Child's Beach outfit in Gallery

Madison wanted a beach outfit for their trip next week. I had made her a dress out of this fabric 3 years ago. I bought the border print on ebay and I still had the all over print. Anyhow she wanted a skirt out of the border print and a top out of the other. I did the top like the pillow case dresses. At least she can mix and match or wear together. She'll probably get more wear out of the top but I did elastic in the waist of the skirt so it should grow with her some.

I swear that girl has a designer's soul. This is so cute and how lucky you were to get the matching fabric ...either way I am sure she will be thrilled....and to get a couple years wear from one outfit is just a bonus. I give you a high five for this outfit. Too cute for words, Susie

She does have a designer's soul! Mimics every move we make. Has to have paper & pen right by. Her paper has letters & numbers like mine. Where I have B,W,H,SL,PL,SL & etc, she just puts whatever comes to mind.

She also wanted a one piece bathing suit. We looked every where for a pattern. She brought me bottoms to a 2 pc & we stretched it out & pinned it to the ironing board & made our bottom pattern. We pinned that to her underwear with excess paper taped to the top of the bottom pattern. We taped tissue paper to her tummy & back & shoulders & got a magic marker & marked where she wanted her neck line & how low she wanted the scoop in the back & where she wanted the arm holes. I am the marker. She is giving the instructions. Funny thing was the magic marker bled thru on her! A moment of pure panic! She said "Is this going to be like a tattoo & be on me forever"? Alcohol removed it in a heart beat.

First run of the suit is wearable but since our fabric stretches & our pattern didn't allow for that, it is ok in the width but could be a little shorter in the toroso area.
Probably perfect next year.

Her "Softouch" scissors were a hit & just perfect for her little left hand. She kinda moved them around getting the feel of them & just smiled real big. She cut some on 2 layers of scraps. Now we just need to get a left handed person to teach her hand stitching.

Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! When, i started scrapbooking I realized there were very few pictures of me. And those we had, I was usually trying to hide behind something. Then I ran across some photos of my beloved Grandmotherand it dawned on me-she tried to avoid photos too. But everyone loved her despite how she looked or what she wore. It didnt matter to anyone! So from that day forwardI decided to embrace me. Those wwho know me know my quirks and now I live in acceptance of my physical appearance and proudly pose for all pictures. I try to steer clear of costumes (like the woman in white above, and i try to be appropriate for the occasion, but I dont criticize myself for my choices and i dont avoid the mirror or camera. In 20 years my family and friends wont look at that picture and say `what was she thinking?` or `Look at those jowls`, they`ll say She looks so happy!

Thanks for the support, ready2moves! tallley sue nyc, I think that's what I am finding, that I have achieved a change in mental perspective over the past couple of years because I finally really stepped out of my usual box and found a few things that have all of the right features (fit, material, color, style, price).. It took me a year or 2 to "collect" a number of items that go together and are different enough from my older clothes so that the "new look" becomes evident. (though, ha ha, just about the time I have tiptoed into new territory, the diabolical fashionista plot to always keep things changing will have dictated a new look). Oh, well! Last night I did a closet overhaul and managed to give up quite a few items--even things that had stuck to me like cockleburrs, good suits and skirts and stuff, mostly not worn in years though. It takes a block of time because what is helpful for me is to try on new and old stuff and go, "This, or that?". When I do that, I can see heck, I'm not gonna wear THAT if I can have THIS. Plus, doh, some stuff just didn't fit anymore no matter what fantasies I had or have. There is a lesson here that is part of the above shopping quote. I need to remember not to accumulate too many of what are essentially duplicate items or styles, since I really can get by with fewer items in any given "type" of clothing (work, church, casual, etc). (Bang head, rinse, repeat) I tend to buy say, a work top in over a dozen colors when I only really need 3 or 4. Then, when the styles (or my figure) shifts a bit, as it always will do, I've got too much space and effort, let alone $$, invested, and I think that makes it harder to shift gears. So, as part of organizing my space, and not expanding into someone else's closet, and using less time to figure out what to wear, I hope to try to "save room" for, not just new clothes that are more of the same, but experimenting with things. Now that really requires a change in mental attitude! Because, if I wear my relatively new stuff that I've finally got together, I DON'T NEED ANY MORE CLOTHES right now (welllllll.. hardly any!) I need to have fun where I am and realize I'll want to try something else down the road. I'm pretty sure being in middle age has a lot to do with this! Not exactly mid-life crisis ( I think I had that already) , but heck, when you're younger, you can basically wear anything, and I was never much attuned to fashion per se. Whereas now, a tweak here or there in length or neckline or something seems to make more difference between looking kinda dowdy vs. not. So, I hadn't thought about it before as "organizing the wardrobe for middle-age issues", but there you have it. A leaner wardrobe, but changing more, actually works better for me now than when I was younger.

OMG, that is another darling one! :) Yep, you do remind me of what I did with Cin. I don't have any kids either and she was great fun to sew for. Now she's a pre-teen and is more into the surfer-wear, not the cutesy stuff I used to sew for her (when she looked like my little Barbie doll). BTW: Cin was my friend's little girl and I'd sew outfits for her including matching bags/purses and hair adornments for each outfit and I'd send them to her in the mailÂthis was when she was 5-years old before she went to Kindergarten (since kids love to get mail I'd mail them to her instead of taking them over). :) Her mom made me a 'photo book.'

The outfit is adorable. I love the fabric, and she's one lucky girl.

I come from a family with lots of lefties, though I'm not one.

To teach her hand sewing, set her in front of you, as if both of you are looking in a mirror, and have her follow what you do. It works. It's how I taught one of my strong lefty cousins to knit.
Wish I had a girl to sew for, though I wouldn't take anything for my grandson, and make shirts, etc. BUT, oh, to sew girl things would be such a treat.

We'll have to try that. My DH a lefty taught her to tie her shoes. Both of her parents are right handed and it dawned on us one day that Warren could show her. I guess I'll have to teach him to sew so he can teach her, LOL.

That is just too cute! I love it!! I used to sew clothes for my two DD's when they were young (now both in their 30's) and neither one ever got interested in sewing....just the end results. They are both "clothes horses" now and my oldest said she is sorry she can't sew. Maybe its not too late!

Madison is a very lucky youngest and I bet the best dressed.

It's not too late to teach your "girls" to sew! A co-worker of mine was 41 when she decided she wanted to learn. She does pretty good, but is still very unsure of herself. She's been sewing a little over a year now.
