the chandelier for the dining table.

I like the idea of multiple cascading pendants and I think the black canopy is a good idea. Skip the bling on the first chandelier. I think you'll get tired of it quickly. Your new home looks beautiful! Enjoy it!

I would take the entry chandelier and move it to where the fan is, then put a light in the entry that's designed for an entry. Something that doesn't look like a chandelier.

I second what kgsd said. Find an entry chandelier in the same metal as the one you have so they coordinate and move the other to the living room. Since the lights are facing up they won't bother you when you're on the couch.

You can really put any chandelier in the foyer as long as they coordinate.

You could try something similar to the link to match the one you have.
If you want to change both, I would put a black iron chandelier in the LR and then a smaller one with crystals in the foyer but that might not be your style. That's just my personal taste.
